  1. Decided to join a Night ride with the group last night. Really looked forward to a nice 50-60km on a warm beautiful night. Pre ride discussion as normal - Talk of the past rides where people got dropped and left alone to find their own way. So, the Rules are restated - Stay in a group, look after slower riders, stop at traffic lights blah blah blah. Front guys start at warm pace going uphill, so I burn it to the front not to get dropped by the rubber band (and to try keep pace down) Robot = RED - but no problem everybody jumps the light - but I wait and then race like crazy to catch the group again, joined the group and went to the front, - another Robot a few minutes later = RED - no problem -again only me waiting for the light ! This is just after 6pm - lots of traffic - Durbanville road. Don't these selfish idiots see that the public notice the group, flashing lights and all, as they jump the lights - So, more angry motorists. I turned off at the next road - I refuse to ride with a bunch of brainless sheep. The attitude is;... Its a Red Light - so what ? The front guy jumped the light so I must follow ! I am on a bike, 'waiting' is for these morons in their cars ! Stuff these inconvenient Robots - everyone can see I am important ! I am training ! I am training ! you idiots I can't stop and start like this ! Sh!t, the guys are jumping the red light - I have no b@lls - I won't object ! What ? single file ? these cars can just wait, impatient b@stards - I will drop them at the red light ! Its the law ? - F^ck the Law man - I am training ! Motorist are unhappy ? But Can't they see I am important ?! - I am not a fat slob in a car ! I guess the shop is happy that this group rides under their name.
  2. its a anagram for Poepol ?
  3. mmmmm......Most of us know our times (from our cycle computers) - so no, I won't phone for my time. What I normally find more useful is to see the times of the all the other riders - to see how I and others compare. So, very POOR show on this event !
  4. My 2c As far as comparing 29er to 26 in terms of speed, efficiency etc can't be done on opinions or speed over a piece of terrain. Sometimes you go faster, sometimes slower - the limited time difference is not scientific enough and opinions differ, are personal, and will change from one day to the next. Some guru will have to do scientific comparison - and then ? we know it will say the 26 is good for this and the 29 good for that. I have a hard tail 26 which I use more for the flat road trips, non-technical night rides etc. Once tried the Crater Cruise on a HT ....so much friggin corrugation on the dirt roads (most of the race)your ass, teeth, liver and cerebellum shiver and shake to destruction. So, the hard tail now mainly retired to use for shopping trips, mail collection, gym visits. I have a 26 dual sus super light carbon bike - that is a pleasure to ride anywhere ! but hammers your legs on rocky sections, specially if they are on a uphill where rocks try to stop you on every second pedal stroke. I am also starting to get a bit older and bored with breaking so many ribs and nursing so many roasties. On really technical stuff it is light and easy to maneuver but can get a lot more scary compared to the larger 29 wheels. I have a full sus 29er - and its heaven ! Sure it weighs more than the duel sus 26er, but I don't worry about rocks and holes and bushes - I go flat out and if I lose the line , so what, I just go over the bush and rock and hole and join the trail again as soon as I can. Sure 3 inches higher to fall - but I have not come so close or often to falling as I did on the tiny 26 wheels. The 26 was nice to bunny hop roots and sh!t, but don't need to on the 29er - just bully it over. So 3inches higher to fall - so what, it just doesn't happen that often anymore and besides, I look forward to the longer air time and higher better view of the new flight path ! I would recommend a duel sus 29er to anyone looking to buy a new bike.
  5. Oh...helmets are so yesterday ... get the head airbag ! http://www.gizmag.com/hvding-airbag-collar/16715/
  6. Guys - before you get too excited with your bids - NOTE - it is a XXXL
  7. Has this @#$%'er been caught yet ? I have been riding Meerendal during the day - not excited about being surprized by the f####ER in Majik. Received this in my newsletter a week or so ago. This is the face of the Majik Forest attacker, Jason Booysen. If you see him, do not approach, ring 10111 immediately. If you have seen him before, please email me with the information; where, and when. We are getting closer to finding him, so any info, no matter how much of along shot it seems, is welcome. The sooner we find him the sooner it will be safer in the Forest.
  8. you snooze - you lose he he he
  9. Hi - sent you a PM I would like the entry and will refund. thanks
  10. Entry wanted for the 50km please if anyone has available
  11. Link to wheel table - with rider weight limits; http://www.amclassic.com/documents/2011-Wheel-Chart.pdf
  12. Everything will eventually seize if neglected - Always place a little grease on the thread before screwing in the pedals, BB, seat-post bolt, cranks, bottle cage bolts, stem bolts, all bolts.. then, yes, it is already tight enough ! giving it just another little bit is going to strip it.
  13. You must be more specific in your description. I found these on the route (As you can see I tried only two of them on already) Hope they fit you better than me !
  14. fantastic ride this (50km) - lots of up and down - and not very technical. Make sure your granny gear and brakes work. Starts off going into / past the vineyards and then into the mountains/hills. Lots of forest roads and long steady hills - with fresh cool water running down some corners and a muddy patch or two as found in most forest rides. Gonna love it, but don't underestimate it.
