  1. you are popular with the chicks.......
  2. invitation or warning?
  3. wait until he gets puncture, he will look for weeks for the tube...........
  4. I cannot help myself, I just cannot stop adding to this drivel. There are many aspects that need to be covered when judging a frame. Comfort, stiffness, dampening, Responsiveness, weight ext. Now each of these are important and tend to negate the other. To achieve the perfect balance you can "play" with a number of variables, such as build material (and mixes thereof), geometry, "butting" or reinforcing and molding of a frame, and componentry. A carbon frame can be built to be less comfortable than an alu frame, because responsiveness, weight and stiffness are more important (this is true of pro bikes). An alu bike with slack angles can be "Softer" than a carbon frame. However, as a rule carbon can acheive a better mix than alu anyday, however steel still seems to trump on comfort still. So when buying a bike one needs to first decide what you need and then buy the appropriate frame. For race snakes carbon is King, for recreation steel may be best, but Alu will be lighter and cheaper. For touring steel is the only option (personal opinion of course). To compare build material without being specific about the particular frame is really irrelevant. You need to say X frame vs Y frame, rather than carbon vs alu v steel vs titanium vs carbon/alu mix ext.
  5. Okay, I have a solution, cycle on the pavements, and get at the motorists when the become pedestrians. "Oops sorry, I did not recognise you when you aren't wearing a car."
  6. the quickest way for this to work is for the metro/government to provoke an incident and then arrest and jail the driver that disobeyed the law. In that way word will get around and people, fearing jail or a fat fine will be more cautious. Punishment is a requirement for compliance.
  7. research in the UK indicate that motorist give the most distance to cyclists in baggy shorts, pink shirts and pony tails. They believe women on bicycles are dangerous.
  8. and good steel and titanium frames seems to outside your hobby...........
  9. That has been cleaned up a lot, you go right and cross the stream in the "forest" and not at the fence.
  10. The problem is that somehow car drivers does not want to leave the lane when overtaking a bicycle, although the law expects them to do so. Also they don't want to slow down either.
  11. roadies. you gotta love them

    XX 1

reality is "horse for course". If you are planning XC racing on reasonable level ground XX1 is king, however if you are touring with kit for 3 days the old 3 x9 or 3 x10 set up with a large cluster range is recommended. The more varied the terrian the more gears you need. I cannot see anyone except the pro's using a XX1 on the Sabie experience. It may be cost effective to bring back the old 2x5 combination with a mother of all chains?
  13. A politician on the side of cyclists. His personal experience may convert him into a cyclist activist for our cause.
  14. But there are no cyclists to account for his erratic behaviour. How dare you provide the cycling revolution with a "black swan"... All motorists are angels.
  15. kudo's to silverback, the German/South African/Chinese carbon bicycle frame company. Great service normally indicates a great product
  16. Effectively, as logic, common sense, and proper planning has evaded society for so long, cyclists have become so threatened that they have developed a strong sense of solidarity, which far exceeds normality. Cyclists are presented as a group that parades on a battlefield of caranage every day, not knowing when the next bumper will be his/hers. This breeds a sense of comradary with others in the same situation. Individual action (like obeying the rules of the road) do not protect the cyclist. As a result the only means of survival is to create "strong special interest groups" to address the problems at a political level. It is only a matter of time for a political party or charasmatic to discover this already formed and coherent consituency. When this happens, all the ingredients for a cult or revolutionary movement are in place. Rich people to pay (recreational cyclists) leader to articulate downtrodden to up lift ( commuter cyclists) an oppressor which must be defeated (motorists) and a world to save (go green)
  17. A total analysis of the article would be labourious, boring and effectively show that the amount of logical flaws, broad generalisations and total disregard for reality makes the text irrelevant. This said, it is a important artifact of the mythology that is held to be true by motorists. It always facinates me that these motorists are so concerned about our cyclists safety. So much so that the project the solution to "our" problem, away from any libility or action from their part, onto the cyclists sholders exclusively. You cyclists would be probably safer if you were not allowed on busy roads. You cyclist would be safer on the pavements, You cyclists should obey the rules of the road. This sublimation of problem and solution absolves the motorist of any responsiblity towards the cyclist as a road user. Effectively removing them from that catergory of citizen totally. This thereby allows the motorist to colonise the entire tar estate of the country and confidently claim that cyclists are out of place objects, obstacles and hinderances to the smooth running of society. Something that should be removed, flattened. If the motorist were honest in their concern for "us cyclists" they would change their behaviour and treat the flimsy 6.9kg peice of carbon the same way the treat a 10tonne truck, with respect. Then when the cyclist "misbehaves" the motorist will be defensive in action and not aggressive in Rhetoric. But as they are protected by a cage of steel and a prison of prejudices, their words and actions are no more than a comfort blanket, to exorise their guilt every time they encounter a cyclist.

    Archery.

aaw shucks, it was a great pic and this thread is stoopid without pics.
  19. In road running the amounts are definitely less. Marketing is done by pamphlets, word of mouth and a published race calendar (which is managed by ASA and the unions). Every runner knows the calander and peer pressure within the club strucrure ensures a high turnout for league races. Entries. On line entries are done by entrytime.co.za and thay add their cut onto the entry fee (R6) per entry. However most entries are taken at the local running shop, the club or by club volunteers on the day. Cost to organiser =R0. Takings for club R160 000? Marshalling: The metro takes their cut which can be anything from R10 000. However the rest is done by club members. Operations: Medical support must be provided. Security is provided by car guards who accept donations (R5-R10 per car). Prizes. Road running is an amateur sport so the prizes are small R10 000. Conclusion: Road running is cheaper because the admnistration costs are less because in most cases most of the work is done by club volunteers and the profits go to the club. Secondly, runners are self ceding, so entries are much easier to manage. Lastly, the average runner wants to run, where as the average cyclist wants a Tour de France experieince in every race, and is willing to pay for it.
  20. the offiial hub standpoint is that you the cyclist were somehow to blame for his aggression. Were you not perhaps a roadie that cycled in large peletons and three abreast in your previous life? It is about kharma really. In the eyes of mr Fatso, you are the embodiment of all that is bad in cycling. The fact that you refused to cower down and be subservient to his enticement, but had the gall to revolt against his domination of the road only made it worse. Being unable to intimidate you with the bulk of his vehicle, he reverted to the last bastion of oppression, that of physical violence. Being unable to "Biff you one" in front of witnesses he did the next best thing, a lot of alpha male posing and posturing. (This is a natural animal reflex). In the end his rage was not against you personally, but rather against everything cycling.
  21. The reasons are plenty full: Road running: 10km = R40 21km=R50 42km=R120 Trail running: 10km=R85 15km=R120+ 25km=R150+ Multi stage can be as much as R795 CyclingMTB: 25km=R120
  22. good for Crezane. I really appreciate the efforts she and Fredi Pienaar are doing for cyclists in Pretoria
  23. I was reading Umberto Eco's "Faith in Fakes". He has interesting things to say about American culture: "two typical slogans that pervade American advertisingThe first, .... ...., is "the real thing"; the second, found in print and heard on tv, is "more". ....the American imagination demands the real thing and, to attain it, must fabricate the absolute fake; where the boundaries between game and illusion are blurred. In "holy madness" another author points out that America is still willed to live in an age of Romanticism, where myth and legend are intermingled with facts to create a history of emotion, heroics and hyper reality where everything is morepatriotic, more epic and more compelling.
  24. so was LA's seven TdF wins. It all evens out LA vs CENA. Title fight for the biggest fake.
  25. and the majority of cyclists who commute?
