  1. Yes we do, but much less of an advantage than the skinny ones have going uphill.

  3. That sandy rocky section on middle Canary is not nice. Never was like that, but then MTO harvested the trees and destroyed the track. Fortuenately it is a short section and can be bypassed fairly easy by cutting up to the road just after you exit the trees. Lower, middle and upper Canary can all be ridden in both directions. "Oupa" Canary (newest addition & still to be officially named) is more suited to riding down hill. We often went up the Canaries and descended Never-ending-story (Ellioti) but that is still closed; Hope Dirtopia repairs it soon...
  4. Yes, Welvanpas is great. Don't think it was marked "yellow" and "white" when we were there last, but there were two loops from the manor house, one to the north and one to the south (going up towards Bainskloof).   6. Sorry we missed you guys. Got up a bit late. Did not want to push mrs mountain_lion too hard riding from home to Jonkershoek and thus only arrived at the gate at about 08:15. We assumed you would have left by then, so we did our own thing. Kept looking out for OneTime when we past other groups, but did not spot him. Had a good ride; 47km home and back. Next time.

  8. Lets get a few things straight: 1. There are no flats in Jonkershoek. 2. Going slow on the uphills is OK; Going slow on the downhills is not. 3. One Time is a MTB newby??? Think again. 4.   9. Might see you at the gate and start with you. I doubt if mrs mountain_lion and I will be able to keep up and we certainly will not be doing a 5 - 6h ride. Note that many of the single tracks in Jonkershoek have still not been repaired after the fire. The Canary trails are fine (was not burnt). Don't know where but Meurant's team did do some work in Jonkershoek recently.
  10. I ride an Anthem X2, very happy with it. Not familiar with the Merida, which shock and fork does it have? The X3 spec is a bit low, which is why I bit the bullet and got the X2 (2010). Try to ride both (trail ride if possible) and then decide which YOU like best.
  11. Charge it after every ride; surely you download the data in any case, so just leave it on the USB cable until fully charged.
  12. My guess is you are suffering from Morton's Neuroma or "hot feet". Common cycling problem (not limited to high arch feet). Search for it here on TheHub (been discussed often) and Google. Stiffer shoes help, but you actually need to place a "button" under your inner sole in the correct position to solve the problem. Thin pieces of cardboard layered on top of each other works.
  13. If it is not the loose hanger, then I am with Pappa Bear. Most likely a cable routing issue on the section which moves with the suspension. More likely too short outer, but too long can also give problems. Might even just be a dirty/sticky cable in this section, which causes the tension in the cable to change as the rear shock moves. The older Anthems (before X) were particularly prone to this.

  15. Everybody makes mistakes; it is how you react and the corrective action you take afterwards which makes the difference.
  16. My recent CRC order was packaged in 2 separate boxes. It is obvious why they did this - much easier, so no problem with it in principal. Unfortunately they did not clearly label it as one order although they attached the same invoice for the complete order to both boxes. Parcelforce then shipped it as two separate orders instead of an order consisting of 2 boxes. You can guess what SA customs made of that... The 2 boxes got checked by different customs officials and both get hit with the VAT for the full order according to the invoices attached. On top of this one customs official gets confused and processes the order as tools instead of bicycle parts, so it gets hit with duty too. Post office refuse to hand over the order without payment, saying it needs to go back to customs if I want to dispute the duty. The invoices are attached to the boxes which post office do not want to hand over so all I knew at that stage is that the duty is very high and wrong, but can't figure out why. I wanted my stuff so decide to pay the wrong duty and see if I can claim it back later. Once I had all the documentation, the problem was clear. I contact CRC explaining the problem and ask if they can provide written confirmation that the order was only sent once so that I can try to claim from SA customs. Reply from CRC: send the customs invoice to them and they will refund the excess duty and VAT paid! Few days later the refund showed on my credit card account! Well done CRC!! Happy customer who will order again! (perhaps I should still fill in the claim form which SA customs sent me... )
  17. BTW JR, is the version you are using a "Clone" adapted from the orignal for Vista / 7 or the original XP one? IIRC MS says the XP power tools will only work on XP, but that might just mean it will not work on any OS before XP...

This tool works on XP; it is actually part of the MS Power toys for XP set. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx Been using it (plus some of the others) for years (Tweak UI is great and command window here is very useful for me guys like me who still tinker on the command line often...). This is an easy to use tool, but unfortuneatly it only offers the standard sizes as shown in the screenshot above, so cannot comply with Johan's request for 470 wide. The width restriction is however relative to your screen resolution and size. So 470 wide is not an absolute value which will work for all. On wider high resolution screens (e.g. newer laptops) there is no problem viewing 640 wide images uploaded to TheHub. On my home desktop (which still has an older screen with standard aspect, running at 1024 x 768) I do run into the issue Johan describes, but I use Firefox as browser with the ZoomFox extension.   21. Strobe mode is used "to be seen" rather than to see with. E.g. when cycling on roads where there is adequate street lighting or even in daylight, if your light is bright enough.
  22. Dry lube needs to be applied a few hours before you ride as it has to dry before it is effective. It also needs to be worked into the chain well while it is still wet. Dry lube is OK in very dry conditions. However as soon as there is just the slightest bit of water involved (even just a river crossings) sand and water packs onto the wax, it flakes of leaving the chain dry. Another negative of dry lube is that it cannot flow once it has dried. Thus it cannot flow in and out the chain from the wear (pressure) surfaces as a wet lube does. You will note that a wet lube soon gets black. This shows that it is working, carrying the particles released at the wear surfaces to the out side. This is what you want and is the main advantage of a wet lube. A dry lube cannot do this because it is dry and thus cannot flow. Wet lube might pick up more dust / sand than dry lube but this is on the outside of the chain. Not all of this gets carried to the inside. The trick is also not to over lube with wet lube. Although dry lube leaves the chain looking clean, I don't use it any more. Wet lube just works better for me in all conditions. If you clean your chain regularly like you should, it does not matter that it picks up a little bit more dust. Oh, to answer the original question, I am using Finish Line wet lube at present (bottle with green top), but IMHO most wet lubes will work fine. mountain_lion2010-01-01 15:47:50
