Garmin will not replace the battery and doubt you will find a replacement anywhere in SA. I have 3 Garmin soft straps in a box that have been rinsed, washed every 7 sessions and are all dead. They vary in usage.. from lasting 3 years to just over a year before they where not working. Currently using a Garmin strap for may forerunner and it has been a year and a half but still working fine. Look after it anally... The polar soft strap is over 2 and a half years old and is used a lot more and in conjunction with the Garmin Edge unit. Gets thrown in the cupboard often wet and still dripping with sweat... Gets showed with when i remember.... Keeps on ticking... I personalty believe the polar soft strap to be the hardier equipment.. and cheaper replacement option IMO.

If a new battery does not get you sorted... Consider replacing with a R250 Polar soft strap. Clip your Garmin unit onto the Polar strap. The Garmin strap itself is renown for giving problems.

Personalty, I think this sticking is due to gunk buildup on the piston that just makes the slide action of the piston and barrel worse over time. Not Ideal but for the M785 I would do a full mineral oil change as often as possible. To the peeps that had the failure.... Did you use Shimano mineral oil only or another makes / weight? Would be interesting to see if it may be a an issue with the breakdown of either oils or not. I used 10w and 5w oils and only after the failure have I tried using only Shimano....so will see what happens over time.

BikeWhisperer also gave me the advise on this fix and works a treat.
