Clear is one of the biggest pains to spray, especially for the backyard types like me, without sufficient lighting its near impossible to judge the thickness of the coats, but as you discovered, the odd run can be buffed out successfully. So far one of the easiest colors I've painted is matte black, hits the frame all nice and shiny and within a few seconds starts to matte, very easy to paint with, I had gloss paint under with the decals masked off, got some ridges around the edges when i removed the masking though, would probably use less hardener in future to allow the edge to settle more. We should start a thread around respraying frames, perhaps Bogus would make an appearance to share some tricks with us amateurs.
