True, banning them is never going to reduce the risk. But if its against the law to ride on that section of the road then the easy cop out will be to ban you permanently, and not fix the attackers. Politicians and the feds will see that as a reduction in attacks, therefore they did their job correctly. All they actually do is remove the targets Dont get me wrong, Im an not against shooting the crims when you get attacked - I believe people need to earn pain to learn a lesson. Im just being realistic as to what the authorities will end up doing

Were you on the actual N1 when it happened? I wonder if the authorities are reluctant to take action as cyclists arent allowed on the national highways. Ive been down this road, and going the HT route first, with upgrades as you go on, is costly. By the time you've been through 2 frames and upgrades you've spent a fair amount of dosh that could have bought you a dual suspention the first time round. The same for buying good bibs... buy good and right the first time Consider this: get a dual for you and an HT for mrs. When you upgrade the components on the dual you swap them over onto the HT. If it has Shimano components this will be better at mid level range and cheaper than Sram to replace. If money allows, get a 1x12, or if not, then a 2x11 which you can change to a 1x11 easily enough and be happy for years (and cheaper than 12 speed). And if someone only bleats about how good a Scotty (or whatever brand it is), then they've probably never riden any other brand and should perhaps stick to knitting #bringbacktheclassifiedcomments 😏

Coming from the MX world, and you're already getting the itch to do some tech trails, you'll quickly learn to hate a hard tail. if you're only going to do the open road and basic trails type stuff then you'll enjoy the HT with an added dropper In your budget you can get a good 2nd hand 29" dual suspension bike with mid range components on it. You can upgrade as you go along but one of the first investments you'll be making is a dropper post. If mrs isnt going to do anything tech, then a hard tail will be fine. You can always put wider tyres to run a lower pressure which will help on the corrgated and bumpy roads, albeit at a harder grind to move the bike along at a nice pace. Swings and round abouts

@droo Speaking of upgrades, is it possible to upsize the rotors on a gravel bike? I run the GRX BR-RX400 calipers on 160mm rotors on a Revolt Advanced 2 frame. Any reason why I cant upsize the rotors to 180mm front and rear? (with the additional brackets for the calipers of course)

Im all for bigger rotors Upsize the rotors to 203/180mm - you'll have to get a new mounting bracket for the front caliper to get the position correct to the rotor. Then, use the existing front 180 bracket for the rear. Get new OEM brake pads (Shimano) on the new rotors. Set them nicely and you'll stop on a dime Im not sure where you are based, but chat to @droo or one of the other LBS guys and get some parts. It'll take you all of 10min to do the changes and a butt size cheaper than a new set of brakes altogether
