  1. As the saying goes "careful what you wish for" Boy did you make a rod for your own back here. So you better produce results I would get your boss to buy buy in to your program and progress on your goals if you go for it so that he sees that you are doing some stuff and not just parking easy. That way he sees that what you said was serious and that you really are committed to improvement. Even get it formalized in some sort of agreement with him. And have a copy of that letter lodged in your HR file so if you ever come under fire for it you can show you agreed it and have results. Happy pedaling. Cause now you cant back out.
  2. Personal Favorite at the moment is Redemption Song. Should have a space for some Marley verse on that machine: "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy, 'Cause none of them can stop the time"
  3. So I am not sure if this is the correct place but here goes. Here are some questions and seeking advice. I changed my whole eating pattern based on this thread and removed carbs from my diet. No pasta or potatoes any more, and wife has done the same. I am not religious about it but will not eat carbs if I can avoid it I had a bad day on Saturday - i had changed my drinks mix from normal 32GI to Energade. on Saturday after my normal 40kms around N Farm and a drink of Glutamine and also Rehidrate, at about 11 am I had a massive sugar dip and was craving carbs as well as anything to fill the hole. I ate sugar and was scarfing pies just to fill the gap. That afternoon i was very lethargic and lacked energy. Sunday i was really lethargic. No energy, legs leaden, so i didn't ride. Actually was exhausted. I had the idea that my glycogen stores were totally depleted. I had one glass of wine on Sunday afternoon and felt completely trashed and sleepy. I am now perplexed and actually worried I may be borderline diabetic but have been tested that I am not. So what can be the problem here? The leanings: 1.) I had sushi the night before and no real carbs for breakfast so i was low on carbs before i did the ride. Not a good idea. 2.) 32 GI seems to be a greater drink that I had imagined. 3.) Can the glycogen depletion resulting from a sugar bonk result in ongoing lethargy and a feeling of no energy for up to 48 hours, including muscle soreness? I am perplexed and disappointed in the fact that I am pretty unfit and trying to get back in to shape but am struggling. And I am tossing Energade as a drink....
  4. Been sitting on the sidelines on this one as it developed, cause I know that the behavior here is wrong so what I am saying here is not sanctioning this at all but rasinig another question as i had a similar experience on Saturday morning which i was mulling over. What happened: The ABSA development kids were out there with me on the single track near the Jukskei. They are fit and weigh nothing but I could hang with them on the single track on the twisties and in fact was way faster than them in the corners - age and experience versus youthful exuberance. Twice the one kid who shot past me on the uphill overcooked it in to the corner and i passed him again. Too much speed in the tight sections and to be frank they are riding hard tail klunkers against my hardware, it was unlikely he could corner as fast as I could. However on the uphills they would catch me and yell "Track". After the third kid did this I told him that he needs to learn to overtake. Am I being a grumpy old fart? I never hesitate to overtake someone if I am fitter than them and faster than them. Especially if I have made enough noise to ensure they know I am there. Normally on singletrack. My theory is that these kids are going to go on and race and in a race they will be faster than some folks, and you don't overtake in a race by yelling track. You have to beat the person in front of you.To do that you have to overtake. So i think that the whole idea of asking for track when you are behind someone is a bit crazy. Just overtake them. Overtaking is a skill that has to be developed as well. Its not easy. It requires planning and thought to execute an overtaking move and I have often screwed it up. In a race it is often challenging and if you haven't tried to get it right in practice settings you will likely screw it up. Braking later to get to a corner first, block passing or sliding a bike are all techniques that take a lot of learning. Maybe I rode dirt bikes too long, but you always held your line and the oke behind had to pass you.
  5. Wow my wife will love you for this and for the free advertising on themomix. She sells them. They are available locally and have a whole ecosystem set up around them. I bought one after a Spanish mate of mine whom I cycled with raved about it. Long story short my wife got involved and she now sells them for exactly the reason you mentioned. They are awesome - can mill wheat in to flour etc etc. I was making my own Tahini over the weekend. No other mixer I have ever had could do that properly and get it smooth. You will see them being use din Masterchef locally and internationally for sauces etc. Highly recommended. Like you say not cheap but made by ze germans so you will need to give it away to a relative in your will cause they last forever.
  6. HI need help. I have a mate coming from the USA on weekend of 18 October that wants to ride up and over Chappies and do a bit of a road ride. I need to hire a good road bike for him. He is a big guy - about 6foot plus a handful of inches so probably a large. Any ideas of who could help?
  7. So OT: I had a conversation the Club Cycle lab folks and was wanting to rejoin the club, however was embarrassed by corporeal bulk at the moment and that I would need XL or XXL cycle gear (which was not the case in the past). So I asked Ali McLean if they made the kit in those sizes. Her response was that about 70% of the kit ordered is XL and that the general run of the mill guy needs larger sizes. Buffaloes of the world unite.
  8. Agreed, Invariably if i saw a line and wanted to hit it I was always thinking "will this break the wheels, and will i make a flying W as I plough the ground with my face after the front or rear has collapsed?". With the ARch EX's I have faith that they will hold up, so ride a lot more aggressive. I am over this weight weenie thing on the bikes, mainly because the only lightweight thing involved in my riding is the bike.
