  1. Sounds interesting. How did you get onto the mailing list ?
  2. TEAM RABOBANK has a secret: During the Tour de France, there has been something unusual splashing around in their drink bottles Jeukendrup's hydration recipe ½ cup maltodextrin 6 ½ tsp fructose ¼-½ tsp table salt Combine in one liter of water, shake, and serve! I do however think the GI32 guys have a good idea. Just not sure how to get it to work for me. A low GI if it can (and appears to do so for some guys) must be the healthier option. I have tried two tubs and could not find a mixture that does not make me feel bloated and nauseous. But I just love the concept.... So, rather than just the malotodex/fructose as per most drinks...I would like to see more research and recipes for low GI products.
  3. Interesting to see the preference for a 'flask' of gel. I am always concern I might over do the carbs late in a ride/race (+dehydrated=crams) so worried that I will suck-up too much from a flask. How do you control your use ? and how much do those small plastic flasks hold ? (apologies..just realised this is a bit of a hijack)
  4. yup - this was stupid - down the front of Ou Kaapse weg
  5. how many of us ran off to see what our clocks say ? I sure did. My road and mtb bike clocks showed 16,008 and 40,795 Can't recall when I last changed batteries and I know I moved my road clock to my mtb (which never had one) when I bought a wireless clock for the road. But I looked in my polar heart rate diary ...fantastic tool ... you can run reports on many aspects. So, with the combination I extracted the following summary; Total km 56,803 Road km 45,576 MTB km 11,227 Hrs total 2,428.97 Road hr 1,749.27 MTB hr 679.70 kcal total 977,956 Rd kcal 758,761 MTB kcal 219,195 meter ascent 185,326 Rd ascent 151,834 MTB ascent 33,492 mx spd 112 this appears to be almost 4 yrs. rather a fun exercise...pity fitness is like trying to hold water in your hands...you just gotta keep going or it just disappears..damn
  6. ....AND a tub with an opening large enough so I can actually get my hand IN to scoop out the sh!t !!
  7. djeeees guys, thanks for all the feedback. I take the point that my OP perhaps could have used more diplomatic language....but it was sincere... Very interesting the data given on bearing C3 etc quality etc. but sounds as if it is generally agreed that shopping around for "Generic" parts will give one cables, bearings, etc that are perfectly good enough (?) for our purpose. I can also mention that this episode actually started about a month earlier when I asked a local LBS to check the wheel for me due to a 'shudder' I had on hard braking . I thought it was caused by disc brake pads...sanded them clean...no difference.....replaced them with new softer pads....no difference.....removed, cleaned, the disk and its fittings.....no difference.... Then decided the small amount of play in the bearings combined with the off-set effect of the brake pad on the brake disc may be to blame.... So, in desparation decided it was out of my knowledge/skill range and took the bike to the LBS. Explained the whole story and process and they agreed to investigate. Bottom line is when I fetched the bike, they had replaced the pads (again!) and said they had 'tightened the cones for me' ! As I of course knew these wheels did not have the old cone and axles set-up, and I told them I had replaced the pads myself (bought from them !) I just flipped my lid, paid the fee and walked out.... These then were the bearings I decided to remove and check... found rusty water... and this whole saga per my original OP began... So, sometimes Sh!t prices, other times Sh!t service. Oh boy how I miss the old Willy Engelbrecht shop - I knew I paid a little more (2 or 3 hundred on a bike).....but the after sales service, freebees, personal interest shown and quality was always more than worth the little premium I paid on my bikes, new wheels etc. [Note to self - gotta go find their webike shop and see if the quality continued !]
  8. Yup MuXmAn ... I get your point thanks. However, its not as if I sneaked over here to bad mouth them. When told the price, as mentioned, I said to the sales person that it was an excessive price and therefore I prefer to do my shopping for these parts at a generic part supplier. It is not a sin to make a profit...but when anyone does feel happy with a price they look somewhere else. My post gives a look at my experience ... (of which CL was informed) A suitable CL response could have been something like....'sorry but we cater for someone in a higher income bracket'.....or, 'yes that does sound excessive, lets have a look and make a deal'....or...'sorry, that is the price because we only use the original imported parts, but you can get a generic part at....'....or 'yes, its expensive but the guarantee depends on the original parts from Scott'......or 'no we don't stock spares for that bicycle but we can get them and it will be expensive, better you go to....'.....or So, my post is not a ps on the CL battery....it was a question....are all LBS charging these mark-ups on spares ? Anyway..(yawn)....this is all getting too carried away. ((And yes I also get grumpy and sometimes reply with sh!ty comments on other hubbers posts :-)
  9. Sorry Big H but I don't get your point ? but it sounds as if you are suggesting I treated CL badly ? I made a simple statement saying I think CL had excellent Service, but overcharge on their spares. Now I get the impression its 'bash the Lizard' time in the follow-up posts ? Why the attack on poor me ?
