  1. I have a MASSIVE saddle bag on my road bike, and would not have it otherwise. It has space for three CO2 cannisters, three tubes, three tyre levers, master links for 9, 10 and 11 speed chains, a chain breaker, different sizes of cable ties and short pieces of 9, 10 and 11 speed chains. The last items I keep mostly to help out those that feel it isn't cool to carry a saddle bag, and have encountered problems with their chains. I have helped out numerous felllow cyclists in getting them back into the race. I almost stopped hellping out other cyclists after encountering THE rudest youngster at the Telkom Satellite Challenge a couple of years back.whose chain broke, and I stopped to help him by using one of my master links. He kept on rushing me on, telling me that he was in a hurry to get back to his bunch. After I helped him, he just sped of without any word of thanks.
  2. That unit cannot be more than 2-3 years old and needs a battery replacement? That sucks! My Garmin Edge 705 is now 10 years old, and I stil get 10+ hours of battery life out of it. I am also still on my original H/R monitor and GSC10 Speed/Cadence sensor.
  3. My take on this is as follows: TopoActive Africa v3.img - It's a topographic data map, could be usefull if you do MTB'ing. Gmapprom.img - That is your main road map installed on your GPS, should be usefull if you do road cycling. Used to calculate routes on roads. D601700A.img - Absolutely no idea what this one is used for. Gmapgc.img - Map for Geocode data, used to look up POIs. Gmapdem.img - Elevation data map, could be usefull for both road and MTB. Gmapbmap.img - Default base map, no real usefull data on it normally. Gmaptz.img - Timezone map, only usefull if you travel between countries with different time zones.
  4. I hope I will be there again too, but in the same circumstance as last year, which was assisting my eldest son which did the camerawork for the photo-finish for the race commisaire at the finish line. It was quite interesting to be there at the finish line with a bit of a different view of a cycle race.
  5. My guess would be to visit their official website? https://www.capetowncycletour.com/
  6. Dot 5.1, 3 and 4 brake fluids are glycol based which makes them hygroscopic. Hygroscopic means that they absorb moisture from the atmosphere. So, unless you've stored it in an air-tight container in a desicant rich environment, it will in all probability be useless. It absorbs water/moisture at about 2-3% per year. Going by that there most probably is about 20% water in that bottle of brake fluid. As others have said, dipose of it responsibly and next time buy just enough for your immediate need.
  7. On my Garmin Edge 705 the distance over a previous CTCT route differed by less than 100m compared to my "back-up" Ryder cycling computer. That's a difference of 0.09%, and I doubt you will get it any better than that. The Garmin only use the GPS for speed and distance, and I VERY painstakingly made sure about the circumference of the wheel that had the magnet attached to it for the speed and distance on the Ryder cycling computer.
  8. I do not know about the build quality of this rack, but I think it's a very cost effective option. I saw this "Dixon" branded 3 bike towbar-mount cycle rack at the Cash Crusaders at President Square in Vanderbijlpark for R1876 and it's new, not second hand. I have attached a photo of the cycle rack still in its box. If I did not already have a 3 bike rack, I would have seriously considered this one to start off with.
  9. What about this company? http://www.easitape.co.za/ Or this: http://www.tape-market.co.za/
  10. Did you have a look at Cycle Lab's financing option through WesBank? http://cyclelab.com/cycle-lab-finance-by-wesbank/
  11. Lucky for me I have access to an ultrasonic bath, which REALLY cleans out all of the grit and gunk from the chain. I do this every couple of months, and after it's been cleaned out properly and completely dry, I lubricate it well after putting it back on the bike.
  12. In my defence I did say it was just before I turned 40.... I also learned that eventually. :-)
  13. Just before I turned 40, I realised that I was turning into the proverbial couch potato and I need to start getting some excercise. I went to a LBS and purchased a yellow and black Raleigh RC2000. Included in the price was a Cateye Astrale cycling computer. When I went to collect the bicycle after they set it up, ready for me to use, I asked the person assisting me if they made sure they set the circumference of the wheel correctly on the Cateye to get the correct speed reading. I was looked at with a blank stare and was told "We don't enter anything on the computer, you just move the magnet and sensor closer or further away from the axle to adjust the speed reading untill it's the right reading"! My explanations of speed=distance over time and C=2π*r was met with even blanker stares. When I began realising I was fighting a losing battle I just took my new bike home and entered the correct value.

  15. HaHa! My "boy" actually is just over 30 years old, but he has fairly recently adopted my loving of cycling. He has however hinted that it perhaps is time to get some decent shoes and pedals. When I gave him my old bike, it actually had some Shimano SPD R540 pedals on, but he said he wasn't feeling very confident about cycling with cycling shoes. We still have them and he probably will get proper cycling shoes in the not too distant future.
  16. To add on to this, kudos to my son for improving from just under 6 hours (05:41)for his last cycle tour to 04:11 this year! He also lost 36kg since then, and also started doing marathons. He "quickly" worked in a 1/2 marathon the weekend befo re the "Argus", finishing it in 1:53. He is currently riding with my 2008 Raleigh RC4500 with sneakers and strap in pedals.
  17. That's exactly how I understood it to work, as it was explained to me by a Racetec official. Since then I have always started my Garmin the moment the start signal goes off, and stopped it when I crossed the timing mat at the finish line. My recorded time and official time on the Racetec website usually corresponds very well.
  18. My son and I arrived back home yesterday evening after flying back from Cape Town. This, without a doubt, was my best cycle tour ever! Not best in terms of time, but because of how much I enjoyed it! I am by no means in the league of most of the cyclists here on the Hub, being a middle aged (55), slightly overweight cyclist. My best time ever was 03:57 WAY back in 2007 and this year my time was 04:26. This was my third best time ever. After finishing without having to stop even once for water, and thought how good I felt after each of the climbs I realised that i could have pushed myself a bit harder and maybe even achieved a personal best. But, I went out with the intention to go out and enjoy a day out in the saddle enjoying the views, scenery, camaraderie and the awesome support from all the spectators. Without them this race would just not be the same. My thoughts goes out to the families of those that have succumbed doing what they loved. Hopefully I will be back in another year or two, but I am limiting myself after I have done 10 in succession to only once every couple of years. At about R10K for a couple of days in the Cape it isn't a cheap thrill!
  19. I was just about to write the same, then i saw this posting. Surely there must be literally thousands of vehicles of various shapes and sizes that will be comming back from Cape Town back up north. My son and i will be flying there and back, otherwise I would have gladly offered to assist the OP.
  20. I turned 55 yesterday, and my son and I went out for a ride from Sasolburg to Parys and back, which is almost exactly a 80km round trip. We pushed it a bit, seeing it will be our last longish distance before the CTCT. Our bicycles are going down to CT this Thursday. We did it in under 3 hours, and I got 13 trophies on Strava! 10 of them was PRs. I was quite chuffed with myself! Ha Ha!
  21. I got myself some sunglasses at Dischem which has built-in reading glasses that works VERY well for my cycling needs. It cost about R140 and they're on the same rack where the other normal clear reading glasses is. I can even see 3 fields on my Garmin Edge now!
