  7. meanwhile... the rest of us sit in semi-suspense.....
  8. did this 3 weeks ago. Faulty Edge305 (battery pins get bad connection, so it kept turning off). walked in saturday morning, 15 minutes and R1300 later, a brand new in-the-box Edge500 bundle (which I sold here, got a 2nd hand standalone unit for R1400 here) - so upgrade cost me R100 overall.
  9. +1. Maybe a frame of a lighter alloy if you have an entry level, or changing your gearing, if you're running 3x10 -> 1x10 / 1x11
  10. After riding with an Edge 305 for 8 months, have just upgraded to the 500 a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with the unit, works well.
  11. That's why I use Garmin. *edit* only saw jcza's reply now....
  12. We used to call it "angry and coke"
  13. If you call a brandy an Irish, you might p*** some people off...
  14. - That fork is 2.4kg. Get an air fork to save 1kg. - Probably have a fair amount of weight you could shed in the wheelset + tubeless conversion. - depending on your riding strength, 2x10 or 1 speed in front could also save a bit of weight (1x10 / 1x11 = 1 less shifter / der and lighter crank).
  15. I hope you ordered a Fish Eagle brandy on the rocks when you got back.
  16. awesome story! The bird must have been going for the hare hair.
  17. are results available anywhere?
  18. I enjoyed the race too. I think in large part because I missed my J starting block for the 70, and ended up going out with the 20km B group. 2km in, I was told I was on the wrong route (by another rider) so i headed back to the start to confirm the route. I was on track. Just past the graveyard, the 70km markers were already gone, and I had a suspicion that I'd missed a 70km split about 1km later. so backtracked 1km where I located the traffic cop who confirmed that 70km riders had crossed the main road earlier. I thought I was on track from there on. only to take the 10km split and add an extra little loop in. first 20kms of the route (26km in my terms) i didn't see another rider (except for 2 choc riders and another walking back with a bust rear wheel). The most eventful part of that section was riding through a farm yard and being bulldozed from 1 side by a great dane while another pitbull'ish dog had a nice bite of my calf (post-race tet shots.. Yay!) 1st tail ender was caught in that lovely Navara rock garden. 15 down by the 2nd waterpoint. Took the time to take in some decent scenary. Total lack of bottlenecks until about 35km in. Having been off the bike for 2 weeks due to flu, which I recovered from just in time, i was more than happy to finish without cramps or hitting a wall, with a 4h20 for 81.4km. I wasn't crazy about the last few kms with numb feet due to that marshy water crossing. Overall, really enjoyable ride and greatful for minimal bottlenecks with my starting strategy. Some nice chats with other riders along the way too. I got a literal sense of what a Trail Seeker is about
  19. Yeah do loose a bit
  20. I can do most in my middle 32t front at the moment, but its those 18%+ gradients that i think i would a little more power on (which I drop to 24x36 currently)
  21. +1. on a 2x10 running 26 front ring and 36 back gives you a 0.7222 ratio. if you run a 1x11 with 30 in front and an extra 39t rear, then you're running a 0.769 ratio for granny... with no front shifting.
  22. been reading over these threads for a while, and been considering the same, but there were some good points in the other thread - you're spending a hell of a lot on only a bit of weight saving. I'd rather take a few months to toughen up and go from 3 x 10 to 1 x 11, removing the whole front der + shifter. Would do it now, but i need my 24 x 36 for monster climbs still. Guys running on 1 x 9 / 10 / 11 - what are you running? 30 x 11-38 sort of thinng?
  23. Rocket Ron 29" 2.25 front (on an RS Reba) @ 1.8 Racing Ralph rear @ 2. 70 - 75kg
