Well, mine is still going strong after about 4 years, and also, me, a 51 year "outoppie" can set it up without even looking at the manual, the younger technologically advantaged should be able to do it as well!

I wanted to use my Garmin immediately though. So, I took some aluminium foil and short circuited the two battery contacts (in the center and at the rim of the battery compartment). Voila! It came up with this strange message again but then only after a second it continued and asked me for my language. Admittedly, I repeated this procedure twice. But in principle short-circuiting the voltage supply is supposed to be the ultimate brute-force reset of any device. All the other resets seem not to work when this problem arises after a battery replacement! "

There is a difference between the Benzine that you get commercially in the shops, and Benzene, which is the carcinogen you are referring to. Benzine is just an industrial solvent readily available in your local hardware store.

Oh my word, but I had a terrible race! And not because of the race organisers, which as usual, did a stellar job! This was my first long distance after the injury form the fall of the ladder as per this post: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/134593-off-from-cycling-for-a-while/?do=findComment&comment=2168624 My injured calf (left one), began cramping like mad just after we turned back to the finish at Nigel. That last 25 - 30kms was terrible and seemed to never end. I finished the race in 03:44, where my usual finish time is ±03:15. But, I finished without stopping even once! And, I suppose it also is the age catching up with me, seeing today is my 51st birthday.

I share your sentiment! From Sasolburg to Cyclelab is almost exactly 100km, as well as a toll gate in between. I mailed the organisers to try and arrange for a number pick-up early that morning, but they did net even bother to reply to my e-mail. A quick "Sorry, but that is not possible." would have sufficed, but nada! Earlier this year I took part in the Carnical City race with the same dilemma. I e-mailed them, and almost immediately I was answered. They gave me EXACT details how about where I can collect my number on the morning of the race, as well as a cellphone number to call should I have any other problems. Why cannot ASG Events do the same? Or is it about the money, and not the sport of cycling? I think that I should stick to races at Stonehaven in Vanderbijlpark.

Does anyone have any information on the photographers for the Crater Cruise? As far as I can remember from on the route it was "Photo Marx", but their website is dead. Or am I mistaken about the name? Edit: My mistake, I used a .com instead of a .co.za. My pics are up!

I also wanted to find out about this and I e-mailed the event organisers 3 times without a reply. I am almost exactly 100km away from the nearest number collection point, which means 200km both ways plus the Kroonvaal toll gate in between as well. I would love to support races from outside the Vaal Triangle area, but the number collection is a huge drawback. It just seems unfair to take a day's leave and travel such a long distance just to pick up a number! the organisers could possibly also consider making a courier option available. I would also pay a levy of some sort if I can collect the number on the morning of the event.

AFIK they do not replace the batteries, but offer you a new one at a substantially reduced price. My Garmin Edge 305's battery packed up some time ago, and I was offered the Edge 705 bundle for ±R2000 when the retail price for the bundle with the HR and cadence was around R5500. My Edge was a few years old then and I took them up on their offer. Otherwise you can replace it yourself. there are quite a few battery replacements options available on the internet, just Google it. With shipping included you should be able to get it for about R500.
