  1. Cool. Cheers Hubbers. On the plane to the big smoke in the am tomorrow to hang with the Gauties for the 94.7. I'll be the chap with the Q number starting in SS. Shout hello.
  2. Cool. He's back. Hope you have a lekka ride and get surprised at how styling it is to have the whole of JHB's roads closed so you can ride around the entire city on highways and all, like a private party for just cyclists and have the non cyclists cheering you on and other helpers trying to give you free energy drink, and a carinval of sorts for cyclists who make the trip there on the day, some from countries far afield and see something or someone who inspires you to continue to do this crazy thing we all enjoy out on the route. Couple of hundred bucks for the above? Value for money I say. Type up something post the ride.
  3. You would think they may be more accomodating in this regard considering they sponsor some race series.
  4. FBS, you don't seem to care as much about the outcome as much as you do about somebody paying. What's your real agenda??
  5. Crazy to think it's punks like this that continue to slip through the cracks in the law and ruin the quality of other peoples lives without the slightest show of remorse. Enjoyed the link to the other story as much too. http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/comment-conviction-of-road-rage-doctor-is-landmark-case-23855
  6. If I have to be honest and admit it, my worst cramping moments are when I don't have the required training done ahead of the aspirations in the race I overload in.
  7. I have no vested interest in this topic, but feel the following needs some attention. I find it quite strange that the majority of you are prepared to bash cradleresident. Here is a chap who is making the time to collate the feelings of the majority of residents in the area, use up some more time to remove all the hearsay about whether the cycling crew using the area are ACTUALLY in the wrong and providing the evidence thereof on a site used by us. Not only has he gone out of his way to meet the cyclists' in 'their domain' but used up more than his '18 minutes' too. The least the cycling community can do is show the chap some respect. I dare any of you who feel so threatened by his dealings here to set up a meeting with the residents of the area and go and give them your side of things in an attempt to find some middle ground. Didn't think so. Really only two kinds of people in the world. Those content to be part of the problem and those looking to find a solution. Quite obvious who is on which side of the line in this topic.
  8. It would depend on the details of your training plan and aspirations. Someone who trains all year round and has a proper structure of base training and specific periods of strength vs interval based training will do things differently to someone who started training 4 weeks before the event. Obviously if you're simply looking to enjoy the event instead of doing a PB your training will be structured differently too. The biggest factor should be your own recovery time in relation to how much training you have done. You're not going to fit in any 'magic' training session that will shave time of your result in the last week. You can only impede your performance on the day of the event by getting things wrong. Do proper warm ups and cool downs after rides, don't ride at heavy intensity for periods that require days to recover, but stay on the bike in that week. If you've been doing this for a while you will know what it takes to have 'fresh' legs on the day. If not, you need to experiment a little til you get what works for you, considering the variables already mentioned. This is the reason why the serious crew have specific programs designed by trainers. Good luck. Tubehunter2009-11-10 04:46:12
  9. 1st 94.7 for me, but have plenty other races under the belt. Coming up to the big smoke to do it as I have got my 64 year old mother into cycling and it will be her first race.
  10. Hope none of them get rides on the radioshack team then....
  11. Who on the Pro Tour is NOT a doped cyclist? They would not be able to even compete let alone feature.
  12. I think Rad and Chucky should ride the 94.7 together.
  13. The problem is usually the adjusted winners time. WCE actual time = 2:01;34 - 'seeding' winners time = 1:55;39 Durbanville actual time = 2:15;49 - 'seeding' winners time = 2:11;19 With it being this way even the winner is on the fringe of the first group. He would have to finish 4-5 minutes ahead of himself to have zero'd, without that being adjusted forward again. Eishh... Gotta love this adjusted winners time thing. Only the seeding series races are weighted enough to use the true actual finishers time.
  14. From the seeding site: For events that took place before the previous funride season, ?penalties? will be added as these results are less current than events that took place in the last season. These ?penalties? are generally 5% per year. Obviously the index from the previous years event will change as the same event transpires. That said a fair reflection of your seeding will require 3 current long rides from this years series. (Hopefully you had decent rides in all of them)
  15. I cycle from Parklands to Mowbray daily. I go down Gie and onto Koeberg, all the way through to Maitland. The only stretch along Koeberg that's a bit dodgy is from the caltex garage through to Plattekloof Rd. Not much shoulder there. If you're leaving after 6:30 the traffic is usually so backed up it's not much of an issue.
