  1. It was firstly not intended to provide a voice for unhappy people but rather provide info on how the winter rains and possible landslides could affect the residents living on the border of the park. The shop found a way to turn it into a channel for expressing disdain for the closure. You do recall Trail and Tar, specifically Noel, was found ignoring the advice of the Park management and the informal agreement with TokaiMTB to keep running groups of 20+ runners off the mountain bike specific singletrack in Tokai? Well, the connection is to take an invitation welcoming interested people to a talk about the need for closure, plans to rehab and threats to residents and turn it into a campaign in a show of force to call on all users to "voice your opinion about how badly this whole thing has been handled." The property owners assoc got wind of this call and promptly retracted the open invitation. That says to me that they were not intending the talk to be steered in the direction the local business was willing it. i.e. dissatisfaction. It's really simple, head too far up arse or not simple.
  2. ..when Paddy Gordon is out of town.
  3. Still can't get over this crap attitude.. and to still accentuate the last line in red shows TnT's intensions.. Looks very much like he wants the riders to do his bidding. Anyway, unless you are part o the ZAPO assoc, or an invited TRA member, the meeting is not open to you to derail.. See TnT FB page for update from the ZAPO board. (Edit: Sorry Dave, speaking generally not meaning you personally.)
  4. .. and still buzzing. (PS Folder shared and issues uploaded. Will be editing for some time still. Document structured to populate with info)
  5. You're right, the literally hundreds of hours applied by mountain bike reps is starting to bear fruit. It is of course still a trial and this is where you can play your part.
  6. Um, can't say it any other way, they are taking out all the trees, everything is usable. Of course they are still working to a plan so will work from top down/or down up.. what ever it is. Possibly with all the extra teams they may even work from left to right??
  7. All the timber would still be healthy. It will take several months before the trees are unusable but even then, CP are still held to the contract to clear the pine - although the urgency would be reduced which won't work in our favour.
  8. Several loads of Pine leaves each day. Routes are via Baden Powell or N2 headed out to Stellenbosch depot. Last truck exits at sundown and work continues over weekends and public holidays. A significant portion of levels 4 and 5 have been cleared, and as you say, the Orpen rd blocks are also being felled. I could be mistaken but I was sure a load turning onto the N2 yesterday was gum..
  9. Can we all agree that they should just start at 650b? May save us a fortune as end users.. Besides, I don't think I could go through another set of wheel size debates again..
  10. Sorry, did you just put up your hand to be the first recruit in, "final horse approach 101"? On second thought, I doubt anyone will be able to unlearn that level of wrong, ever.
  11. Indeed, the last 7 years in Tokai is proof of shared jeep track and how this came to being is through the horses making use of mountain bike designated areas. I see on the latest draft map the local horse group has put together shows all the JT in the mountain bike side open for use. Hopeful about coexisting. Just a bit of education around how to approach horses and we are set.
  12. Gosh, I dunno. Cape Town would stand to lose, Alan Winde likes the idea of having it.
  13. The closure is not my opinion.. I see you question that.
  14. there are no hard feelings, I can perfectly understand why everyone wants to find fault with Parks. They control the areas we can ride and the process of getting new trails is slow. It's like the aliens being used as fodder for the cause of proving Cape Nature are better suited to run this Park... Can you imagine if everything had to start again?? Better the devil you know I say!
  15. You want to contact SANBI. 120 years of rotational forestry not giving seed bank a chance to germinate.Fire not in the area for this duration to stimulate the process needed and remove competition.Seedbank in other areas hybridised with other species.Upper slopes not the main conservation effort, lower Tokai success critical with upper slopes emphasis on creating a biodiversity corridor.General summary. The "finger" into the suburbs in lower Tokai does not exist in places where the Sandveld species grow or conservation a possibility making this one of the last possible conservation areas where they can find success. The corridor is vital to the rest of the conservation mandate of this being a world heritage site and keeping the status.
