  1. So what is the difference between a road helmet and a mtb helmet? Mtb helmets have a little visor. Is that it? With road bikes your speed is higher...so maybe ventilation less important considering that the speed will ensure air throughput?
  2. I like to spin at around 85 rpp and for climbs around 90. When I come up the back Breeds Nek from the Shebeen I saw that I cant quite get there... even at granny gear. (2x10) I do suffer from knee pain the day after when I start grinding gears that is why I started spinning more. Also I've found it works better - my performance bottleneck is not energy/cardio but leg endurance so I try to spare the legs over those long rides with lots of climbing. The only discomfort I have in a ride is a bit of lower backpain on those 100 km rides with steep climbing thrown in, and my hip will burn on the climbs at the flexors. So I started wondering if I was running too long cranks? The bike comes standard with a 175. Unfortunately - by body is not standard. 173 tall with a leg length of 78,79 cm . When I troll the google the recommendations seems to come out to: 170 168 164 165 167.5 So basically 2 x 170 and 2 x 165. But then again all of these articles seems to be for roadbikes and there is a general view that for the same person your mtb will be 5 mm longer. There are also some view on the net that people cant really feel a diff on 5 mm. 1 cm yes but not 5 mm. So what's the jury say? 165, 170 or stay the same?
  3. Of course I'm serious about it. Same as all the other ridiculous posts I've made on the Hub :-) Id still like to know. Man's got to have some unpractical dreams as well
  4. Does not have to last for training rides...just special days and holidays

  6. N Farms will be DRY. Even if it rains a bit say 5 mm on Sat.
  7. NF drains exceptionally well...I predict with great confidence and my reputation as a weather sangoma :-) that it will be dry.
  8. Let me rephrase - With the upgrade and the SW...will you see you power readings? If so - then basically the only diff between the iFlow and IVortex is that the iVortex is wireless...and can add more resistance for training?
  9. Does the iFlow give power data back the the Software (Catalyst) The Vortex does but I cant see on the website if the Flow does... Sales guy at the shop says no...but Id like a hubber opinion.
  10. Look - at least he did not ask what wheel size he must get...
  11. So after reading yet another book on cycling this part I don't get, this book, and others say that you must eat like 3-4 hours before a race. My understanding was always that my leg muscles would be refilled during the night, so we only have to fill up blood sugar levels. Now If I eat a bar, or a gell...I can FEEL the energy within 15 minutes....Im pretty sure that if I don't do something about that energy soon that it will start making fat. So why there long prescriber time periods? 3 hours? When I train I will eat first thing when I wake up. Usually 1 hour before Im riding, maybe 2. ??
  12. This is what the NF 50 km Black route look like : http://www.strava.com/activities/96565742
  13. The 50 is tougher than one you think....its flat and very fast the first 30 km. Then the grassy windy single track start and if you have burned all your matches at this point you are gonna have a poor last 10 km. I think a sub 3 hours is very reasonable if you are a dedicated week-end warrior doing 100 km a week, I dont know about a 2h30. It not technical, there are a few WTF black pieces but its short - just push... And of course - its nice and green and fantastically pretty pass the dams.
  14. I hate those posts that says ' Hi Im a newbie and Im super excited and what is the best bike'? And now Im doing the same...o well here goes I want a road bike to compliment my MTB training...now I haven't really got a clue what I'm looking for - I don\t know what I'm meant to be looking for. This is what I do know: 1. This is to replace my 100 km MTB rides..so it will be a bike for long haul riding...5/6 hour rides 2. Comfort is far more important than speed...this is not my racing bike...the mountain bike is 3. I don't mind if people snigger at my ride from a brand point of view, but I would mind if they downright burst out laughing. The snigger squad may stop sniggering after hour 4... 4. My mtb is a medium, i'm 175 'tall' 5. My fighting target weight is 79 kg...I don't think ill ever drop under this cause I love my braaivleis seconds too much 6. Thinking second hand as well 7. Thinking 10 k - 15 k budget ...if I dig it then I will splash out on a new Trek Madone So - what must I look for? Specific bike models that suite this description?
  15. I have a SRAM X0 2x10 on my Scott Spark Pro. Is there any technical reason why I cant swap out the small blade for an even smaller one, and keep the big blade the same? Currently upfront I have :Sram Carbon S-2210 GXP PF, Carbon crankarm, 38Ax24A T The cassette is a Sram PG 1070, 11-36 T Just in case its relevant: Rear Derailleur Sram X.0 carbon long cage, 20 Speed Front Derailleur Sram X9, DM S3, dual pull
  16. Ill try the ice thing thanx guys
  17. Guys and girls What would you say it best to get the stiffness, heaviness and downright pain (especially climbing stairs) out of your legs if you klapped it the previous day on your bike? 1. Do nothing - full rest 2. Very slow cycling - say spinning 30 minutes slowly 3. Walking 3-5 km 4. Anything else?
  18. PM send with Strava URL for both
  19. Im interested in doing the Modders night races. Anyone want to recommend a light which does the trick? What is important? A focused beam or a broad spread? I see products advertised from 80 lumens to 800 lumens...when is it enough? Which products does have a battery pack that can fit in your bottle cage? Hopefully I can find a light that wont cost R5000.
  20. till you hit the buy button
  21. ive never had it with cycling but i had it badly with other sports. my conclusion was that it was caused by a combination of pressure and sweat. take the pressure off a bit by looseing the shoes a bit. wear socks with extra padding on the bottom. wash your feet before you train and put cream on before you put your socks on. put cream on your feet before you go to bed at night. do your shoes have enough ventilation holes?
  22. Different sets of shoes?
  23. im running x0 2x10. when i go back from the shebeen to breeds nek i need all the grannies i can get so will i loose any gears on the lower end? not too worries about top end speed geara as i very seldom use that on long rides
  24. ag ***. this again...not the guy so called doping..but the guy that takes vicks then then gets taken to the gallows. the real issue here is that the people who makes and implement the rules are creating jobs for themselves. keep the testing to the top athletes and keep it for drugs that actually really makes a performance difference. or ban other chemicals like water and bananas and cramp pills and gells because man...those things makes all of us lot faster. Should we test people who are fun riders middle of the pack results regardless of whether you can see the deca running out their ears? Should we test people coming in the top for medication that has a theoretical 0.0001% improvement? leave the tests for the top athletes and stop wasting the tax payers money ...and make the tests for roids and epo only
  25. ive landed there with a paraglider once...it was quite interesting. one guy was on a bicycle. he was lile the main dude as he was the only one who could ride a bike. eat that