  10. You @#$%^.... Read the mail, I did go buy/source my own - BUT its a bicycle part...so I did go to the bicycle shops first - They sell the bikes - they should be the best source for the spares ? ! for the brands they sell ! now do you get it !
  11. Serviced my wheels today and decided new bearings required. Tried all the local shops but nobody had the bearings (For Mavic Crossmax mtb wheels) Cyclelab had excellent service in that a pretty girl (that's always a good start!) met me at the door - asked what she can help with and then proceeded to see if they had the bearing. (other shops just said they don't have it - so 1 up for cyclelab) They did not have but she said she will phone around and see how soon she can get one. (2nd good point for CLab.) Finally she said she can get them for me - at R 220 each. After I picked myself up off the floor - I said cool bananas but I will go to the bearing shop myself thanks. Went to BMG - asked for the best bearing in that size - and paid R 70 per bearing. R 220 each VS. R 70 each ? So saving R660-R210 = R 450 ! by 20 minute drive. mmmmm..... service was (and also on previous occasions) very good, BUT the girl was not so pretty that I will pay that price .....or go back soon.
  12. Eish.... Anybody bother to read all this cr@p...? ! Dude , just say smoking is a K@K idea ... short and sweet like, you know !
  13. pppfff.... I don't even get up before 5 PM !
  14. Very nice frame and wheels - Maybe just contact Tyrone (see pimp your bike thread) and get some Scott stickers to make it a bit more respectable.
  15. GET A LIFE PPL ! WHO CARES WHAT SIZE YOUR FEET ARE !! (just be aware that woman know that the size of your foot is an indication of the size of your salami) This is a Rant and Rave column ! - not a foot fetish floozy get together ! he he he
  16. oh just get over it dick head ! Its not what name they give you, its about how you use it !
  17. If you are very certain you know exactly who it was... and that you are sure you caught the same person later in the race.. that you do not have any other witness... that is was a substantial race ..i.e. prize money.. that there were other rides who were disadvantaged.. that this podium finisher has gained status,.... Then the only way to maintain your moral values, to not sit and wonder what the right thing is to do, and to get closure for the benefit of your soul, is to black-mail that bitch.
  18. Ja, specially those okes who are "uneductaed" ?
  19. To just compare the Road bike and MTB on tar road does not give enough data A Road wheel is also larger that mtb so rolling resistance is further reduced. And regarding the speed of the upper part of the wheel to the lower part - that is why the bottom of the wheel stands still when you are not riding even if the wind speed is 80km/h (i.e. if it did not stand still and the road stands still - it would drag ! right) So at 80 km/h the bottom of the wheel must stand still, but the top part of the wheel must catch up so it will turn at 160 in the opposite direction. Mathematically - if the top of the wheel speed is 'x' and the bottom of the wheel is 'y', the hub speed is 'r' and the road speed is 'z'. then given that y = z and e=mc2 (where r/^y*x) Where the wind is 'q' then (x/y - q2)(8^2/7@3) That is why in a 50km/h head wind you have to do 50 km/h just to stand still !! I will do Majik forest and Hillcrest this weekend with my road scotty and let you know if this also works off road.
  20. Message from Clinic ...DEAR MDK 55 Doc has replied:- ...WTF ? ! ......my hands were so slippery with the blood and sh!t ...I knew I dropped my bike lock Key somewhere.... Please return asap
  21. Never ask JB if it is true that you must spoke your front wheel with a left hand spoke overlap to reduce the rolling resistance of the rim. That has already been proven.
