  1. *Disclaimer, this is a completely subjective matter so treat it as such. I'll have my flame suit at the ready however just in case* Why is it that 99.9% of cycling glasses and helmets are designed to be as gaudy and dorky as possible? Is there some functional benefit or is it just that having cycling-specific stuff is a way of being identified as a cyclist? I mean, I'm sure those are super comfortable, and I'm not trying to offend you in any way, as a new cyclist its just something I'm struggling to get to grips with.
  2. Then you wouldn't have had that sweet sweet S-works badge adorning your steed. Also, Carbon > all other materials
  3. Good lawd that sleek integrated stem looks good. Not so sure about the '90s wheels, but who am I to judge. I've also just realised that cycling is probably the only sport/hobby where you pay more the flimsier something gets.
  4. It literally has a broomstick for a handlebar... "Dis nou 'n klomp yuppie ***", like my daddy used to say.
  5. @'Dale Thus the reason my kit is completely black. Its slimming, doll.
  6. Jirre, not what you'd call subtle... At least they double as safety gear for night rides.
  7. Sounds like a plan. I'm assuming there's a separate group doing a recce ride of the 58km as well? Please let me know if there's a WhatsApp group I can join or how I can get hold of the arrangements. Thanks!
  8. I may be keen to join the ride on the 15th, depending on the pace. I'm busy training for the 947 and still have some ways to go (only started cycling in July), but getting a 110km under my belt would be great prep. If there was someone in the slower group, what was the average speed for the previous ride in August?
  9. Whoooo made it through the 55km. I was riding with my brother in law who has not spent much time in the saddle and 0 training time, so ended up with a 3h43 (4h08 total time). He took serious punishment from the first checkpoint onwards so I was basically having a leisurely ride for most of the race. I'm sure I could have managed a 3hr ride if I went at my pace. It must sound stupid to the 2hr racing snakes, but I felt pretth proud that I still felt fresh at the end. 2 months ago I would have died 20km in. Track was very cool. Also my first time riding there. Lots of fun techy sections and variety. I was however pretty disappointed in some aspects. The checkpoints had no food whatsoever which I was relying on, there was no finish line announcer, no medals, nada. Definitely returning to BRB soon though!
  10. Got mine. Good luck to all, especially those in the "Kaas-en-Wyn Span" D group with me.
  11. We aren't going to win, we're just going to finish. I did the winter fast one 40km in 2h23 wiyhout murdering myself or being too stiff the next day, and I've done some training in the meantime. The only thing really worrying me is the fact that I travelled the last week. Going to do some longer interval training rides tomorrow and Thursday and hope for the best! Any info available on water point locations/distances?
  12. Jusg registered for the 55km. I'll see you all there. I think I'm going to take a beating as it'll be my first trio to BRB and he furthest I've ever ridden by 15km.
  13. How are the entry numbers looking?
  14. Thanks man. Seems like the route is a little more entertaining than th Winter Fast One route, which was a lot of straight shot pedalling. My wife surprised the hell out of me and said she wanted to enter the 10km with my daughter in the carrier, so it seems I'm buying two tickets! Unfortunately I'm out of country for the week and a half before the race again, but hey, just adds to the challenge!
  15. Looking at entering the 55km race. Any chance we could get a route map or guide? I haven't ridden BRB yet and would like to get an idea of elevation and technicality.
  16. Nice pic! That wind made the 300m elevation feel like 1300m elevation in some places. I think the 70km guys skipped it, but us 40km guys got to pedal through a burnt, flooded mielie field marsh. It was like tar.
  17. I'd have a piece of that action. Can you PM me some more details or point me in the direction of the appropriate thread/WhatsApp group? Thanks.
  18. How technical are the routes, or are they predominantly jeep track / gravel roads? Any idea of elevation gain or a route profile? I'm looking at maybe entering the 60km race.
  19. So I made it! Whoooo! It was relatively smooth sailing until the last 5km, the bumpy grass demolished my backside. Now I know why so many people ride FS and not HT! While this was my first race so I don't have any comparisons, it was well organized, well marked, and had a very fun vibe! The OBs/banana/potato combo at the first stop did the trick!
  20. Entered as well. Diving into the deep end always works out well.... right? I'll see you all in 13 days.
  21. Thanks for the feedback. This park is ~5min away from my office, so I'll be looking at doing a few after-work rides there on Fridays with some friends. Are there any jumps or features or is it aligned more towards XC/Trail riding?
  22. They're entered into the 40km race, and if its only 70m I'll attempt it. If you see a pudgy dude lying on his side astride a black Silverback Sola 4 on the route, wheezing and panting, you'll know you've passed me. Be a peach and throw a banana/redbull/beer my way would you?
  23. I have two buddies that are already entered for this, considering joining in even though I just started riding two weeks ago. Did a 12km ride with 265m elevation gain yesterday and feeling 100% today, so maybe I should attempt it? Any idea on how rough the gradients are?
  24. Ahoy all. I'm a soon-to-be mountain biker, just joined the forum. I rode MotoX and BMX bikes in high school, both of which stopped when I got my first car and my first university registration fee. I've had a serious itch to get back into MotoX, but I don't have the money or the space for a bike and a trailer. That, combined with the fact that I'm much closer to the horrifying 30 year old / 100kg threshold than I'd like to be and need something my significant other and 2 year old can join me in has steered me toward mountain biking. SARS is buying me my first bike in July, so looking at doing some road cycling and trials riding for exercise/fun and some dirt trails. Stay in Boksburg, so there are a bunch of options in a 50km radius. Thanks!
