  1. What I do with any map update that's available for any of my Garmin devices, is to first to the install to the local hardrive of the PC, and only then install it to the device itself using either Garmin's Basecamp or MapInstall. MapInstall works easier for me. When you are in Garmin Express and at the page for the map you wish to update and install, expand the "Installation Options". When asked "Select where you would like to install the files." choose the "Computer Only" option. After the map was successfully downloaded and installed on your PC, you can install it to your device, but also have the option to browse and explore the map on your computer at your leisure.
  2. I purchased mine from Makro the day the deal was launched in October last year. I got it to replace my 7 year old Cannondale that I used for commuting to work and back. It's now done about 3000km and I have not had one single issue with it. Admittedly it's not subjected to any rough riding, but only for commuting. Still original tyres and brake pads. I'm still very happy with my purchase.
  3. Not too bad for us that finished in the first bunches. It may have been a bit more hectic for the later groups. My son and I found the trucks into which we had to load the bicycles fairly easy, and just a couple of meters further up a line of about 6-7 busses were waiting for the cyclists. The guys doing the bike transport were NightwinG couriers that also does bike transport from the main centres down to the "Argus". We waited for about 10-15 minutes in the bus for it to fill up and we left back to Melrose Arch. Just after we debussed at MA, the truck with the bicycles arrived. When you handed your bike in at first, you were given a wrist band with a number on it, and another one was tied onto the bike. When you went to collect your bike, they matched the number on your wrist band to that of the bike before handing it back to you.
  4. Scotty, I was one of those that moved to the shorter distance. One of the biggest reasons to do that it becomes a VERY long day when you drive all the way from Sasolburg and then back again. But I am quite happy with my ride. Rider 171 of 2211, 137 of 1327 for gender, 36 of 141 group position and 16 of 93 for my age group.
  5. I did my first 94.7 4 months before I turned 40 (I am almost 57 now.), and it was my first race longer than 50km. Also my second road race. I realised I was turning into the proverbial couch potato and entered on a whim and a dare on the last day of entries. This gave me about 1 1/2 months to train, and I started in the open group YY! The second last group to depart, I think the start time was 10:10. I completed the race in just over 4 hours, and since then I was hooked...…... I missed it once because of a knee operation. and one other time, but I cannot remember why that happened. Go out, have fun! Enjoy the experience. I am sure it won't make any difference whether you're 15382nd or 23749th. If you completed without any injury or damage to your bicycle, it then will be a good day out cycling. Good luck!
  6. It did not take seven months, I was only recently made aware of the issue when I took my bike in to my LBS for a service.
  7. Getting a bit personal, aren't we? Yes, I am on the Hub mostly late in the evenings. I work during the day, and early evenings is family time.
  8. I took heaps of old cycling kit to my LBS that's also involved in youth development. They distribute it to the needy.
  9. Thanks for all the responses, appreciated. Luckily it wasn't a lot of money (<R1000), so I am not fretting too much over this. We also had a chat at work during out lunch break, and there sort of was consensus that it's something to try and avoid, making purchases when you're away from home. Most of my colleagues had stories to share of stuff that's broken down, had defects, or were plain just poor quality that would have been a big schlep to try to return to the place where it was purchased. If it at a major retailer eg. Makro, PnP, Game etc, then it's a different ball game because with them you can return items irrespective of where it was bought. Anyway, I've moved on. Lessons learnt..... (hopefully! )
  10. How does the Hubbers feel about this? I think I have paid school fees in doing this. I purchased cycling related items at a major retailer at last year's CTCT expo, having flown down from Johannesburg to CT. As most cyclists do, you wander around at the expo and are tempted by all the items on "special", which I succumbed to. Now I am experiencing defects in said purchase, made contact with the dealer, but they now want me to courier the items to the CT greater area to their store for assessment, and I must also include the proof of purchase. The item purchased probably is considered as a consumable, so I did not even think about keeping a receipt. I know that probably was a mistake on my part, but it wasn't a huge amount. If it was a high value item such as eg. a cycling GPS, wheels or cycling shoes, I definitely would have kept the receipt. The lesson I have taken from this is to try and avoid purchases at an expo if the retailer is far away from my place of residence. I am not going to elaborate on what I purchased, and I am neither going to say from which retailer I made this purchase. Doing this will serve no purpose. I probably made a mistake of not keeping my receipts, and I would think the dealer is within his rights to be afforded the opportunity to assess it and to ask for a proof of purchase. I am just interested in the general opinion on making purchases when you are far away from the retailer.