  16. What's the point of joining the club if they are NOT GOING TO HELP YOU even if you are in the wrong and have as a beginner joined the wrong group?? Too few clubs in all sports have an 'onboarding' type of ambassador to assist the newbies transition into being an educated member and usually these same clubs moan there is no new fresh talent coming through too.... 17. I was on Gie this morning at that time. Dimension Data kit with yello helmet.
  18. I did the 2005 Epic. It was 897km and 18200m of climb. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had on two wheels. I enjoyed knowing we had cycled from Knysna to Cape Town through the mountains. That was the appeal after all. This did however make the route very long and somewhat like a road type race on jeep tracks and secondary roads, which detracts from the idea of it being a mountain bike event. In that year there were only 2 days that had any form of technical terrain and I was amazed to see that the vast majority of competitors did not have the MTB bike handling skills to negiotiate these on the bike. Obviously in the early years the organisers may have been appealing to a more broad based cyclist than what they are doing now, now that it is an established event. As a mountain biker I prefer the idea of the route being shorter but having substantially more technical terrain, which utimately translates into longer saddle time anyway. So don't think that it will be far less an Epic simply because there is 25% less distance. I doubt the event will ever become a single base structure as there is only so many routes you can ride in a loop. They have kept the magic alive by delivering a unique route each year. Kudos to that, as this is afterall the major drawcard and what makes this such a special week in one's life. I highly recommend it for nothing other than to experience what it feels like to be a 'pro' cyclist on a multiday stage race. Especially amongst the company around and accessible.
  19. Not sure how many Frenchies there are here but I found this: http://andy-schleck85.skyrock.com/2666170632-Le-duel-Andy-Schleck-vs-Burry-Stander.html
  20. This is such a sensitive topic and as a surfer and regular water enthusiast I simply feel this is very wrong. I once read a report in some conservation publication that put it all in to perspective for me. Have tried to track it down online but can't find it. (I read it in hard paper copy a couple of years ago.) I'll attempt to do it justice. Basically a shark has multiple senses that it uses a combination of when hunting. They have the 5 senses we as humans do. See, smell, touch, taste and hear. They do however have an additional 6th sense that is fairly well documented but misunderstood, known as electro location. Every LIVING organism gives off some form of electric pulse in the water. The shark's sensor in its snout can pick up roughly half a billionth of a volt in the water. i.e. It can sense the weakest of pulse\smallest living creatures in the water. Thankfully the range of this sense is very small and varies from a couple of inches to a few meters. In the wild it typically uses this during feeding frenzies. Think of the sardine run. Sharks are able to plough through the schools of fish where their other senses will be overwhelmed and are yet able to avoid taking out one another. This sense is its primary sense during that time. Another example is if you think of the anti shark POD device that came about a couple of years ago. That specifically attempts to overstimulate this sense and in so doing chase off the shark from the immediate vicinity. When you look at the chumming scenerio and the cage diving combo it raises some questionable concerns. The operators are using the sharks primary sense of smell to attract the shark. Everyone knows it can detect the smell of blood from kilometers away. So the sharks come to the site of the boat from the smell of the chum. At the site it will incorporate it's other senses to assess the scene where the only electric pulse being given off is that of the divers in the cages though. The chum is dead and therefore does not give off any of the electric pulses the shark could detect. The chum is the reason the sharks approach the cage much to the shark operators delight. He's seeing dollar bills baby. This does however change the entire scope for accidental human interaction for any shark exposed to this practise from then on. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise how the dynamic has been changed. Probably the primary reason why various agencies involved in shark protection advocate the culling of sharks that have attacked humans. I guess we all know that it's wrong but until I understood this process I didn't understand why. Here's a video that explains it a little better. Naturally this sense varies in ability depending on which shark is involved. http://animal.discovery.com/videos/fooled-by-nature-hammerhead-shark-hunting-methods.html Some additional info that explains it more for those of you who want to better understand the details. http://jeb.biologists.org/cgi/content/full/205/7/703/i http://www.theallineed.com/ecology/06021705.htm Sorry for the length of this post, but it requires proper justification.
  21. Would Finish Line be the best option for the East Rand?? I'm in CT and my Mom who is new to cycling is in Benoni. Need to get her to a LBS that will help with servicing. Suggestions?? Thanks in advance.
  22. Indeed I am a very proud son to see my Mom get into cycling and more specifically MTB'ing. Flying to JHB to do our first 94.7 in a couple of weeks and start doing the 'classic' events around the country. Good job Mom!!!!
