  1. I would assume that getting a replacement battery locally would be a mission. For example the battery replacement kit mentioned in the previous post, the company does not ship to South Africa. Also, (I may be wrong about this), I think that shipping companies are not allowed to send batteries by airfreight anymore. I would rather browse the classifieds section, there was a number of Edge 500s up for sale at very reasonable prices. I purchased mine here of the Hub's classified section a number of years ago, and it's still going strong with really good battery life. Another option would be to see if you cannot hack a battery intended for a cell-phone, and with a bit of soldering you may just come right.
  2. Also done mine this morning, not a speed freak, just a casual Sunday morning cycling. Relive 'My “Argus” 109 for 109 charity cycling.' I definitely would have loved to do it in Cape Town, instead of the dreary Free State at ±1500 meter above sea level.
  3. I once was in a cycle shop when this guy walked in and asked if they can quickly look at the indexing of his road bike, a Gee-Haa. I was curious about this bike, thinking it's maybe a Chinese frame or something. He brought it in, and I then saw it was a Giant.......
  4. I used their contact form on the website. https://support.garmin.com/en-ZA/?contactOverride=true&productID=552962&tab=topicsI then filled in the contact form.
  5. I have a Garmin Forerunner 35 that's in daily use. Last week the band holder (the small thingy on the strap that keeps it in place) broke. I contacted Garmin SA via their website to find out what a replacement would cost. I have had it for a while and I am pretty sure any warranty has lapsed. Later that day I received an e-mail from their customer support requesting my address, they're sending me a complete new strap, not just the band keeper, without any cost to me. I felt that this gesture deserves a mention here, they were under no obligation to do this, and I was more than willing to pay for any replacements necessary. I have since received this replacement that was sent out by courier to me. Well done Garmin, I will continue supporting them. I have been a happy Garmin owner for many years now.
  6. According to Racetec's website, it belongs to Martin Peter Cocks. http://results.racetec.co.za/results_by_person.aspx?PID=113499 https://www.jetlineactionphoto.com/directview.php?e=10156&se=4288&r=60388
  7. I would suggest you make contact with the local ditributors: https://www.facebook.com/RFA-Distributors-PTY-LTD-461082300698465/
  8. I see the long awaited Garmin Edge 130 Plus has finally been released. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/698436 I love my 130 due to the small form factor.
  9. I have to bow my head in shame and confess i just could bot get myself to go out and cycle this morning. It was just too cold, about 5 degrees. The predicted temperature for a bit later did not look much better. It was 9 degrees at 09:00. In my defence, I just do not have proper cycling kit to cater for the colder weather. At best I can put on arm warmers and a t-shirt underneath my cycling top. But I only have "normal" open finger gloves. If only this damn virus wasn't so very contagious after 09:00, I could have gone out a bit later.........
  10. I wasn't in either of those, just a normal citizen. I started cycling to work as soon as I started working at Sasol in 1983.
  11. I went out for my first ride after level 4 kicked in. Did not go too far, only 27.5km. It took some time to get used to riding with a buff covering my mouth and nose, so I did not want to overdo it the first time. I must confess, when I did the stretch from Sasolburg out on the R59, I did pull it down to breathe easier seeing I was all alone, no-one else that I could get into contact with.
  12. I was looking for something, and discovered this gem. I think some of the younger generation would not know what this is.....
  13. If only practical was as easy as theoretical...… Theoretical you could cycle 5km away from your house, then do a circle still adhering to the 5km radius and then once you get to the start of the circle you cycle back home. By then you would have done a nice 41.42km ride. 2πr = 2π(5) = 6.28318 * 5 = 31.4159. Plus the 5km out and back is an added 10 km giving you 41.42km
  14. I'm on almost the same predicament and I am also keen on getting some answers regarding this.
  15. Seeing I am new to all these training apps, how would I be able to use something like Swift for example on my non-Bluetooth or Ant+ enabled stationary trainer? I had a look at their website, but I only see stuff like the Wahoo Kickr.
