  1. The human body is massively adaptable, so it can bend / mould into many positions with relative ease. Pretzel shaped or not. We accept that what we do is ‘good’, and learn to live with that. Unfortunately, good is the enemy of great. Reminds me of the saying(s) about mechanics and their own cars. So, ‘good’ is not what you are looking for when hiring somebody to do a bike fit. Great / excellent is the goal. Sure, many of us can get ourselves comfortable on a bicycle, but is that position optimal for you? (Performance, injuries, limb discrepancies, many of other issues - sometimes even unknown …) Pick a bike fitter with care! It is YOUR body & bicycle. You surely do not take your car to the nearest self professed ‘mechanic’ with a shifting spanner, just as you pick and re-pick doctors for your body with some care? How many people do have the actual knowledge / understanding / inclination to iterate through their own bike setups?

  6. They are not all created equal. If you want/have to trust, trust advise by @J Wakefield I have an idea that he knows a thing or two. Not taking anything away from the others though!
  7. Ditto, also first real gravel race on a gravel bike. Also nervously excited. I aim for a somewhat more doable time that sub 4. Sub something, no quite sure what exactly. Fitness is what it is, I've been building at it incrementally from nothing at the start of the year (and @NotSoBigBen / @Cyclewizz I am NOT sandbagging! You know where to check and confirm how much of nothing I did last year!) Will see what will happen on race day (or do we refer to race day as sugar eating day these days?) Earlier this week EpicRideWeather predicted we'll have a head wind on the second half, but with all the valleys, etc in this area it generally feel like you always have a head wind. PS I see it currently predicts a crosswind for the day
  8. Interesting question I'm planning on flying to Oz to visit family (the excuse), however I plan/hope to do the Gravelista gravel race as well (the reason), so taking my own bicycle is "somewhat" important. Any suggestions on what bike case/box to use, especially as a total of 6 different flights will be involved. JHB-PER, PER-BNE, as well and BNE-MEL. and then all the way back. FYI: For bikehub only: excuse and reason as stated above. For family: excuse becomes the reason, and reason become an opportunity.
  9. With a max average speed of 30km/h of an Audax ride, the rolling resistance might not be such a big deal. Spending 8+ hours in the saddle (25km/h avg) might prioritize comfort. I'd say any tyre from 38mm and larger (including 50mm, or even Dylan Johnston inspired 2.2s). Heck, I did a 150km tar ride the other day on my hardtail MTB (front shock - only shock - locked out). The MTB was wearing 2.35 in the front and 2.3 at the back. Never felt like my tyres were holding me back. The tyres were pumped for the occasion though.
  10. My next Audax will definitely be on the gravel bike. More comfort, less pothole / rut anxiety.
  11. Who'll be there? https://www.anatomic.co.za/products/crater-cruise-t-shirt
  12. https://www.strava.com/activities/14656097256 Matthew Beers – Gravel Ride 5:50 AM on Saturday, May 31, 2025 Emporia, USA Unbound 200 - 16th Maybe, just maybe I’ll have a smooth run at unbound one day. Multiple punctures - thanks to Spez off - road for the very fast 2 wheel changes.
  13. Excuse my ignorance, but who is the lady with the ZA flag around her sleeves? edit: Haley Preen
  14. Unbound live stream starts at 5pm South Africa Time. Roughly 4 hours into the race
  15. Under Train on the horizontal bar, select TrainingPeaks Virtual Workouts from the drop down, scroll down and you'll find FTP Test (Ramp) FTP Test (20 min) as well as various Critical Power tests https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/31340403177485-TrainingPeaks-Virtual-Critical-Power edit: * switch off ERG mode, if not disabled by the test * go full zen mode because when you are breathing through your eyes you will not appreciate your surroundings
  16. Thanks, just tried this! I took a longish 4mm 'sinkbout' from my drawer of loose screws and stuff of and used that. Now I have one spare Shimano bolt to look after.
  17. Apparently N+1 is not the thing to do… https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJl0xXEyQwx/?igsh=cW4zM2Y3Z2ZuM2g1
  18. Two hard tails. One has a steel frame, used to be a SS, masquerading as a monster cross with drop bars and road groupset affair. The other is an alu hard tail. trail/enduro/downhill: no go for me, my bones ran out of rubber, so now they break with impacts, they’re not bendy anymore
  19. Ao N+1 happened and I’ve been on a few rides already. Love it. Feels fast, although it makes it painfully obvious that I need better legs. Photo is from my first ride after going for a fit. Now we dream of dual suspension MTBs 🤤
  20. Took my road bike from yesteryear and stripped it down. RD has no cable, as it functions purely as a chain tensioner. Handlebar and hoods are on another bike. FD and brakes went to the parts bin. Front wheel was cheaper than a kickr climb and easier than to macguyver something. No grips nor tape. Bars are just there as grab handles to maintain balance after intervals. Using my phone to drive the screen with a usb-C to hdmi converter, as my laptop is from yesteryear as well to-do: need to get the chain on a bigger rear cog, it is noisy in the 13/14 it runs at the moment. Might just fish out some single speed spacers and ‘stuff’ to do it.
  21. I drove up to Jhb on Saturday for a bike fit on the gravel bike. Post the fit, decided to go do a ride around the Cradle. Started just after 1:00. With 2 vehicles, the vehicle warning disappeared on the Varia radar, meaning the car is matching my speed. One vehicle specifically, a beat up silver sedan, made me feel uncomfortable so I kept on looking back. Eventually decided to change to the MTB track next to the tar. The moment I did that the car sped up and drove off. Decided against another lap, as I was basically the only bicycle out there. stay alert, and stay safe!
  22. The non-elite 92 & 145km riders also have to finish. So you will not be all alone at the finish and on the route!
  23. You will not be the only one. Go, and just have fun. In any case, everybody will be too busy enjoying themselves to worry about others being ‘different’! and the racing snakes? Let them racing snake!
  24. I've been mixing 2:1 ratio of 40g maltodextrin and 20g fructose in a 750ml bottle. Still need to eat something on slow long ride (4-5 hours) I need to get a mix right that'll work for a 6 hour high intensity ride, but I'll be limited to 2 bottles and a 1.5l mini mule, otherwise I'll have to stop for water. Mixing high volumes of malto and fructose seems to need more work than just measuring off the dosages, add water and shake... What do you guys do to get the stuff to dissolve at higher volumes per bottle?
