  1. The saga continues! New caliper fitted by the dealer, but the system is still sucking air. Seems a new master cylinder might be needed as well 😟
  2. The story has a happy ending! They relooked at the case and have decided to help me with a new caliper on warranty. I am very happy with the outcome and grateful to the two chaps at Coolheat who made the call to help me. However, it should never have come to this. A warranty claim is a procedure that is based on evidence and information. A lack of either does not mean a claim is rejected out of hand, it means more information and evidence must be gathered. Will have my bike back on Monday 🤞🏻
  3. Assuming they are being consistent with the truth the main issue they highlighted is that the dealer should not have stripped the caliper. There is apparently a liability issue and Shimano themselves have this policy. They listed some other reasons, like the form wasn't filled in correctly, incorrect/incomplete info which lead to rejection. Fair enough, but then engage with the dealer and customer to try and sort it out. I'm still waiting to see if they will make an offer to assist me. If not, I will repair with the parts from Robert and move on.
  4. I have had a reply to my email from one of the technical people there with an explanation from they as to why the claim was rejected. I understand fully from their side the reasons for doing so. I am still the moer in as to why a brake less than a year old has failed this way and why no compromise was offered to make it right. They have undertaken to have a chat internally and see what they can do.
  5. I asked for the policy on my post, I have also now sent them an email and a Facebook message as well asking for the same info and whether they would like to reach out to me to explain. I see the Facebook message has been read, but surprise surprise, no reply. If I hear nothing by Monday I will be phoning them and asking to speak to the boss. If he won't speak to me I will go to their offices, they are just down the road from me Update: Got the email read receipt. No reply as yet
  6. Just a little follow up to show the terrible level of customer engagement from Coolheat. I posted on Twitter 3 days ago, tagging them and asking what the warranty policy was for these pistons and why they wouldn't help when Shimano overseas appears to help customers. Zero reply. So, I go to their Facebook page and ask the exact same question with a pic of the broken piston attached. No reply or attempt to reach out to me and they deleted the post within 10 minutes, What an absolute bunch of thugs. I will never ever again consider supporting Coolheat locally.
  7. Extender is not needed for the new Deore 11 speed. The 11-51 cassette is standard and will work with the M5100-SGS rear derailleur. Looks like the b-tension is not correct
  8. The spring and the roller bearing clutch are two different things. Have a look at the SRAM parts catalogue, there are 6 part numbers available for the rear derailleur, none of them are related to the clutch. I've done my research Thanks! I'll keep in mind for future
  9. Thanks Robert! Sent you a PM
  10. I've got the Heppe piston replacement kit in my sights if no one can help What really annoys me is that both the big S brands do this. I've recently replaced a perfectly good GX Eagle derailleur which had a pap clutch. At least the Shimano clutches can be serviced and parts are available for them.
  11. Alas, @droodoes not have the size I need. Thankful for his offer of help from him. Still on the lookout for a 15mm caliper piston
  12. Thanks @droo! Dropped you a PM
  13. Need to blow off some steam. I've had my Trek Top Fuel since December last year. Great bike and I'm enjoying it immensely. One small issue was the rear brake was always a bit squishy, even after numerous attempts at bleeding it. It got to the point that the rear brake was almost useless around three weeks ago. So I took it in to my local shop who diagnosed a broken piston in the caliper. I shared the bike's invoice with them and they sent a warranty claim through to Shimano. I got feedback today, that sorry the pistons are not covered and I must cough for a new caliper. What the actual?! This was an issue from new that I was struggling with. A bit more digging reveals that Shimano doesn't even make the pistons available as spare parts. So much for sustainability and looking after the customer! Properly annoyed 🤬 Anyway, if someone has a Shimano caliper that they are not using with 15mm a piston, please let me know as I'd like to repair the caliper so I have a spare as the final insult is that these pistons seem to brake for vokol. All sorted in the end!
