  1. It depends if you really are serious in reading alternative viewpoints. Only those that are able to look at things from both perspectives equally, generally find the truth. There are many sources to read that highlite the health disadvantages of a very low carb diet, with the emphasis on very low or ketogenic diets in normal people. Seek and you shall find ... Better you find it yourself than somebody recommends sources, otherwise it's a case of shoot the messenger on a close minded forum of low carbers. It's almost a given that with continuous Low Carb diets that you are going to have reduced ability to process glucose. At least initially when you do consume again and depending on how long you did, it might take a long time for your body to heal again, if ever. Stress, low calories and heavy endurance exercise increases estrogen, damages mitochondria, lowers metabolism, increases cortisol and adrenaline etc, all the stress hormones wich cause rapid aging, heart damage and calcification of arteries. First to go is reduced thymus size (immune system) , thyroid gland size, sex drive, etc, etc.
  2. Just another warning to those that believe all the internet "guru's " out there and also here on this thread. Peter Attia make the following reply to a comment on his latest blog post here, http://eatingacademy.com/sports-and-nutrition/ketones-carbohydrates-can-co-exist?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ketones-carbohydrates-can-co-exist "Tim, I’m not sure I agree with your assessment, though I appreciate the length you’ve gone to in describing your experience. What you’re suggesting is that it requires more moles of oxygen per unit ATP when oxidizing fat than glucose. This is not the case. The reverse is true." Well, actually, he, Peter Attia, is very wrong. Glucose oxidation produces 6.3 ATP energy / O2 molecule Fatty acid oxidation produces 4.1 ATP energy / O2 molecule Or in other words, glucose produces 53% more net energy per molecule of Oxygen. sources, too many to name, but 2 quick ones: http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/98/13/1350a.full http://www.heartandmetabolism.com/download/53/8.pdf
  3. You are an example of exactly the problem of what's wrong with the medical profession these days. Your sense of "entitlement" and being like "God" ... I am so happy I am not your patient... and hope I am never at the mercy of somebody like you . I wish you would show me one example of your peers that takes issue succesfully with Ray Peat's research on the basis of merit and facts.
  4. I don't have to do any such thing. I don't make claims for cures. I have provided the references. Go to Ray Peat.com and read his articles, educate yourself. Every single one of them is fully referenced. He has a Phd with 50 years of experience. And You ? You just have to start reading, ..which you obviously haven't. Maybe a bit less time riding bike and chasing blonde girls so you can maybe one day care for your patients better ?
  5. I don't think anyone has so far said there is a specific substance as "cure" for RLS. Rather, many things that seems to work for different people. We don't know why that is. There is the underlying energy problem, but as to what magic "substances" will "cure" it for everyone, every time, at will or with a single pill, I don't think there will be any time soon. People are too different, and can have many different conditions that also play a role. If you are a multi billion dollar pharmaceutical company with many lines of products, many of them which treats the symptoms of a specific disease, would you fund the research of a "cure", especially if the "cure" is something as simple and inexpensive as salt or aspirin ?
  6. If grammar and spelling mistakes in posts not checked for them are the only thing you can find wrong with my facts or reasoning, then yes, I plead guilty. Do you have anything usefull to add besides not liking my attitude ?
  7. What was MY solution to RLS ?
  8. I don't know to what you are referring to here, but as an fellow engineer by training, I find your comment, "otherwise I think it is all placebo" strange. Not knowing why something is working, you can't just the same make the argument and contribute it's success as being a placebo ? If you study the peer review process, you'll recognise, if you are not naive, that it's a highly biased process with studies setup to favour the sponsor's interests mostly, especially these days when most funding is scarce and 90 % of funded research comes from industry . Doctors, especially, have become puppets of the pharmaceutical industry and just recite what the agents of these companies tell them and have hardly the time to do their own individual, independent research.
  9. I can asure you that I did my research very well. What statement of mine has you up in arms ? Even water can kill you with the wrong dosis ...
  10. I guess all the people that get side effects must be imagining it then ? I've also heard that argument from many a drug addict and marijuana user. I beg to differ, and the science suggest otherwise, but let's leave it at that.
  11. I think it's generally a bad idea to use pharmaceutical drugs to treat symptoms that have causes that can be treated better with natural remedies like good nutrition and better life style decisions. Most drugs have side effects and can cause other problems. Pexola is an anti-Parkinson's drug. It has nausea, vomiting, sleepiness , dizziness and fatigue as common side effects ...
  12. Energy depleted state and slow energy regeneration. Your body is in fatigued state and resting metabolism is dialed down by down regulating your thyroid. This causes many problems. One of which is increased inflammation and increased stress hormones, of which serotonin is one. Serotonin is known to cause insomnia and restless sleep and restless leggs. Estrogen is another stress hormone that is increased significantly in stressed or overtrained men and woman. Estrogen combine with PUFA's in your system to cause or contribute to, and accelerate many of today's degenerative diseases. You could also have a sodium (salt) deficiency wich leads to an excess aldosterone hormone which try to prevent further sodium loss, but at the expense of magnesium and calsium loss. So in short a mineral deficiency as well. My advice (imho and for whats it worth) , rest, rest more and eat plenty of sugar, calsium, milk, salt and protein, and get your thyroid checked out. Insomnia, worry and "restless legs" at bedtime are problems for many old people, and I think they are variations of the basic energy-depletion problem. In the hormonal environment dominated by estrogen, mild stresses such as exertion, or even restless sleep, allow toxins (and sometimes bacteria) from the intestine to enter the bloodstream, triggering a complex chain of events that create a systemic inflammatory state. Although these processes have been observed in many simple experiments, their implications are almost always neglected or denied or explained away. Incorporation of certain polyunsaturated fats into the tissues increases the leakiness of blood vessels, and amplifies the reactions to stresses and inflammatory stimuli. Antioxidants, thyroid hormone, progesterone, and antiinflammatory agents, including glycine or gelatin, niacin, and saturated fats, can prevent, and in many cases reverse, these degenerative inflammatory processes. Most of the facts are known, but they have seldom been put together in meaningful patterns, which would let us see that a few simple principles govern a great range of disturbing phenomena: seizures, shock, hypertension, fibrillation, cramps, restless legs, coma, insomnia, obsessive thinking, migraine, hyperactivity, even cell death and aging.”