  22. On the hub the rules ? Like that Moses guy said in the big hub book verse 3;14 ; “Do unto others before them does turn you to a pillar of salt, for when you insult their opinion you will be killed with the jaw bone of the lion” and rule 1 - no 'poefters' (you tjop) rule 2 - see rule 1 rule 3 - don't mention that superstition thing wih the sling-shot war and all - there are guys here who will k@k on you
  23. I agree with the idea of a slower group but not less distance. As mentioned before - we can handle the distance but the race snakes kill us on pace. Wednesday - it was a tail wind and downhill all the way to silos - so of course all feel strong and go like hell - but the return into the wind - and those bl@@dy hills at full speed - eish. We were going to make our own night group after wednesday - but from other replies - it appears a slower group is required by a few others too - so it would be great if we could get this working better. My views on the Group ride We have many riders who want the distance but not the elite race pace. [With no race snakes, somebody still needs to do the up- front work (into wind etc.) and if the riders are 99% wannabes and wheel suckers the group goes super slow – i.e. they must really be fit enough] It appears that there may be a shorter time/distance requirement for some newbie / limit time riders / etc. So, we need 3 groups. [how/can organizers manage 3 groups re routes/backup vehicle?] It is a problem when the 1 group joins or waits for the other - i.e. join slower with faster riders - because they all take off at full speed again - dropping the slower guys - and instead of two groups we have chaos murder death kill. [how do we stop riders joining another group – i.e. slower trying to hang on to another group?] There are always guys who are in the race snake category who go ride in a slower group and push the pace too hard (!@#$%)– and worse, splits up the group too much and in the second half of the ride they just do their own thing and ride away from the others - some guys desperately hang on but eventually it’s a long split group with murder death kill at the tail end. [How do we keep these snsofbtchs in control ?] If the groups start only 15 min apart they catch the earlier group too soon. [Probably not practical to split the depart times further – not many can start earlier than 6 pm (it’s a race from work to ride location) – and will the race snakes start later – say 7pm ? [Get home too late, wife, girlfriend, anger, your food is ‘in the dog’, murder death kill.] It is too problematic to try and arrange the times so that all the groups rejoin at a point along the route – the split times are too short. [let’s forget deliberately trying to join along the route] Cyclists think only of themselves. They don’t like rules and being told when to wait, when to slow down, when to work in a group. [All who want to join in the Wednesday rides must be told it is on condition that they are team players – not individuals who do their own thing. The organizers go to great trouble and sacrifice to assist with their safety and support. If they don’t follow the group rules they are not welcome to join in. Example: - if they break a chain, nobody helps or waits and they get mugged or run over on their walk home they will want to accuse the organizers. If you want to join the group, you join the rules.] So, the suggestion:- (although I am documenting it, my impression is that this is basically along the original ideas and thoughts of the organizer – the Big C himself ) Before the start (and in web rides notifications) • All Riders must know that they individually have a group commitment if they want to join the Wednesday parade. • If riders are not prepared to ride by the rules, they are not welcome. • If they find they are in the wrong group (example too slow for them) they can work more into the wind and ….Tough Sh!t, they can change next week. The Groups 6 .00 pm “Short Snort” - 25/30 km for “novice or time limited” riders 6.15 pm – “Determined Donners” - 40/50+ km for slower “iron baldies with boeps” and so on. 6.30 pm “Race Snakes” - 40/50+ km for the “main manne what counts” AND the Group Control (1) A Group Captain must be appointed for each group. The group Captain (and helper if available) will basically:- • Wear a clear ‘marker’ – best would be a “neon safety vest” over their cycle top. • Identify himself to the group before start. • Brief group on their commitment (to stay together), route and pace • Be responsible to keep the group together. • Set the general pace • Tell riders were to regroup (i.e. if some race up / down hills etc.) • Wait for the group at intervals/regroup points, and confirms all present. • Monitor (slows pace) when guys fall behind at stops/traffic lights etc. AND (2) Groups must be kept Separate• Groups must not stop at the same place at the same time • If another group catches up – they must pass – no riders swopping groups. Phew !....
  24. Chris, I think you should edit this mail 'heading' - I keep thinking it relates to the 23 June ( ? ) Hope weather is gonna be good - looks blerrie cold and chance of rain :-( ps. further - its the 'not so strong and fast' guys that do the 18:15 - some are fit enough but can't keep up with the too young or too strong serious manne !
  25. Did I mention that when I went to help the guy and asked what happened.. he tried communicating....by writing something....in his blood on the road....could not made it out but it was just one word....looked sos or bos ?......