  15. mmm.. can't recall noticing the cop shop - but that makes me feel even worse - It should be easy for them to just keep an eye on that 200m stretch
  16. Thanks IFT-Force - heard of so many who got mugged there (and have a friend who lost an eye after being hit with a brick at the same place !) - but one always thinks it can't happen to you because you will be there at a sensible daylight time with traffic etc etc. This one was too close ! thanks for the concern.
  17. 11.30 today - on my MTB - I had decided not to cut over the mountain from Bottelary to Stellenbosch (at the golf course), but rather to go down the R304 to Stellenbosch - and to risk passing Kayamandi. It was after all midday on Wednesday, it is the main road into town and tons of traffic on the route. As I got next to kayam. two guys crossed the road over to my side. I could see from their body language that something was up. The one guy was scratching his face and not sure where to look while the other was giving me a look over. I quickly looked behind me to see if their was any traffic coming up on my side - noticed there was nothing in sight. So, now almost on top of the guys I steered towards them. Just as I was a meter before the one, he jumped forward and hit me in the side. I am not sure if he was actually trying to hit me, push me or grab my camelback shoulder strap to pull me off. Anyway, having checked for traffic before hand, as soon as I saw his arm coming up, I accelerated and made a sharp swerve away from them into the road, which caught the guy off balance and limited the contact he made with me. Two seconds later I was past them. I looked back and they were standing looking at me. By now the adrenaline kicked in. What to do ? Stop and phone the cops ? (how long before they arrive and was I safe hanging around ?) So I just carried on as if nothing had happened (the adrenaline made the next 20km very easy going) What must we do ? I took my mace/pepper spray into my hand when I saw the two guys coming up, but I was going into a strong South Easter - and realized it will probably do no good. As it turned out, it all happened so fast, I did not even consider the spray and while swerving I did not let go of the handle bars. If I had, his bump would have been sufficient to knock me clear of my bike. The Pepper spray would have been useless - but what can we do ? Carry a gun ? Even if I had one, I would probably only been able to use it once I was off the bike - but then what - just shoot the F@#$%rs ? Does this mean that we just can't use the big main road that goes into Stellenbosch ! ? How can we have the right to use a main road taken away from us ! I am so p!ssed off !!!! - and further, the option is to continue on Kromme Rhee road and then via Remhoogte which also passes a suspect low income housing section into Stellenbosch ! (only a matter of time before this hooliganism starts there as well. Mad ! mad ! mad ! - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!! ps. Did you know - the name Kayamandi means "sweet home”, (alluding to the bitter irony that 65% of the population of 20 000 lives in hacks) - and it was almost home to my Scott. Be careful out there !!
  18. he he he ...You guys are so gullible - Does that really look as if its "next to" the road ? Could anybody have a claim for riding somewhere off road or "next to the road" ...nogal from the "Road" Accident fund - Have you heard of the "Next to the Road Fund" ? Don't you think it's a bit of a strange post/question. Nice one.
  19. WTF... you have riches !!! You wanna be a sugar-mama for one of us young hubers ?
  20. MTB ARGUS ENTRY Wanted - 32km or 52km Please PM me.
  21. Get UST tyres ! if you shopping anyway - it is worth it - better side walls and better tubeless (on normal rim)conversion (en, ja, daas nie pille vir stooopid nie, sorry)
  22. Every year the 99er fee gets my goat. I decided not to place on forum till after the ride - because comments will just be 'don't ride' But what is it that makes us do it ? No other rides this weekend ? Goody bag compensates for high fees ? The water/drink tables are ....well, just water/drink tables - no major difference ? Winners get good prize money - but why must I pay for more and more prize money - I won't win or enjoy the ride more ? Lucky draw prize - only one person wins the big prize (normal probability not you/me) ? and at most events hardly anyone sits around for two hours waiting for the prize giving ? Money going to a good cause ? Same with all rides - fees mostly to charities etc.? Most riders complain that generally fun ride fees are high - and if you do them regularly, the fuel, entry, etc etc ads up. So, why go the the most expensive event ? We enjoy the event - Of Course we do - but is it R 100-180 more fun than another ride ? I have read their excuse of why the are so expensive, but am not convinced that the fee is justified. Routes are the same as used by PPA and other - so marshall cost could be the same etc. What was in your goody bag - do you think it makes up for the extra fees ? Comparison of event fees: PPA mostly, early entry, member : R 70 or the non-member R 100 99 er , early member entry fee : R 170 or the non-member R 190 PPA mostly late entry fees member :R 100 or non-member R 120 99 er , late entry fee member :R 280 ....... R 280 Similar differences for the MTB events. So, when will you stop going to an event; This one cost mainly R 170 to 280 Will you still go at R 200, 300, 400, 500 ? Do we care - do we have b@lls to boycott - do we think like consumers ? What does your non-riding wife, partner, hubby etc think - fair to spend this money to ride a public road ? Not being negative here guys - just trying to think why we do it, are we making cycling easier to start for those less wealthy than us, are these fees discriminating against...and basically just not reasonable ?
  23. or you can buy the stans rim strips - I find they work better than bmx tube - The problem comes when you have a major tyre/flat fix in the middle of nowhere - then the bomb must work first time - or you walk
