  1. yeah thats a big problem in this country. the speed limit says 120 and no matter what the conditions and whats in my way I will do 120(or more) and be damned everything or everyone else.
  2. Sadly on saturday morning near my house a biker lost his life and his 10 year old daughter is still in ICU. I dont know many details as I only received the message on our community whatsapp group. Judging by the time of the message it was early morning. My guess was the low rising sun behind the bike prevented the vehicle at the intersection from seeing the bike. Knowing that intersection, and being early morning, the likely hood was that the bakkie went through a red light, not seeing the bike with the sun behind it. Very very sad. Hopefully the little girl pulls through.
  3. my normal road bike.
  4. I'm also a heavy sweater. My work commute used to be 16km with fair climb in it. The last 5km though were flat and downhill so I would ride slow through there and cool down as much as possible before getting to work. also no showers at work, but I'd get there earlier than most people and use the disabled bathroom (as its always bigger) and do a wash down with a cloth and basin.
  5. this is the kind of info I need. Thanks. So it looks like it wont be a cheap exercise unless I forego all the modern nice to haves.
  6. imovie is also free, but Ive never really used it much, so not sure of its capabilities or restrictions.
  7. hardware and hardrives not a big issue. I'm pretty decently setup with apple stuff from doing photography. Software, I guess depending on what I want to do could be an issue.
  8. Thanks for the options chaps.
  9. I was going through a few Youtube vids of the 2023 CTCT to show the family what its like and the wife joked about getting an action cam for my bike. This got me thinking, next year is #21 for my mate, so we will ride together, the year after is #21 for me, so we will ride together. It might be a nice little momento to have some footage of us. But I know new GoPros, especially the latest versions, are rather pricey. So, do I start looking at used GoPros, or look at other brands. There is no budget for this, so the preliminary investigation would be into options and their pricing so that I can try and work towards getting something.
  10. Learn to do the basics. My mate bought a new to him bike a few months back, after riding it for a bit he decided he wanted some easier gearing. In typical fashion for my mate he left it to the last minute, took it to a bike shop and got them to do the work. Credit to him, he did a good few rides before heading down to PE for 70.3. When I chatted to him after the event he mentioned the gears were jumping and he was not happy. Once we got together in Cape Town I spent 5 minutes with the bike, adjusted the cable tension and it was pretty spot on when stationary. We then took a ride where we stopped once to make some slight changes and from there on it was 100%.
  11. yep its rather pricey heading down there these days. It can be done cheaper than that 12k. But I had to call in favours and share expenses and find bargains. It still cost me more than I was hoping for, but thats mainly down to us not being budget conscious with our food choices. I think the late entry fee is a good thing. The organisers need to budget, with large numbers of people entering last minute it makes budgeting and negotiating better rates difficult. I'm hoping the shorter route will keep the numbers propped up and keep the event viable for years to come. Its become a tradition for us over the last 20 something years, and like LWB said in the other thread, there is no uhming and ahing about IF we will enter, entering is a given.
  12. The multiply thing is irritating the crap out of me because I cant seem to find a way of linking my device. maybe its because I'm not a premium member.
  13. yeah the M3 being closed for longer messed us around slightly for our return to Muizenberg, landed up taking the M5. thankfully know the route so wasnt to concerned. Although our traditional post race analysis as we travel along the route we'd just ridden was lost.
  14. i think this is the main reason they introduced the shorter route, to try and get more people, if I recall they were sayin into total (both routes) it was 28 000 entrants. Still way down though. As for catering for the various religions, it would be interesting to see the stats of how many from each religious group. Right now we are thumbsucking.
  15. some guy ahead of me lost a good few hundred rands on the blue route. He pulled out a gel and stack of R100 notes went flying.
  16. If you get a buddy or three together it helps to share costs.
  17. So the racetec results shave 30s off my time to give me a 3:36 82/316 in my group. happy with the result. now to find 16 minutes for next year. already hit PBs on the 4 big climbs this year.
  18. Came here to check who I can email about my results being wrong, but see everyone is complaining. will wait to see what transpires. and yes, some years I would receive the racetec sms with my result before I had a chance to finish my free coke and find a place to sit.
  19. Started in 2A. My goal, sub3:30 Looking around at the start and just about everyone has number indicating they’ve done 10plus rides. Awesome, we have some experience. climbed up through the neutral zone onto the highway, settled in and then added a dash of speed working my way to the front of the bunch. played it safe on the decent leading up to Edinburg and then proceeded to work up to the front of the group up the climb. Jumping onto the M3 tucked in behind some guys and the group just swelled to about 30. We kept a comfortable pace heading down main rd and for once I did not feel nervous sitting in the Centre of the group. By the time we got to fish hoek the group swelled some more, it was HUGE. After boulders is where it started to get sketchy, and twice we almost came to a complete standstill. I still don’t know why. By the time we crested Smits there was no more group. I thought they were further up the road, so I put the hammer down and proceeded to have guys trying to tuck in behind me, but they kept dropping off. Eventually through scoborough all the way up to the climb out of misty cliffs it was just 3 of us with the hammer down, every wheel sucker we picked up could not hang on. but I think that broke my legs. I was feeling it after that. we found a group to shelter behind from ocean view through to chappies, with my legs aching I let everyone go and just settled into a rhythm. On the little kicker just before suikerbossie my legs cramped, I pushed through and just decided to take it very easy up suikers. Down the other side I picked up some shelter from a group and followed them through to seapoint, from there I let them go and just ground my way, gritting my teeth to the end. my garmin time shows 3:37. I’ll take that thank you.
  20. Found the most comfortable pair of gloves at your stand. Hopefully I win the voucher, then I can get the gloves and some new bibs and things.
  21. Pulled over at Salt but decided to just head back to muizenberg. By the time we spoke crap and showered we decided to just head to Hudson’s for an early lunch.
  22. 2 for R100 is the normal expo special. and we were there like 11am yesterday, surely that should have had more stock.
