  1. I've heard of retired Americans making Winnebago pilgrimages to McDonald's around the country. Are you starting a cycling trend here? Cycle Store Tours.
  2. I'm with eddy. Old school (but then I am a retro grouch). Or single speed. Time to HTFU without those granny gears. Live up to your nick!
  3. Hmmm, this past year or cycling season, nothing at all. Not even an Argus entry. Well, a coffee and a cupcake about 9 months ago. Mainly riding SS has certainly helped.
  4. .
  5. Isn't it a bit scary that many of us have more posts than Matt himself?
  6. Decided to ride to Mpumalanga at 5pm on friday evening? I thought only FRAIL did stuff like that.
  7. Is the %70 and %30 to look more official than 70% and 30%? More international?
  8. No, you could. I had a hub like that, but it was specially built at Linden Cycles, and I have absolutely no idea of why I had it done. Very odd. As I recall, you just stopped pedalling to change the Sturmey gears. Gosh, it is all a long time ago. Mid 70s.
  9. Serious ... and stirring the pot, though it's generally not necessary because it'll boil over anyway, with all the cooks here (myself included). Question: what is a better rider? Methinks your, and others', view would be someone faster, pushing it in the bunch, lowering his PB, winning on Strava or whatever it's called. Sure, wear a helmet ... well, you have to really. Mine might be to be a safer cyclist to some degree, but to spend more time looking around, hearing the cicadas and the birds, noticing flowers at the roadside, smelling the breeze, appreciating the sky and clouds and sea. That, to me, is a successful ride.
  10. A friend's friend posted this on Facebook: "Be very careful on your next mountain biking outing around the Schapenberg route. Almost got decapitated on the trail just below Bizweni Lodge on the first section of the single track. Got knocked clean of my bike by a piece of wire set up across the trail between two trees. Very fortunate that it struck me right across the upper arms. What's next?"
  11. That's a pretty little Kharmann. At least the cyclist is OK ... I hope the car eventually gets to a driver who treats life more responsibly too.
  12. We made a BMX course in the neighbourhood, before anyone knew what a BMX was. Rode our back-pedal-brake Raleighs around that. No helmets. Or in the street at 5pm. No helmets. In the Delta, in the days when it was a disused sewerage farm. No helmets. Bliksemmed down Conrad Drive, or Jan Smuts. No Helmets. Still do (except I got sensible and moved to CT). Bicycles are for riding on, not falling off. Learn to do it properly and you'll be fine. But then I sometimes don't use seat belts either - because the car's 1963 and doesn't require them. My Dad just used to put his arm out to hold us back when he had to slam on anchors. All worked OK. Here I am!
  13. Tsk! Wayne! 9011 posts and then you go and make a noob comment, as though you've never been on The Hub.
  14. Ag, that Adderley Street section is a waste. Motorbikes parked in it, pedestrians who don't look, flower-sellers *** (I got woes and picked up a whole pile of umbrellas and threw them about three metres - amper a groot opskop), fruit vendors, milk cartons, blah-blah-blah. then you get into the road, and it's as bad with double-parkers. Maybe the whole street should be a pedestrian mall?
  15. What else would mine be? I bought it for R1000 from an old guy in Tokai (whose Argus time was a lot better than mine) because I needed a bike for the 94.7 with the same gearing as my other LeTurbo. Flew it up to Joburg, squeezed it into my old lady's beetle, did the race, and left it hanging in the garage for another 2 or 3 years. Nils did it up. I kept it really simple. Everything's pretty much original, apart from the gearing. I think I'm running 42/16, which I admit is kinda woosie but 1) I have to do Highlevel Road every day, and 2) I'm old. It's identical in every way to my standard 7-speed LeTurbo, but it climbs helluva faster. (That white one about 2 pages back, in PE .... woof!)
  16. I remember in the army, if someone in the bungalow screwed up, they were told, "jy drop jou maatjies". At school, we were told that anyone who wore the uniform represented the school. I think both apply here. Not too sure why being a shy and reserved 15-year-old is seen as being an acceptable excuse/reason/whatever.
  17. Good. So you're doing the Argus that way too?
  18. Sterkte, Anton. Our thoughts are with you and the family.
  19. Try this: clamp your top tube between your legs. It seems there's a kind of resonance that sets up through the frame - of course, braking only makes it worse. But gripping the middle seems to deaden the effect.
  20. HTFU, Hamster! No wimping out. I'd do the one closer to home - then you can go on weekends too. On good days, you'll think "Hey, I can do this" and do a session on the way to or from work. But do you have the discipline to still go on a rough day, or will you make excuses and go home?
  21. Should be part of the school syllabus.
  22. You're far too trusting.
  23. Porq, you're amazingly calm. But ja, she's obviously too stupid to actually register a coherent or rational answer. Shame, imagine, some poor people actually have to live/work with her.