  14. DT Swiss with the 54t upgrade was loudest. Next is the Lyne.
  15. I can add that I've been running a this hub on my Hyrax for over a year now. No complaints at all. I've cleaned it out and greased it twice now in that time and found the bearings running smoooooooth. Some DT Swiss special grease on the pawls and ratchet ring quieten the buzz down nicely. I've also had great experiences with DT Swiss 350, Hope and the Bontrager Rapid Drive hubs
  16. And there is the problem “fit and forget”. Hubs need regular servicing, just like any other mechanical part. Neglect it or abuse it and it will let you down eventually
  17. That KTM has a weight limit of 129kg. Agree with the previous posts that a proper trail type hard tail that is built tough would be a better option.
  18. New caliper pistons: Heppe Bike Hydraulic Brake Caliper Ceramic Piston Mtb Road Bike Disc Brake Piston For M640 M810 M820 M7120 M8120 M9120 4-piston - Bicycle Brake - AliExpress Master cylinder rebuild parts: Slx M7100 Xt M8100 Hydraulic Brake Handle Repair Accessories Diaphragm Piston Spring Oil Seal Screw Brake Handle Parts - Bicycle Brake - AliExpress
  19. My master cylinders are fine, pistons not so much. Also, Aliexpress has full rebuild kits available for the master cylinders and calipers
  20. A positive story from my side. My GX Eagle derailleur clutch went pap. Looked all over the web and confirmed the clutch cannot be serviced or repaired, which is pretty piss poor IMO. So I took the plunge and ordered up an SLX rear derailleur. Fitted everything up on Friday afternoon, got the limit screws set, b-tension and cable tension without much fuss. GX Eagle shifter, GX Eagle cassette (10-52) and an X01 chain which should not work, if the people from the brands are to believed. Turns out everything works smoothAF. First ride on the Saturday and I am back to riding a stealthy bike with no chainslap and lovely smooth shifts!
  21. Please please please give a report back. I've ridden dirt bikes in Lesotho and loved it, so I think this will be ama-zing!
  22. Most riders don't even experiment with their suspension settings to get an optimal setup nor do they service them as required to keep them running smoothly. In those cases you may as well ride a rigid bike 🤷🏼‍♂️
  23. There are several previous gen Trek Top Fuels in the classifieds in size S at the moment. Perfect marathon / XC type bike. This one I linked to below looks like a winner and it is in JHB. The extra travel (115mm rear) will help with comfort on the longer trails and there is a lockout (sies) if the ride demands it. Nothing to upgrade either as it comes with nice lightweight carbon wheels, excellent suspension and a reliable drivetrain.: Trek Top Fuel 9.8 (S) | Bike Hub
  24. Take ownership of problems and mistakes and sort the customer out without making a fuss about it. Case in point, my Hyrax needed a new front triangle under warranty. As part of that I had to pay for the labour for the job to be done and for new AMS frame stickers. The dealer who did the work sold me the bike originally and has been nothing short of excellent in all the work they have done for me since, including several wheel builds. When I got the bike back I found the following issues when I was going over it in my garage. The crank was not installed properly, the flip chip in the shock was in the wrong way round, the torque values on the rear suspension pivot bolts were all over the place, the lower headset cup was not aligned as it had been on the previous frame and the new AMS had oily fingerprints showing though. I contacted the owner of the shop, as I really just wanted the headset cup aligned (my ADD shining through) as I had fixed the other issues and I was prepared to live with the AMS stickers being a bit gungy. He promised to sort out the headset issue and use the problems as a training exercise with his staff. When I picked the bike up, all the AMS stickers had been replaced and the headset was as I wanted it. No arguing, no fuss and no shouting at mechanics in front of customers. Although I was initially very the moer in, the shop did everything they could to recover the situation and make me happy.
  25. SQLab saddle highly recommended. Make contact with GPM sports, they bring them in locally and will sort you out with the correct saddle and size for you needs
