  1. i need to order a rear derailleur from Merlin fairly urgently, after the "new" derailleur i bought from a hubber turned out to be a busted lemon. nobody seems to have local GRX stock. anyone in Cape Town keen to add to my order to split shipping and handling? for my 1 part, shipping is R654, but with a few items it drops to 327, so it pays to add a few bits. UPS handling is R200 *just no clothing, as that brings customs costs in* cheers
  2. thanks Robert. hate to look a gifthorse in the mouth, but i think hydro's may complicate matters. its beyond my abilities, and he works night shifts, so i only get to work on it after hours. i may stump up for a set of brake calipers if i find some going for cheap
  3. spent some time fixing a security guards bike. new cables and all, only to find the front (3x) shifter is toast, as is the rear brake caliper. while the shifter isnt a deal breaker, the stopping mechanism is kinda key. front brake works but has no pads. does anyone either have an set of calipers or some parts i can try restore the brakes with and anyone know what pads work on those cheap cable discs? its on on of those Melinda mountain bikes, the brake name looks like it says Tessa or similar - possibly like a promax i'll send a photo shortly
  4. my thoughts exactly. Reckon the event was forgotten about, no marketing, an entry page that wasnt maintained, and no updates until after asking about the site. weather apps don't show dodgy skies, and no such story from Race to the Sea which is in a similar area
  5. Thanks Nick, much appreciated.
  6. Thanks. Sent PPA an email and got a very quick response this morning. Think it may have jogged memories to make the postponement update. On Saturday the site still had 2 Sept. Apparently there is an "adverse weather" concern for the weekend.
  7. Has anyone been able to enter for this thing. Seems the link goes to an unsafe site
  8. I was recommended the SQLabs tape about 3 years back, and never looked back. Not sure how long tape should last but that first roll still looks and feels brand new. Superb grip and comfort, and no other brand has come close in terms of wear
  9. Triptych is the winner. Used to send a bike from CT to Springbok and sent to/from JHB and was the same price. About 610. So if they go to Springbok, they should have no issue collecting from George? Service is second to none.
  10. this is 100% it. this week spent checking conditions, i wasn't worried about mud, rain, bottom brackets etc. it was the risk of hypothermia or getting some sickness that is going to keep me from training for 3 weeks. Juice not worth the squeeze. the meds and doctors visit will add up to more than the entry fee
  11. Shot. Will let my mate know. Looks can be deceiving!
  12. Surely that's the carbon frame only? TyronLabs question is a good one. The site says that max clearance for the alloy. My friend bought a switch, thinking he could put big mtb 650b 2.0s on and I don't see how that or a 700x50mm could ever fit in the back.
  13. super, thank you. I'll try get them out tonight
  14. Thank you. I thunk first step is I'd need to pop the caps off and measure them so I know how generic they are. Were the QR caps easy enough to machine?
  15. i've got a set of Merida Comp wheels i want to use for a build for a friend, so replacing the hub is a last resort. the wheels are Thru Axle (100x12 and 142x12). The frame i have has a TA fork, but rear dropouts are QR. the hubs have no markings but a google seems to have them listed as VP hubs. the end caps look removable, but no amount of searching comes up with VP QR end caps existing anywhere i've emailed Cape Cycle Systems and VP Components direclty, but yeah...a reply is as rare as the end caps. anyone have any experience with these wheels or hubs, and whether another brand would be compatible.
  16. @Dylanmtb if i may chime in... I'm sure you've sat on the bikes, but at 188, your probably don't need to be looking at an XL. I'm 188 and 100kg, and while my large Cannondale fits me perfectly, but i've always wished i got to spend some time on a medium before buying. I imagine it would increase the fun factor, a smaller frame would be more flickable/lively. the opinions of more experienced MTB'ers will be worth hearing, but i'd wager that smaller is safer. you can always make a small bike bigger, but you can't shrink a farm gate.
  17. 4 pairs of bibs, first of which i've been using for just over 2 years. recently bit the bullet and got a thermal jersey and gilet, combo set me back 2500 which hurt at the time, but actually looks a bargain in comparison. quality and fit are superb
  18. ugh... i dont know why i am weighing in, but this fence is helluva comfy. If you pay for an event and there are issues, you have EVERY right to be critical, i'm sure the organisers take it on board, you need thick skin to keep at it. even the most poorly worded comment may have value. Events are tough to organise and things go wrong, and everyone pays school fees along the way. Re ambulances and beer, we've all had a dud service that came highly recommended. I didnt need either, but still found it annoying. Most annoying was not even a free water after the ride. My focus, however, is having AS MANY fun events at my fingertips at an affordable price. We can back the organisers AND complain when things dont pan out. I'd hate for every event to turn into a 5,000 person snoozefest around Slent, so free entry sounded great on the day, but lets think long term. i'd like to do this again in 2025, as well as others like it. Viva la +'s and -'s, i'm keen to go pedal in dirt.
  19. I've read that with Pathfinders and the like, you really feel that step/drop from the centre to the tread, and can be offputting? when you're moving on the Pirelli's the centre knobs almost form a solid line, but dont sacrifice the consistent grip.
  20. I am TOO EXCITED to try the H's. I've got a set of 40mm, waiting till i've burnt through the Velo 35s to put them on my cross bike. And my old man has a set of the classic (brown sidewall) M's that he seemingly has no interest in using. So i am well stocked!
  21. But in all seriousness, i felt i had to make a forum post for a tyre! Just over 18 months into my love affair with these things, and genuinely feel its the single best bike-related thing i have ever spent money on. Mud, rivers, big rocks, corrugations, sand, slate, tar and technical terrain. These things just laugh at what you throw at them. I keep thinking "surely this time they will puncture", "surely this time they'' hit their limit", but they remain composed, comfortable and confidence inspiring. They also respond well on tar, which is meant to be their weakness, the centre tread is almost solid.
  22. Thats it. thats the post.
  23. No stress at all and no need to apologise. Glad you managed to push through, that's a victory. I'm sure a lot of people got hit with the delayed start impacting nutrition. I was blown away by how many people asked if I needed anything. I'm not going to lose sleep over the extra hour or so. Parts of me are hurting today that I didn't know existed, pushing is no joke. Respect to kids who spend all day on a balance bike 😂 See you there next year, I've already marked off my calendar.
  24. Yip. Did you also stop for a bit to look. If so, I am SO grateful for your efforts. I hope I didn't cost you too many minutes. In the heat of the moment I didn't think things through. Zane offered me his, but when it didnt work first time, I gave it back. Then I had nothing, and all I needed to do was take out another piece of vrot chain. I tested a link at home last night and worked perfectly. I always carry links and half the toolbox with me, but had lent this bike to a friend and taken stuff off it.
