  1. Hey jc - this is going to be interesting - particularly due to the fact that you have been there and done that - will be going into it somewhat informed as opposed to blind. In terms of reaction to carbs I'm beginning to think that there is a component of wheat vs other white stuff (well, for me anyway) - will be interesting to see if you get the same discomfort with e.g. potato vs wheat. It's pretty low carb too, no stuffing around...
  2. Aaannd... our garden executive has wheedled my thoroughbred out of my hands and pedalled off down the driveway - my single speed converter and all. He tells me that if he has a bike he will no longer be late in the morning, so it is very important... I reserve judgement.
  3. For me, main thing is to have enough salt and water (stay hydrated). If you still battling, get some psyllum husk from Dischem - stuff works a charm. Hard to calibrate how much is enough. Not very much seems fine...
  4. 105km yesterday on water. MTB on mix of tar and gravel. . Took a tube of vooma in case, never came close to using it. All in top gear as strength exercise. Used to do part of this route pre-LC and couldn't complete without camelbak of go-juice.
  5. The problem with dry wors of biltong in our house is that it is not possible to maintain supply at an equal or greater rate than consumption But drywors or fatty biltong is not a bad idea.
  6. Hi guys I'm doing a bit more exercise than I'm used to and I spend the day feeling whacked. I think I'm going to have protein shake before leaving for work. Any suggestions for a LC whey protein? The ones I've bought in the past have been sweeter than one would imagine whey ptn to be, so I suspect sweetener / sugar of some kind. Rgds Dave
  7. Must we freeze the chutney first?
  8. Yep - I've been struggling with cramps as well, but I'm also riding harder so I'm sure that's part of it. Magnesium seems to help - I have to take it otherwise i get cramps during everyday life too - normally in my feet of all places.
  9. If it hasn't been mentioned yet: thefappening.eu
  10. My current feeding scheme (not saying this is 100%, it's just what I've ended up doing): I leave early so I take food to work - normally a tub of double cream yog with extra cream added, plus some mixed nuts / crushed macadamias / maybe a sprinkle of that new 'granola' from Woolies that is crushed almonds/coconut/some raisins (I go easy on this - just a sprinkle to add some variation).3 eggs scrambled with whatever is lying around from supper the night before mixed in.an avo with salt, pepper and balsamic.I often don't eat towards midday (not that hungry) and often don't get around eating the avo - often eat it as I'm making supper so's not to waste it. Supper - protein with green veg (beans/broccoli/spinach/courgettes/cabbage/whatever) and a squash - gems/pumpkin/hubbard (Noakes book has it as 'not bad' as far as I remember) occasionally butternut. Red wine. Block of Lindt 70 - 90% after. Coffee I have in the morning, either from Seattle on the way to work, or at work, sometimes with cream, sometimes with milk. No real strategy here. Got tired of salad for lunch. Beginning to get over it, so might replace one of yog/eggs with salad in the near future. Or not. Weekends tend to get a bit ad-hoc. Not as organised as I'd like to be.
  11. Sugar cravings are a problem when you start - but they do pass with time. However, if you 'cheat' you tend to restart them, so is probably better not to cheat in the long run! (Erm, this is definitely 'Do as I say not as I do..." )
  12. Thank you chaps. I'm off to make a hot toddy... frikken snot siekte. Throat is on fire.
  13. That today I could see the air that I breath - urgh...
  14. If you want the true Opinel experience, you need the carbon steel blade. Takes a bit of a mental shift not to have a nice shiny blade tho. Edit: the only reason I have one was that there was one at the checkout of the local hardware store for R99 and I thought 'Bugger, that's for nothing' and bought it. I can't say I was particularly convinced for the first week or two, but it has grown on me. I'll now carry it over any other common pocket knife - it's light and and has a wicked edge.
  15. Yeh - the first time you see just how quick a clean Opinel blade can rust it's pretty alarming. I just leave a layer of oil on it - not fussy about the source.
  16. Maybe, maybe not. I'd argue about it being hard to get an edge on them - I just use a grind wheel thing I was recommended at Sharper Edge which leaves a lethal edge. I've learned to keep it locked shut in my pocket after nearly losing a thumb. I rate that carbon steel way better than stainless for an edge. I do think it flexes too much when you really lean on it tho. But it's light, and I hate heavy things in my pockets, so I'll happily live with it's quirks.
  17. Yep - that is actually the ultimate knife, but probably not so much anymore with screw cap wine bottles. I've also donated a couple to the airport. Burns my ass.
  18. I think Discovery Vitality is now poked. I had the Vitality Health screen thing done and everything fell into the 'good' level except for cholesterol (which was 5.4 vs a 'good' level of 5 (which we know will happen) and they tell me my vitality age is 2 years older than I am... they need to pull their game together!! Me Target Blood pressure 128/75 mmHg Less Than 140/90 mmHg Weight 76.0 kg Height 1.83 m Body mass index 22.7 18.5 - 25 Total cholesterol 5.4 mmol/l Less Than 5 mmol/l Random glucose 5.4 mmol/l Less Than 7.8 mmol/l Waist circumference 82.0 cm Less Than 102.0 cm Fruit and vegetable intake 5 - 9 servings per day At least 5 fruit and vegetables daily Physical activity 330.0 minutes of exercise per week 150 minutes per week Smoking status Never smoked No smoking!
  19. Opinel. Light weight for size - don't know it's there.
  20. Out of interest, does anyone know of a LCHF friendly cardiologist in Gauteng...?
  21. Used to ride from about Std 3. Bike sheds - do schools even have bike sheds any more...?
  22. And you'll be faster downhill on a heavier bike. By at least 3s / km. Edit. And can you take any study that does not include the effect of mass on the couch when you take the pic seriously..!?
  23. Having just replaced my eggbeaters with Shimano 520's for an 80g penalty.... I feel better. Thanks.
  24. Yep, 100%. My wife has been threatening to do the full lipids thing on me for a while now. I should just do it.
