  1. A flyer here, but an e-bike would be the trick to go with. Modern, tech advanced, great gains in design and strength of the components, efficient gains on the propulsion systems too. A good looker (in my book) in this case is the Trek E-xe If its a roadie, a number of the Canyon's blur my view 🥰 and if its a mtb, then a Spez Epic evo fills that gap for me (because they just look the part - not going on actual performance)
  2. You and Frosty suffer from 'The Knack' Edit: I added the link for 'The Knack' in case you cant find it... https://youtu.be/g8vHhgh6oM0 (oh the irony 🤣)
  3. OK, I have a m8000 hub body, and a m8010 thru axle. They're not compatible. I had a problem with my qr hub in the past and the lbs rebuilt the m8010 hub (which is thru axle) to a quick release. I have the remaining hub parts which you're welcome to use to rebuild yours The thru axle part above is brand new. The hub is my old m8000 32h. The thru axle part does not fit into the hub though Failing all that, call @Kiwi at Rapide.co.za , I know they do a 32h thru axle hub in 142mm - I have one of theirs now with a 12sp micro spline freebody DM me if you want to try the hub parts I have. Mahala
  4. Still can't see the Pic. But... I might have a hub for you. Let me dig a little
  5. A 38 will make you hurt. Its hard enough to use a 38 even on the flats I have a 38t 104bcd (round) if you want to test it, and a stupid ass single track out back if you want to kill yourself on the ups for the test ride. Unless you're a racing snake like the pro's - then you'll be fine And @TheoG - you should put a 34 or even a 32t on, come ride the masts again and you'll be pleasantly surprised as to how much tech stuff you can actually do - I'm convinced its over gearing that puts you off
  6. I shudder at the look of that stem... that cant be real? But don't you non Bulls supporting folks have access to the name that belongs to that number on the race board?
  7. Anyone got a spare cassette lock nut for a 12speed Shimano cassette lying around? Joey's area if possible Can part with beer/coffee/real ronts in exchange
  8. Ok, I'm now listening properly: Would you mind telling me how to connect a raspberry pi (or in my case it will be a Mi-Box - same thing really) to the Mecer unit? And I presume you just load the solar assistant to the Mi-box? Then? I run normal gel batteries so I cant connect the comms from these. But, I do like the idea of the app controlling the inverter. As mine stands, the thing is constantly running (fan unit). I'll also check setting #27 and change to 51.2v as you suggest
  9. A mate of mine borrowed a demo 9.8 (I think it was that... It was the top spec though) and put it through its paces here in the south of Joey's. He's a serious Enduro rider and if anyone knows the masts out back here they'll know it's not for the faint hearted - up or down. He rode the routes 3 times, did 30km and 720m of climbing. If I recall the battery was at 30 odd % when he was finished, but he did hammer it in all modes to test it out. The Exe is a very incredible piece of equipment, and if an enduro rider gives it the green light for the extreme fun factor, then I'm sure its something to take note of. It certainly is on my list of goodies to have in the garage. I cannot think of a better way to increase the fun factor levels on a bicycle. I probably won't race it, but for the sheer thrill of getting to the top easier to enjoy the downs more, then sign me up!
  10. The cost of a 12sp axs system is quickly made up in the cost of servicing a manual system. You should try it sometime 😉 But yes, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, a 1x11 is the bullet proof way to go on a budget. And I think we're all missing something here - the beloved crank. What is the BCD for a 3x system? Can you fit a 1x chainring on it? Or do you need to change it?
  11. My guess: 11 speed has more space than a 12 speed to do the shifting between gearing. Sure, in that vein then 10 and by default the 9 speed would have more spacing too making it easier. But you dont get the best gear ratio's on a 1x9 or 1x10, so 11 is the magical number for the best ratios and shift settings With the advent of electronic shifting in the 12 speed market, the goal posts are moved. And no, its got nothing to do with a boost frame giving you more space on the rear triangle
  12. You want a rear mechanism with a long cage, this allows you to get to the 51t granny gear cassettes if you want to, but most cassettes go to the 46t which is fine for a long cage Scratch around on the hub classifieds for a Shimano XT 11speed derailleur - best in class and bullet proof (read as idiot proof). Or, go for a normal Shimano Deore derailleur - slightly cheaper when new but just as bomb proof. Check here: https://evobikes.co.za/product/shimano-deore-rd-m5100-11-speed-rear-derailleur/ Most of the Shimano rear derailleurs use the same internal components (clutches, springs, cages etc) and parts are readily available or its easy enough to scrounge parts off dead derailleurs and use them on yours. If budget allows, get an XTR shifter but if not, then XT is great or Deore shifter will be good enough. Lastly, Most older frames that have a 2x or 3x system have the RD cable system exposed to the elements. Meaning the outer cable is only on the front and rear of the bike and the middle section is exposed usually along the down tube. With a drill bit or needle file, open the cable outer holder on the frame up a bit to allow a full outer sleeve to be used from the shifter to the derailleur. This will prevent egress of water/mud/sand/grit into the bottom section of the outer and damage the cable system, meaning you wont have to replace it as often. Example: Open cable: Outer all the way along the down tubes: Pics shamelessly nicked of the interwebs Where are you based? There's a bunch of very helpful chaps on the forum that can get you going in the right direction with parts and save you school fees.
  13. Shimano use microspline hubs... Anyway - @DodgeB read this to answer all your questions: https://off.road.cc/content/feature/which-freehub-body-do-i-need-sram-shimano-9-10-11-12-speed-hg-xd-micro-spline
  14. It all depends on your hub's freebody, but 9 speed freebody should be able to go up to an 11speed cassette. Remove your current cassette and check what freebody it has, that'll guide you going forward to your current options Its worth it - bigger % range, less clutter, less sh*t to break etc. But yes, at a higher price
  15. Perhaps local as opposed to public Semantics
  16. Well, what makes a brand boutique then? I guess if you have good worldwide representation we (as souff effricans) perceive it to be premium. Where as in, say Scotland, they haven't even heard of TR
  17. Don't over think it. If you were racing to win the xco world champs and miss a clip in, then I'd say sure, over think it. The idea of flats with clipless inside is that you are able to un-clip and use the flats for the down runs and position your feet as you want them, then re-clip when you get to the bottom. They're not there for a miss fire of the left foot or brain
  18. SPD's. There are various pedal options available to you based on what your budget can afford. Or, Crank Brothers for egg beaters, with the same various options depending on your budget SPD's are the most common and popular by far. Both OEM's manufacture flat's with spd's or egg beaters inside them, maybe you want to look at that option if you ride flats most of the time. They're all bullet proof enough, and as they get more expensive, so do their ease of servicing increase and the weight is reduced. The cheapies you can just toss if they run a bearing.
  19. What pissed me off, was that Gauteng cycling officials were running around all over the place looking all too important to control their minions, yet they were happy send their flock into that race knowing of the dangers. No one had access to the route before hand except the powers that be, and I'm sure there would have been a rather large outcry if entrants had seen this before the race day. Absolute disgrace if you ask me, regardless of having one less marshal to help control traffic for riders to cross a road
  20. Who was the race organizer that decided to hoof the 70km riders along the side of the R59 highway in the sloot, with traffic, then against traffic on the way home? You had plenty other routes to use but instead used the water furrow on the highway.... I don't care who you are. You're an idiot for selecting that section. And csa... You lot should have stepped in and changed the route, when you approved it before it even started. Morons... Its the least I can say
  21. Hmmm... So you're buying top/upper end components with a mid-ish range frame then Ok I'll stick with Nancy thanks
