    Breedtsnek?

You guys riding there this coming weekend (9 & 10 Jan)? Also need to get some serious base in.
  4. My current insurer wanted R300 pm to insure a R16k road bike and then I'd still have to cover the MTB - sounded too expensive to me. What kinda prices are you guys paying?
  5. Bump
  6. Slowbee - Iv'e been to Arran Brown a couple times and he is brilliant. He's not as scientific and does not use lazers or the computrainer, but he does check your riding style and all the necessary angles etc. He also tries to work with what you have and does not tell you the bike is the wrong size and that you need to buy a new one. I think he charges about R450 per a fitting, but I may be wrong. < ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">< name="ProgId" ="Word.">< name="Generator" ="Microsoft Word 12">< name="Originator" ="Microsoft Word 12"><> Physical Address: 179 Beyers Naude Drive Silhouette House Northcliff, Johannesburg Telephone: 072 566 2925 Email: arran@cyclefit.co.za
  7. Thought I'd see if anyone had any interesting ideas... I am recovering from a couple knee surgeries and thus while I'm allowed to train on a stationary bike, my doctor insists I can't go on the road, let alone MTB. I have a spinning bike, but I'd like to figure out a way to measure my performance and improvement/rehab. Is there anything I could use that's not too costly since weight etc. is not an issue?
  8. I never use my iPod on the road, but I do enjoy using it when riding some of the longer MTB marathons as it helps me get into a rhythm and avoid boredom. I can understand why people are against them, but if used responsibly they're fine. I make sure I can always hear what's going on around me. It's like saying you should ban car radios because drivers need to concentrate on the traffic and hear sirens etc.
  9. I came across ROAG last week for the first time when I was looking to enter for Karkloof. I registered in 3 minutes, no hassle. I then read through their stuff and saw Club Roag. What a win! I won't go into all the factors already mentioned, just to say that I agree completely that clubs that add value will retain all the members that make use of their services and those clubs that don't will lose the members merely using them to get licensed - like me. What I don't get is the golf club argument. I am a member of one of the bigger golf clubs in Joburg and I pay 10-15x more than it would cost me to be a member of a cycling club, but I use the club and its facilities extensively. If I only wanted to be handicapped I would join a vitual club, but then I would struggle to get a game on weekends or have to play far from home etc. The virtual clubs have their place and the actual clubs (Gardener Ross, Eagle Canyon, Pebble Rock...) make substantial use of them to suplement their membership base while they are establishing themselves. No course should feel threatened by a virtual club, because you cannot play golf on a virtual course - Only Monks Cowl and Port St Jonhs (for example) where many people join for the handicap alone and have never been to the club. The point is: If you want a hadicap only - join a vitual club. If you want to play golf regularly and have access to the facilities - join a club. Similarly: If you only want to be licensed - join a virtual cycling club like ROAG If you want to participate in club rides, have support on training rides and races, participate in teams - join a decent cycling club. Each has their place.
  10. Sorry, what's the duty on a Polar or Garmin?
  11. Seen as you guys brought this up - anybody know of someone semi-decent in this profession in Northern Joburg? I just need someone to take out a couple small dents and scratches next week while I'm away.
  12. If Bob and his mates aren't allowed to print Rands, then this will have little effect on SA, but why would he allow that as, if he cannot print Rands, he cannot pay his army etc. and then loses control.
  13. OK, so what's the best price I can get some new EA70s for and from whom?
  14. I'll definitely be able to identify these guys. Is it Sandton or Randburg SAPS?? I have spoken to Inspector Van Heerden a couple times recently. Should I contact him or does someone else have a person that I should speak to?
  15. I think the new bike park is a great idea, but what's stopping us from turning the Spruit (at least sections of it) into a "park"? More than just a bike park, somewhere where people can MTB, run, walk their dogs, picnic etc, but safely and with peace of mind. All we need is some private security and some police cooperation. Residents in the area and users can contribute on a voluntary basis and we can raise some corporate sponsorship. Or am I just smoking my socks?
  16. Look, I hadn't been aware of the recent attacks and so wasn't ultra cautious. I ride past many pedestrians on the Spruit, most step off the path and I thank them as I pass. I was heading South towards the 12th avenue bridge and had to slow right down to go through the little ditch near where they did all the work on the pipes. (it's right by the bridge, so unless you do the old detour and cross through the traffic on 12th, you don't have an option but to go under the bridge.) They were walking towards me and it appeared as if they were stepping out of the way for me to pass, but as I got to within 2m of them they looked at each other and drew their knives and started screaming. They grabbed hold of my bike and pushed me off and tried to pull the bike away while my right leg was still clipped in and I was on my back. I unclipped and they demanded my shoes, helmet etc. I would say that they walking up and down looking for a good opportunity and took it when they saw it.
  17. Sean, let me know if there is something I can do to help - with the cops etc. - this is a great facility that I'm really am passionate about protecting. Cheers Ryan
  18. Red plastic bottle cage, Knog Saddle bag, broken Cateye mount, Brontrager seatpost etc.
  19. Hi Hubbers On Sat 11 October I became the third victim in 24hrs (according to Sandton Police Station) of an such attack. Two guys armed with knives caught me by surprise and pushed me to the ground and demanded my bike, helmet, sunglasses, shoes and cell phone ( which I didn't have). It was right by the 12th Avenue bridge and I had almost stopped to get through the little ditch where the pipes were dug up earlier this year. After they fled, I ran onto 12th Ave and flagged down a guy in a 4x4. We gave chase North toward the N1 along the Spruit and caught up to the one suspect who dropped my helmet and glasses etc. (The guy in the 4x4 still has these and I have no way of contacting him.) I then followed the other suspect who had my bike up the bank and along the N1 South, heading against traffic. I flagged down a second motorist, Graham Mc Cormac of Impi Teak in Rivonia. Graham was exceptionally helpful as he reversed along the N1 and drove the wrong way down the Rivonia onramp. the suspect continued North along the N1 South while we tried to ride ahead and return to cut him off. He had unfortunately left the N1 by this stage and we lost the trail. Thanks very much to Graham and the first motorist for being truly helpful Samaritans. Stuff that was taken: Red Merida TFS 800D hardtail Cammo-coloured Fox Helmet Red Execustar Shoes Addidas Sunglasses. I got a really good look at these guys as I was chasing them down and would be able to identify them. My concern is that because I chased them down (in instinct) the next time they try this tactic, the might try and disable the victim(s) so that they won't have a repeat. Please be very cautious as this seems to be a common occurrence at the moment. We need to take action to clean up the Sruit as it's a wonderful facility that all should be able to use in a relaxed and carefree manner. Cheers Ryan
