  1. Exactly the same as a midday train in Perth. Direct quote by a lady with 3 kids all of whom were clearly from a different dad: 'No, you can't see Daddy today." "Why, Mommy?" "Cos he attacked someone with a big knife, and he's in prison"
  2. The 99er climbing for the 45km is far more consistent than that very steep hill except for the Contermans mast section of about 200m that most people will push. There is a lot more climbing with a lot less flat sections but it is not all terribly steep. There is also much more single track so if you enjoy that it will be right up your alley. But if it is hot day and you are not that fit it will be a challenge.
  3. Fabian is gonna smash it. (leave a man to his memories...)
  4. Hmmm... Only cos Peter saw the dark side of his moon
  5. The whole lead-up Carbon29er was telling us Sagan was a 'wide boy'. Obviously that is why he hit the barrier, and not the much narrower okes around him. Spoiled a damn good finale though
  6. Are you surprised happy, or surprised sad?
  7. Who is Richard van Vuuren? #lost
  8. Pulled 42 thorns out of one tyre after Philadelphia race one year. Make sure you refill the sealant.
  9. Cannot fail to disagree more. Edit: having seen videos and having sold my entry, the only thing I can fault the organisers for is the start. It was ludicrous in 2009 and not that great in the other years. And from the videos I have seen it needs to change. Problem is, I can't see an easy solution that allows people to keep using the freeway to access later starts, with parking.
  10. The 30km ladies race will be exciting!
  11. A Mamil in white lycra is an affront to evolution, Mother Nature, and dare I say, God. And that isn't even a religious contradiction!
  12. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." Saw that on an Anzac plaque just yesterday, a short while after talking about Tumbles and what happened. I may not have known him in person but we had many stupid, silly and serious interactions on the Hub, and he made me laugh, and think, and sometimes think about laughing. RIP Barry.
  13. I was talking about Barry in the car here yesterday and my OH's uncle told me the story of a bunch of offroad marathon runners in northern Australia caught in a bushfire during a race. One lady had 3rd degree burns over 90% of her body and was also fighting every day. But after treatment she has now married the paramedic who saved her life. Be strong, Barry - you can overcome!
  14. Changing one's view is like magic - no one should be able to see it happen. For shame... I still think e-bikes are motorbikes. Whether they are suitable for trails is an entirely different matter. And if anyone sees my mate Mamil storming around on a trail near you on one, please call the paramedics. I will die of embarrassment.
  15. Roadies doing mountain biking you mean. On 26's. And lycra. Numpties galore.
  16. See above. It is not about the tool, but the tools that use them. Whoever smashes a trail is a tool. An e-biker who smashes a KOM is a tool. A normal cyclist who thinks fat, lazy, unfit people shouldn't have help if they can afford it is a tool. (irony font intended) Don't be a tool.
  17. Thanks for the update, Kevin. I may never have met him but he has definitely contributed more than most to the site. That I agree with him on most things is I am sure a coincidence, that we both have a love for stupid puns, likely a personality problem. Please give him our best.
  18. That's just because there are many shades of grey, and some shades are darker than others. Whereas you might see an issue as merely a bit of moral slap and tickle, I might feel the need to whip up the baying thong.* There have been many previous discussions on other threads covering our personal predilections for punishment of the guilty athlete. But yes, watching Evans and Hincapie could be fun. Edit: * - throng
  19. Hate to disagree with you, but a would think that a mistake has a couple of broad characteristics: 1) it was done with atleast some degree of unintentionality 2) that the consequences can be reasonably easily ascertained 3) some learning/growth is done that prevents a recurrence of the mistake 4) most importantly, acceptance of the mistake, and recompense and restitution is done in good faith, because the parties recognise 1) above. Perhaps it may even take a series of mistakes by an individual, but then expand that to a series of murders and the mistakes aren't considered as clear cut. While I agree that it it not black and white as to where a mistake ends and a crime begins there is at least some reason to believe that systematic fraud over decades, without acceptance, nor recompense to innocent parties, is not just a mistake. I have read tons on the subject and am busy with 'The End of the Road' about the Festina affair. They made an active, comprehensive decision to cheat using defined processes and methods. As did our friend Lance Armstrong (allegedly, out of his own mouth). Perhaps you said it best about the 'punitive remedy to restore order'. In this case, as in so much of society at the moment, there is none. Just a vindication for the truth eventually.
  20. Only saw this now... Heal up, and get back soon, Tumbles, the Hub will not be the same without you. Word up!
  21. I'm afraid that while there is many a slip between cup and lip, all I did was go down hard on Mother Earth. You will see that from about group H up it is very much more challenging. That is where fit new guys enter the ranks and where particularly dodgy teams often practice their pacelines. If you can't average about 36/37kph some of the group E rides get interesting. On the hills especially, for us previously gravity enhanced folk.
  22. Highest I ever got was E. but I haven't done a road race since the pelvic plunge* of Dec 15 * - not what you think
  23. This is pretty much exactly what I think. He was so much better than the rest of the field two years ago, I was sad to watch a team race. (Like Annika last year) Really hope Nino comes to fight though.
