  1. I actually have the same problem with my Exustar Ti's. have serviced and greased them up but they still creak. I'll be interested to hear of any solution!
  2. sorry let me rephrase that...most of the more technical (what ever you may personally think of as technical) stuff is standing. boring flat is sitting.
  3. Yep, i reckon most of the time is spent standing, gives you a better look at the trail ahead, lets your bike move under you, handles drop offs better etc...in saddle for climbs on loose stuff.
  4. Thanks MoreTrails, I am going tubeless to avoid punctures more than reduce my pressure and improve grip. The trails I am riding often provide me with bits of rubbish not in the sidewall but right in the tread which are unavoidable UST or no. With tubes I was spending too much/week on replacements, the last time i ran tubeless i ran the same trails and the same pressures as i just prefer the harder tyre and didn't see a puncture for 6 months. Thats what i'm trying to do with my new wheelset which are UST rims. When I brought the wheelset they came with UST tyres on, they're heavy and compared to the non-UST really have a high rolling resistance. Since I don't really get a lot of pinch flats with high pressures and don't get a lot of side wall damage, is there any point in spending more and going slower with a more hardy tyre? I rekcon I'll give the non-UST a go and carry a tube with me just in case.
  5. If you ride with high pressures then the chances of pinching the side wall is reduced and that sort of reduces the need for UST tyres. Tears from trail debris and rocks are just unlucky i suppose. But if you have non-UST then its a quick fix by throwing a tube in. If you are running high pressures and have a highly inflated non-UST tyre then also the use of slime means you don't need inner tubes...or am i completely wrong.
  6. It does seem slightly pointless but i'd like to hear what everyone thinks. Tubes are a serious pain in the arse, why bother if you have sealant and a good tight bead seal?
  7. Do you other guys who have used non-UST tyres on UST rims also use inner tubes as well as sealant?
  8. I thought the point if sealant is to remove the need for the inner tube. Tubeless rims are designed to form an airtight seal around the bead so i didn't think the tub was necessary. I run my tyres at pretty high pressure so i'm not too worried about beading rolling out or loosing the seal.
  9. This is true. I'm more an instant gratification kind of guys which is why i've got no money. There are some quite light frames around the hub at the moment that would form the foundations for some really nice machines...if you choose to go the pre-owned route, which is not a bad idea on the big things like frames and wheels, then i'd stay away from carbon.
  10. Good advice, Reckon i'll go a get me some new quick tyres tomorrow and get the LBS to mount them and seal them with slime pro.
  11. On small components like seat posts and stems i would reckon go with Aluminium, KCNC do some super lightweight scandium stuff which is awsome but costs lots. for the smaller stuff aluminium and alloys are often as light and require less maintanance than the carbon bits with the sacrifice of the bling. If you want carbon i'd go for Ritchey WCS carbon as its great quality carbon. Handlebars...carbon is the idea, is more comfy and reduces trail vibrations. Bear in mind if you start along this track it'll cost lots of money, each upgrade when you get into the high end stuff will cost about R1000. For instance, KCNC seatpost R850+, Ritchey Carbon seatpost R900+.
  12. Nice, in which case what is considered to be the best sealant to run with Maxxis or Kenda tyres? Looking at the small block eight or the crossmark on the rear and don't yet know about the front.
  13. Hi all, I've been reading arouns for info on running non-UST tyres on UST rims. The benefits being weight saving, the cons being much reduced side wall protection. Some guys running non-UST tyres on UST rims have noted the occasional popping out the beading during riding, ending in spectacular bush invasions. What are the risks of running non-UST on UST rims? besides the higher potential for punctures and side wall tears. I'm looking for a really quick rolling hardpack XC tyre now we're heading into the dry season in JHB. I'm running UST tyres now and find them heavy and with higher rolling resistance than my foldables. Ideas anyone?
  14. Got a quote from one post office, they said R250 not including insurance. the Post office by my parents said they don't even deal with parcels of that size and said it'd cost R1000 as they have to work out the charge for the volume of the box, which comes out to an equivilant of a 32kg package....not convinced at all. So settled on a 2-3 delivery which costs R300 door to door.
  15. I'm also happy with the Crossmark. Ca you run the non-UST tubeless on tubeless rims? Hows the sidewall on the crossmark. The Crossmark LUST are pretty heavy.
  16. Are you running Rockets front and back? I'm running Crossmark up front and rear and think they're great but am going to go for the Swalbe next. Why are you moving from tubeless?
  17. Thats R50 for two wheels in a large box? That would be amazing. I have got quotes from a number of couriers, the cheapest being R500 for a slow road courier taking a week.
  18. Hi, I'm trying to find some generous person who is able to bring back my new wheels for me from CT. If you are travelling from CT to JHB in the next day or so my wheels are all packed and ready but needing someone to babysit them. I can arrange a drop off at your house and will pick them...and you up from the airport if needed. Call it a free airport transfer for you and my wheels!!!!! PM me or phone on 0794861753.
  19. I would love to but unfortunately I don't know any of them! I shall post a thing on here in the hope that someone looks and feels generous!
  20. Not particularly helpful, but thanks for the reminder.
  21. If anyone's flying up this week and feels like bringing up a box with them...I'd be eternally grateful.
  22. So, i'm trying to get my new wheelset from my folk's place in CT to JHB. Including the box and everything the package weighs between 3-4kg. Whats the best way to get it sent? I have seen a couple of posts on here that have said wheels costs about R250 to send. Is this realistic? Any opinions and advice would be very helpful as i'm dying to get them on the trail!
  23. Keep the hardtail...you never know you may just prefer it! Also you could convert it to a single speed demon. Congrats on the new toy, have you got a pic? as i can't be bothered to look it up right now. I'm sure you'll have hundreds of happy k's
  24. Its true that is odd, i suspect the marketers would tell you that road shoes are made with no padding which disipates energy, whereas many mountain bike shoes are made with some padding in the insole which may not be as efficent...but i'm sure the differences are actualy tiny for normal riders.
