  2. Agree, get hold of Maryka Verster. She is really good at what she does and speciaises in mtb. She has done a few good article on our web site www.alloutmtb.co.za. Go have a look under the training section. You wll also find her contact details there.
  3. I totally agree that You have spend at least 1/3 of your time on skills and technique. Just for the record on my two crashes, one was at Isuzu 3 towers. Was doing 33km/h on flat gravel road(light rain, nothing technical), front tyre suddenly slipped out underneath me, no warning nothing. Long story short, later realize there's a small strip of soap stone on the left-hand side of th road which you can barely see. If your wheel crosses that piece of hidden rock bed, you will slip, you cant even stand on it, that slippery. What I want to say is, I have the best technical skills of all my friends, I do a fountains (next to groenkloof) 7km lap in 18min. Sometimes all the technical skills in the world wont keep you from falling but it will surely help you to be faster and enjoy the technical part more. Check out our fountains trail video on www.alloutmtb.co.za
  4. The best way to climb better is to climb more. Since I started mtb 14months ago I told myself I love hills and climbing. Except for training, fuel, technique etc, its also a big mental challenge that you have to win from the start. I lost 21kg in 6 months, now on 86kg with 7% body fat. I made peace with the fact that I will never get down to 80kg or less. Theres just no more fat to loose. Oh yes, I'm 32year. So the next step for me was getting stronger, fitter and winning the mental battle. I also quickly realize that with mountain biking it not all just about leg strength, full body strength and core strength is just as if not more important to power yourself up those lovely technical climbs. And please remember, core strength is not having a six pack of abs. Core muscles are the ones you cant see. And its also important to exercise your core muscle to keep your body steady. I see so many guys training their core to move instead of using static core exercises like planks, renegade rows, standing ball slams etc etc. In terms of full body strength. The normal gym program sitting on a bench doing dumbbell curls, or lying down doing bench press or leg extensions etc, is not gonna get you far with mountain biking. You have to teach your muscles to work together not in isolation. Your a mtb'er not a body builder. In terms of training leg strength and fitness on the bike or even on a spinning bike. Your answer is intervals. You can get a lot more done in very little time. Start with shorter climbs, lets say 200m at 7%. Ride that hill 4-6 times at 80% max HR. If you get interval 3 and get up that hill on or under 80%, stop and go home, your done for the day. Make sure that you recover in full between the intervals, HR below 50% of max. And VERY VERY important, is recovery after training. Its almost more important than the training itself. I can write a book about all of this. But rather, send me PM and will give you lot more detailed info and also help you with training program, exercises and nutritional tips. And no I'm not gonna charge you. I share my knowledge for the love of the sport. A lot of my friends have made massive improvements using my training techniques. Myself, in my 14months of mtb'ing I have managed to get in the top 10% of all of almost all the races I'm competing in. And Ive had some bad luck with crashes keeping me off the bike for 8weeks and 6 weeks respectively. Best result is 2nd in vori berg 30km and 3rd place at vori berg 60km. Im now aiming for top 5% position for the rest of the year. PM me if you want to know more.
  5. thx for the feedback guys. We are doing repeated hill training on the climbs going to pofadder route. After pofadder we're riding all the way to and over breedtsnek and then back to the garage near breddts where my wife will pick us up. So a tuff days training lying ahead, if the weather permits.
  6. What time does van Gaalens gates open currently?
  7. thx for the feedback guys. The 24hr race is actually this weekend in parys. Its the Ride Magazine Eastern Skies 24hr race. I ususally eat some bananas before and after a race and also like to eat some skippy from the tub. "No skippy no cycling". Someone also told me that black cat peanut bars does wonders. Will give that a try as well. Only want touse the supplement drinks during the riding and for quick breaks in between.
  8. What are you opinions regarding the best supplment drink to use before and during a 24hr mtb race. Something that will keep the legs going. In terms of energy I currently use 32GI which works great for me. But it doesnt do a lot for recovery. Was thinking of something like USn epic pro in addition to 32GI.
  9. that is massively impressive!!

Listing will be free and you will receive a lot of exposure. If you want to know more about the web site, you can also PM me. Thanks
  19. Thats already built in. The trails or MTB destination as we call it will have detailed info on accommodation (and rates where possible), activities, GPS co-ordinates, map to get there. We will also have video clips and or pictures of the actual venues itself. Together with that we will write a short review of each venue and its trails and rate it. Members will be able to comment on each listing and also rate the listings. I appreciate all suggestions, please keep them coming.