  16. Thanks! I put the Campagnolo groupset on it just before I made this bike available for my son to use. I also put on a Campag wheelset. Everything that was replaced I passed on to someone that builds up bikes for youth development.
  17. I hear you, but I am a 57 year outoppie, and I just want to try and keep busy during these difficult times. I definitely to not have podium finishes in mind...…
  18. I looked at that option, but they are asking $19.95 per month(more than R370/m) for it, or $189 per year (R3520), which is WAY too much for me at the moment. I'll then rather just chug along at my own pace for this period.
  19. Being forced to work from home and not being able to do my daily commute to work and back and a weekend longer ride, I dug out my 10+ years old RAVX indoor trainer. Cleaned it up and mounted my old Raleigh RC4500 on it. Since I started using it, I realised that I have a lot to learn to make the best of what I have. What I have learned so far is: Keep a towel handy, you sweat a LOT! I am using a smallish one to wipe my head, neck and face.A stationary trainer chows your tyre! I took the tyre off and put an older one on that still has enough tread on it, but was beginning to show small cracks on the sidewall. It should be fine for my purpose. I know a trainer specific tyre should be used, but that isn't an option at the moment.Clean the "roller" after each ride. The roller becomes sticky from the tyre's rubber that wears off while riding, but very unevenly. This causes the wheel to slip while riding which can become quite annoying.I am still undecided about listening to music while riding. Those that does it, isn't the earphones a nuisance? I moved the IDT outside, a bit of a draft outside and listening to the birds makes it a more pleasant experience than riding inside.Any other tips and suggestions from those in a similar position would be appreciated.
  20. I really wish I had one of these new smart trainers for this lock-down period. I managed to get hold of an older RAVX trainer, similar to this one, just an older version of it: https://ravx.com/product/x-catcher-copy/ I set it up on my old Raleigh RC4500 that my son now uses to cycle and tried it out yesterday. OMG! I was knackered, and could only manage about 22 minutes on it! My cadence was much higher than usually, where when I am out on the road it's about 65-70, but on the trainer it was 85. My heart rate went up from my usual of 160 to 172 on the trainer. This morning my upper legs muscles are so sore, I'll skip one day and have another go at it tomorrow morning. Although it was much more intense, I think I would have had a more enjoyable experience if I had the luxury of a virtual ride. Maybe something to consider getting sometime in the future. Here is a pic of my current setup.
  21. Just yesterday I digged up my old Rav-X indoor trainer to set up a bike to cater for this extended shut-down. I installed a spare unused GSC-10 cadence-speed sonsor on it, and took two random sensor magnets from my drawer. My trusty old Garmin Edge 500 paired with the sensor immediately. The cadence worked first time, but I had to fine tune the spoke magnet's pick-up arm position to get it to read the stationary speed. I can therefore set your mind at ease that you can use any magnet you have available, it will definitely work.
  22. I once read somewhere that you sometimes can "reboot" the HR monitor by butting in the battery the wrong way round for a couple of seconds. That information came from a person that worked on the design of the HR monitor, and he also gave an explanation why it can possibly fix errors on the device. If it's already not working, and out of warranty, it's probaly worh a shot.
  23. I am soooooo jealous of those fortunate to take part. I have not been able to go down for two years in a row now. At about R10k for a couple of days it's an expensive outing. But I'll most probably be going down next year. My bucket list is to complete 21 rides (completed 12 already), but I started cycling fairly late in life, when I turned 40 and realised I was becomming a couch potato. Time unfortunately isn't my friends, I'm turning 57 next week. I still have 9 rides to do before achieving my goal, but that probably will take me at least 15 years to achieve. Anyways, good luck to all taking part, for those going for a PB, go for it! For those (like me that ride for the views, socializing, just a nice day out cycling), I also hope you all have fun and that the weather gods plays along nicely.
  24. Not as impressive as most of the others, but still better than someone staying on the couch at home...…..