  9. Clutch derailleur. Problem solved.
  10. I am at 110kgs and do get in to the air every now and then! and I pretzeled my rear wheel that Ruan Deysel built. No issues with him in fact he probably meant it held together longer. I was always riding them carefully, which probably meant I was not hitting the things that I liked to do. I went to Arch EX and must say I don't feel any difference but I am more confident on them. So don't waste your money and ride a rim that you know is not rated for your weight. Build some strong wheels that you know will always last. My 2 cents worth
  11. Like not everyone is this super handyman. Some people are born with 2 x left hands and no mechanical aptitude. Believe me I have seen it on the trail. Me I have all the tools but not enough time. Have done it all except fork servicing. Its all pretty simple but you may need patience and time. I don't have a lot of the latter. Get a good relationship going with your LBS. I almost did an interview with the current guy whose owns and runs the LBS I use and briefed him how I wanted my bikes serviced. Something along the lines of if you see an issue fix it, even if its expensive, as I want the thing to hum like a Zephyrs diff. I hate stuff wrong and I cant stand things going wrong when I just had the bike repaired. And the other thing I have done is stuck with him through thick and thin. There have been moments where the service was cr@p but I pointed it out and have had it rectified. Normally when they had some junior hired help working the shop. Seems to work for me.
  12. I am in the company of people who remember things I have forgotten. Brings back memories. Robbie's stage wins, Greg's world cups and world championships etc all awesome including Burrey's achievements But this year SA Cycling really arrived on the world map has been this year: Impey yellow jersey, Froome putting Wiggo in his place and Greg's World Championship, and then the saddest as well with the loss of Burrey who could have gone on to become a legend. Just as an aside - what about Anke Erlank at the Olympics ? Crashing on the way to a medal.
  13. No - you will see I blame it on being fat, old and unfit . I am willing to accept my limitations. Anyway did some reading after the posts and in fact it is the caffeine in carbonated drinks that dehydrates you - so the medical quack that gave me the advice was being a bit liberal with the truth. I just struggle with fizzy aspartame flavored drinks. They taste cr@p at the best of times - never mind when you are knackered. But you live and learn.
  14. Yes great event - sorry no issues with the event. Just a suggestion.... Should have made that more clear. Aquelle does not sit well. As I said - fat and unfit so needed a water table stop at the end....
  15. So I dragged my fat and unfit body around N Farm today. I managed the 55 km route, but I get to a water table and all they have is sparkling flavored waters because Aquelle is a sponsor. WTF? I know it's not a serious event but all I wanted was a quick cup of water or an Energade. Can someone please explain to these corporate sponsorship people that carbonated drinks actually can dehydrate you.
  16. Depends if you want grip or longevity. Schwalbe Racing Ralphs and Nobby Nics (Front and Rear) in 2.25 or more with the Snakeskin. Grips like snot on a blanket, but don't last long. Maxxis are good for longevity, but the grip levels cant be compared
  17. This is what I am lusting after - just cant get my head around the price yet. Waiting for Shimano hydraulic group set on Ultegra DI2. https://www.lynskeyperformance.com/store/road/bikes-and-frames/cyclocross/procross-models.html drool drool
  18. wow - you okes have too much time on your hands. I was browsing around one day and read on the Santa Cruz site under the technical tips where they discussed this and they recommend not washing too much or too often i.e. not every week. And if you do, then hose it down and leave it Kleen green and hose after the end of a weekend ride. Problem solved.
  19. wow - now that is worth a lot of money - treasure it.
  20. buy 180mm rotors and forget about the brakes.
  21. Having owned and ridden both: 1.) Hogwash that only Specialized can service Specialized. Josh at Cyclists has done my pivots on all my Specialized bikes. Only shock service centers with nitrogen filling abilities can service the brain rear shock. The Fox service interval is much tighter (30 hours on the new Float 29er). So the fork may be able to be serviced at your LBS, but chances are it will be getting serviced lots more. 2.) SC's VPP suspension especially in the LT forms has a much plusher feel as a result of the activation ratios. It squats down more. Lovely feel to the bike. 3.) Specialized is a race snake bike. SC is a smile factor bike. Having said that the only bike I lust after (I have an S Works Epic) is the SC Tallboy LT2. I would do better riding the LT2 as I am more of a fun rider and the Specialized is a race machine. The finish on the Specialized is more bling though. INternal routing of cables - ask the Niner boys about the hassles that can bring. Are you buying it to ride or put on the wall?
  22. Put q20 on those brakes mate, and you'll find yourself a little more bos, Piet
  23. I often used to grind lock rings in a bench grinder to get enough chain clearance when running 11 T sprockets at the rear. The silver washer can also get in the wya of the chain side plates and cause irregular jumping. Simply fit the cassette with the lock ring in place and check how much clearance there is between the chain and the lock ring when on the 11T cog. undo and grind a bit off until it clears. 2 minutes worth of work and problem solved.
  24. Boat tail 1750 Spider. Now that is something I always thought I would own someday. Nice. What would one of those set you back in Ronts these days?