  16. Ok, so here's where we get a bit sensitive.. pun intended. There was someone who was not satisfied with the burn protocol of Table Mountain National Park so sought his confirmation from a prolific and sometimes rebellious in character scientist. This guy walked around showing anyone interested the email its contents to prove his point - Valid email or not, that's not my point. So skip ahead to the fire and the timeframe we all rebuke as non-sensical, especially when compared to other areas. The fires were still burning when a low-level report surfaced claiming the area would need 18-24 months in rehab, requiring Tokai to be closed to public access for the duration. It doesn't take a rocket-scientist to work out that Table Mountain National Park is honouring the timeframe of this report, as it is deemed best by the man leading the project for the conservation of the area. I doubt Table Mountain National Park are forced into this timeframe either but considering the opportunity around closure for the pine removal, 18mnths may well be an accurate stab. With the pines all being extracted in one year, the wide scale fire now lessens the burden of an ecoburn and Table Mountain National Park every year being critised by the public and others, around their ineptitude to conduct controlled fires. Oddly, the guy backing the email is now also in the boat questioning why the timeframe is required, showing yet again that there are two sides to everything we wish for.
  17. We continue to look at the closure from one side, specifically how we are displaced and inconvenienced for it. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on it but there are just quick thoughts about what we all want, but how to get it based on our history. What could anyone offer as reassurance to Table Mountain National Park that riders/walkers/horse riders will remain in designated areas and on designated trails? How long could you guarantee it?What happens when your word cannot be kept by, let's say 5 people who continue to evade rangers?Does Table Mountain National Park now have to redirect their efforts to controlling 3 usergroups? What do you think the feeling would be at the table when the committee meets to discuss more trails? Just questions. They don't need answering but at the least consider our past.
  18. Nor do I. Assuming we could manage ourselves I would say it was the worst decision ever.
  19. I posted the new dates for the Park Planning info session here. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/148925-2015-tmnp-park-planning-info-session/
  20. It is the 1st of April, so there's that too. But DJR is right. What does Table Mountain National Park really need to give us if we behave like idiots on the mountain.. more? The same sentiment was expressed around all of Tokai's illegal tracks. Guess none saw the area being closed as a reality.. now the reps are being told to go and demand access sooner. Your hand was shown then, be ready for distrust now. Simple.
  21. No, they are offering your money back to ride elsewhere if you don't want to remain in the areas designated for riding. No one has asked you to stop riding your bike. As the Dirtypot says, what you choose to do in your desperation has an impact on others. What's next, legalise copper theft because money is tight?
  22. Apologies are not really needed, what I see is just fact. The plan is spot on, execution is the sticking point. As you said, it's a debate but unfortunately there ain't no shying away from the ugly stuff. You really do have my support, as well as everyone else who wants the same. Just the fact that you replied with a reasonable response shows you are not afraid to head into a part of the topic that most would rather block out or ignore. On the one side there are guys that are willing to look at our situation holistically and others who look only for issues and use it as fuel in whatever suits an argument. You are showing that you can handle the red pill, something that those focussed on the solution greatly appreciate! TBH, if it was not for your posts, I would not have seen the point of giving you my honest reply. It is hugely frustrating. Just one look at what is happening in the North now shows that signs and years of effort means nothing to some.
  23. Tubed. You pay a lot of attention to signage and prosecution. You would almost be saying the the mtb'er can't be trusted and for those who still don't respond to penalty, should face a sentence tougher than law. Then you go on to say that you only want to share wide jeep track where we can build on relationships with all users. You, in the space of one paragraph, now trust the mtb'er to grant you your wish? Maybe today you will get 100 likes and 50 shares. wishlists generate a lot of enthusiasm.. From placing a sign at every entry, exit, intersection, and with several reminders along the way warning of penalty for not obeying the rules in existence since 2002 - to the warm and fuzzies by accepting second best with the hope of building relationships by the same group for which every sign is intended, is quite a leap of faith that after a year your signs are still respected and that new trails have not popped up along the way. The reality is that this is all currently underway but at every point and turn in the road, there is always someone who cannot apply even the slightest bit of restraint when trying to "convert" the other users - like swearing at a 72 year old lady and showing her the finger in your branded cycling kit. (I met her btw). Or screaming inches passed a group of walkers with children (I met them too). Or building illegally because your 'only sharing' status sets a precedent for another lengthy timeframe before money is raised and an opportunity is available to us again. (How long should be be prepared to share?) You could be forgiven for think everyone will respect your campaign in a year because today, on paper, it looks fantastic and for that I will like your two posts above. OR, are you saying that every mtb'er should now try a new shift in thinking and respect the wishes of those working to make reality what you propose? Let's hope you have better luck or maybe the circumstance is now prime with all the closures for each to finally "give it a go". You have my support!
  24. Chapman's Peak tolling concessionaire must have all fingers crossed the nets are enough. Apart from the obvious lack of vegetation, the rocks that have cracked as a result of expansion must be quite a worry. Last thing they need is for the nets to be silted up after the first rain.
