    DIY Frame Build

Not sure where to post this but seeing as though it would be aimed and enduro type riding i will post it here... Anybody perhaps got experience with building there own bike frames? Been playing around with some design ideas when i have some free time at work to build a frame. Have come up with something like this... Material would all be 6061 Aluminium. I havent put in all the detail like bolts, bearings etc. Just the basic frame geometry I have qualified TIG welders at work that can do the welding for me and also have some nice CNC machines to get machined parts sorted out too Designed for 150mm travel up front and 26" wheels. Took inspiration from various bike frames that appealed to me and tried to put them all together. Could turn into quite a nice project if it takes off... So lets hear the thoughts and ideas?
  3. Anybody got some experience with these pedals? Have a promising review on BikeRadar and have a nice price tag too... Shimano PD-M530 MTB SPD Trail Pedals http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.com/images/bikes-and-gear/components/pedals/1339421720135-1xa84jpm9idqp-399-80.jpg http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/components/pedals/product/review-shimano-m530-mtb-spd-pedal-12-46284/
  4. Nice Where did you find a place that has stock?
  5. MotoCross accident December 2012... Shattered and dislocated foot 1 week in hospital, then re admited 2 days before christmas for a nother week due to infection. 2 suregeries, 3 months of physio 2 months late for start of new job... flights back and forth to Cape Town to see the surgeon... I still walk like quasimodo and starting to pick up knee problems from the constant limping. Over all hospital bills in excess of R150k all covered... but no price on everything that has come with it and will seemingly still come in the future.
  6. All valid points... of which i am still undecided I am leaning more towards the cleats for now but my only concern with cleats is that i cant get my funny foot unclipped if im going down. Are there any shops in gauteng that stock the shimano AM's or MP's?
  7. Im in two minds. I have always ridden with cleants and feel more comfortable, however after shattering my foot a year ago i am a bit nervous to ride clipped in as i find on my road bike i struggle to get un-clipped at times.
  8. Looking around on buycycle and came across the Shimano AM45 and MP66 at good prices, however cant find much that compares them to the Five-Tens, so any experiences with the two and any comments or suggestions?
  9. What is the sizing like compared to running shoes?
  10. I think all safety gear will have its limit where it isnt designed to work on the severity of the crash or impact it takes and also where it might cause injury else where. I never went onto the motocross track without mine and when i had it on a felt alot more confident in my ability to push abit harder, without it i was hesitant to hit the bigger jumps... that too plays a role in crashing or not - confidence. Case in point 1 - I shattered my navicular into a few pieces and dislocated my 4th and 5th mettatrsal in my right foot when i crashed 13 months ago, i was wearing an R8000 pare of Gaerne mx boots, the severity of the impact went well past what the boots are made for. Case in point 2 - I dont think Trey Canaards neckbrace could have been much help with the severity of this crash... http://www.basherdesigns.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/IMG_30.jpg
  11. I have some experience with my Leatte, granted it was in a motocross accident and not on a bicycle but it saved my neck twice while i was rag-dolling around. I felt it distinctly push against my helmet and stop my neck from going over too far, and i had no bruising or any forther injuries on my shoulders, collarbones or spine. So from experience if i feel i need it on a trail i swear by it, and its dam comfortable when set-up correctly to fit.
  12. Awesome, the Impacts it is then. I have to wear an ankle brace too and they look bulky enough for me to get my foot in with that on. Thanks for all the feedback
  13. Looking at new shoes and cant decide on which ones to go with. Any suggestions and oppinions? Five Ten Impact Low http://dialdbikes.co.za/images/detailed/0/28_402601_1259999874.jpg or Five Ten Freeride VXI http://dialdbikes.co.za/images/detailed/1/13888_5042-freeridervxi-greycharcol-01-web-1361558538.jpg
  14. Anybody got a pair of these? How do they rate comfort wise and do they slip down or stay in place? http://dialdbikes.co.za/images/detailed/0/2012_COMP_KNEE.jpg
  15. Hey guys, looking to get back into MTBing again and have always ridden more AM, Enduro type riding rather than XC. However i do not want to ride alone every weekend, (no fun in eating the dirt with no body to watch and laugh), so is there any AM/enduro riders in the Alberton/ Randvaal area or even gauteng area in general that i could look at joining up with for rides. I know Thaba trails is ideal for AM riding in this area and also parts of Rietvlei. Never ridden the Spruit but keen to try that out and also enjoyed van Gaalens for any guys out that way.
  16. I may also have one. PM me if still looking
  17. Wind is meant to blow harder than this past weekend
  18. Only real climb i know of that can be considered will be in the beginning coming up towards walkerville... otherwise easy sailing the whole route... BUT the head wind on those flat open roads can make you will feel like you climbing even when you going downhill
  19. This is my first road race ever and only doing 54km after only being back in training of any kind for a month due to a shattered foot in december... not sure what to expect but looking forward to it. As for the route i ride most of it 2-3 times a week and it is as mentioned "flat as a pancake" 80-90% of the race will be in big chain ring
  20. Results of x-rays last week show I now have severe Ostia-arthritis as a result of all the trauma to my foot... not much I can do as its going to degenerate and get worse as I get older. Never imagined having arthritis at 24 years old. Anybody else suffer fro this, it seems a common sports injury in the mid-foot and knee regions but normally at an older age?
  21. Bit of a sad update, i have been put back on crutches pending results of an x-ray tomorrow... started getting sharb stabbing pains when walking last week and there is concern that bones may have partially dislocated again, however im glad to say i got in a good 72km on sunday in time of 2h50, not bad considering it was only my 3rd weekend back on a bike.
  22. just out of interest this was the difference in the proportions of my legs after 2 months
  23. Did a quick 20km this evening, found a nice little stretched out uphill that works my leg over really good... i can definitely feel my leg is getting stronger, i managed to actually get out the saddle a pedal abit without feeling like my leg is going to cave in and even put in a little sprint finish.... all in all so far seems like i will be ok having x-rays in a few weeks and will have a long chat to my surgeon then but for now i will keep pushing it as far as i can go
  24. Does anyone or has anyone ridden some road routes out in the hoedspruit area? We have a place out in the Timbivati and going there in December and would like to take my bike with to do a few rides if possible, the scenery is Incredible driving through there but not so sure on which routes are safe to ride on. They are not the best kept roads in the country with every little or no shoulder at all. Thinking of a route leaving from the big pick n pay centre and going out towards palaborwa or Nelspruit/hazeyview. Any ideas or suggestions?
  25. So all seems good. Did another 17km on Sat morning just to stay loose. I have no pain or swelling in my foot that I haven't already got. My legs were bit more tired than I thought on sat and then yesterday they were really flat but other than that I am not stiff or sore in anyway other than a bruised ass from being on a bike again