  11. I do not know if this will help you, but here is a GPX file created from my Strava data for last year's road race. Edit: Sorry, the file is too big to attach. It's about 5.3 MB, and I am only allowed a file of 2 MB max. I can e-mail it if you cannot find it elsewhere.
  12. However, hosting a short course in addition to the traditional 109km route is proving extremely complex. The team at Cape Town Cycle Tour, together with key stakeholders including the City of Cape Town, has invested considerable time and effort in planning for two world-class events within the City and surrounds. Safety, experience and quality of the event cannot be compromised, and disruption and inconvenience to the residents of the City of Cape Town must be minimised. This process can’t be rushed and with the entry date upon us, the decision has been taken to postpone the short route option until 2021 to allow for further planning and judicious preparation. “We know that there will be some disappointment around this decision – we’re disappointed too,” says Bellairs. “But as always, the safety of participants comes first. We hope to have good news next year regarding the short course for 2021. All stakesholders will continue working to make this possible.” https://www.bikehub.co.za/features/_/news/road/sa-road-cycling/cape-town-cycle-tour-entries-open-e-bikes-welcome-short-route-clarification-r7979

  14. I do not have a Garmin Edge 510, but this is what I would do. First give the device a "Master reset" by doing this: Perform a master reset: Power device off Press and hold Lap and Start/Stop Power device on while still holding both buttons Continue holding buttons when Garmin "splash" screen appears Release buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears If you do not have it, download and install Garmin WebUpdater: http://gawisp.com/perry/garmin_uilities/WebUpdater_WindowsXPSP3andnewer__257.exe Install it first before plugging your device in onto the PC. After it's been installed, plug your Edge 510 in and run the program after Windows recognised the device. Follow the prompts from WebUpdater. This should sort your Edge 510 out. If this didn't help, try this. Download the device's software from here: http://gawisp.com/perry/edge/Edge510_320.gcd Give the device a master reset again and plug the device in onto the PC. Copy the *.GCD file to the Garmin's root directory. Switch the Garmin on and it should prompt you to update the firmware/software. Once completed, either run WebUpdater or Garmin Express (http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/B/GarminExpressInstaller.exe) and see if it offers any additional updates. Good luck!
  15. Anyone still remember these? I was clearing out some drawers and found them lurking at the back.
  16. My wife and I will be flying down to Cape Town the first week of June to celebrate our 32nd wedding aniversary. Is that too late to pop in for this? We'll be staying in the "City Bowl", and will be flying back on Saturday the 8th of June.

  18. My wallet and credit card just had a massive sigh of relief! I unfortunately cannot go down for the CTCT this year, and last year did a bit of damage to my budget there.
  19. This race is one of my top three races apart from the big two, being the 947 and the CTCT. My top three are the Macsteel Carnival City, Dischem Ride for Sight and Fast One. Due to various circumstances I have had to skip the Macsteel Carnival City and RFS for two years in a row now, which saddens me. The CTCT is also not on this year.
  20. Because I am not going down for the CTCT this year, I have entered for the 49km distance. Starting in AS at 08:00. But I just LOVE this race! Always a good vibe, well organised. Just that last ±5km slight incline towards the finish that always catches me out.
  21. I actually would like that. I just got an extremely sweet deal on a Edge 130 from a fellow hubber, and so far I am very satisfied with it. I am not very active on WhatsApp, and not a member of any groups. I would not mind getting the odd and infrequent notification on my Garmin.