  13. I'll try too, just give me some time.
  14. A lot of people are probably allergic to the fillers and other compounds used in products like "Disprin" Try getting a generic aspirin (actice ingredient) (walk past the show displays and to the pharmacy in the back and ask for it, also 90% cheaper) then dissolve in warm water and let it settle. Drink only the water and not the settlement. See how it goes then. Aspirin is very beneficial for health. It is a very good anti inflammatory with many other benefits too. The pharmaceutical industry won't tell you this.
  15. Hi guys Restless leggs, insomnia, low libido, regular nose bleeding and asthma are all related to over stressed cells, hormone imbalances and insufficient energy or broken metabolism. Those that are really interested in helping their own health should take the time and read the articles by Ray Peat PhD. I promise you, you will learn a lot. I will try to find where he specifically mentioned restless legs and post it here, but his articles have a ton of very valuable physiological facts that he gives for free and is the result of 50 years of research and practice. Just one warning though, you have to have time to read properly as his writing style is very scientifically minded sometimes and is probably not for everyone to understand.
  16. WHAT !! ? Isn't ketones supposed to be the ultimate fuel ? Ketogenic supposed to be the ultimate metabolic state ? Welcome back from the walking dead ! Ps. Another tip, dump the nuts and replace with more sugar or carbs. You want as little as possible PUFA's in your diet. And if you really want to get to the next level, PM me and I'll give you some reading that will blow your mind ! (oh, and the other LC sect disciples, don't bother trying to rip my head off ( I'll check in again next week to see how much are still living), one day you will thank me and say I was right all along. )
  17. No problem. I thought I was actually discussing LCHF, but I guess none is as blind than those that refuse to see. You are just as guilty as the same persons and doctors you acuse of promoting HC diets. You choose to ignore counter evidence and seeks only those opinions that agree with yours. Not very scientific, but your choice still. Die young happily with CVD (hopefully thinner at least). Adios.
  18. Do I understand this correctly ? You dont believe in statins, was not on it before, but NOW you are on it ? When was the last time you tested your Thyroid function ? What was the results ?
  19. Those of you that actually took the time to read some of Ray Peat's work will know that he is all about a healthy metabolic rate and good Thyroid hormone function. His stuff can be a bit difficult to read for the non-scientific minded, so here is a article that explains it all in a much more user friendly way. http://valtsus.blogspot.fi/2013/08/thyroid-hormones-and-heart-disease_13.html in 1973, Barnes published some of his patient data in his article On the genesis of atherosclerosis. The occurrence of CVD in his 1500+ patients was 94% lower than Framingham statistics would have predicted. This is a remarkable results considering that Barnes didn't advocate his patients to quit smoking or change their other habits.
  20. but then you dont know what the difference in PUFA or anti oxidant use was between the 2 groups and you therefore cannot really claim a "control" group as the vegetable oil was not the only variable ... Statistics 101
  21. Indeed, and as Ray Peat is explaing below, why was the control group not given anti-oxidants as well and why was their diet not made free of PUFA's ? The short time of such experiments is also of concern since short term benefits ito anti-inflamation does not necessarily contribute to long term health or benefits. One way to evaluate published studies is to see whether they tell you everything you would need to know to replicate the experiment, and whether the information they provide is adequate for drawing the conclusions they draw, for example whether they compared the experimental subjects to proper control subjects. With just a few minimal critical principles of this sort, most "scientific" publications on nutrition, endocrinology, cancer and other degenerative diseases are seen to be unscientific. In nutritional experiments with fish oil, controls must receive similar amounts of vitamins A, D, E, and K, and should include fat free or "EFA" deficient diets for comparison.
  22. Interesting 2 min video explaining how quickly PUFA's oxidises and what happens to it if left exposed to oxygen. Interesting in the end how he shows that coconut oil acts as a solvent for the oxidised PUF !
  23. As far as I know Dr Robert Lustig have not shown or proven yet that higher carbodydrate consumption causes diabetes. He is a pediatrician, not a scientific researcher. Carbohydrates includes sugar and starches. You have to control for both, as well as other things in diet, or your hormonal profile. It is not as simple matter of how many carbs, and then by association draw the conclusion (as proof) that it causes diabetes. Diabetes, by definiton as the inability of the body's cells to properly oxidise and use glucose, is not caused by sugar according to Ray Peat. PUFA's block the mitochondrial's function to properly utilize glucose and instead to form lactate. Estrogen, lack of CO2 and other stress hormones also contribute to this process. When this has already happened, or is continually happening, then of course sugar will tend to build up in the blood or get converted to fat via excess insulin secretion. There are a lot more articles on his website explaining these processes .
  24. Ja, well, actually my comment was sarcastic as well, but nobody seems to get it, must be all the flaxseed ...
  25. The mexicans are also the poorer of the 2 nations. Therefore their intake of PUFA's is probably also way higher than the US.
