  1. Can anyone give more info on this race.  I know very little about what a recce entails and how it will pertain to this race.  Should I carry takkies with me - like will I need to walk/hike/bundu bash somewhere?

    Any advice?

  2. Have F3 grey, wear daily for the last 6 months, triathlons events, daily training 6 days a week, day to day watch, not a scratch on the screen so not sure you need.

The screen doesnt scratch agreed BUT the grey outer bezzel (hope that is the right term) scuffs VERY easily showing the silver metal under...  Quite disappointed about this

  3. What makes you say that?

Tried most of the stuff. Taste didn't enjoy and made me feel quezy. Also the gels are very runny and you supposed to take them every 20 minutes - doesn't give me the feelingg of sustanance if that makes sense.

Just my opinion - I'm sure loads of people like the stuff

  4. MK, Agree... I was there Friday afternoon, also a little bit disappointed. I had a chat with of the girls working there and she said that on Thursday they had a lot of stock. Luckily I got 3 super cool Tshirts and a bright yellow cap.

I'm 1.84m 86kg, tried on a few sizes, but L is definitely correct Merrel size for me (even the shirts from last year) I will happily order my "L" online, without any worries. Not sure about duties..

T%he thing is the stuff you ordering online isn't Merrel...  So not sure sizing is as comparable?

  5. Anyone in the know?

SO I was a little disappointed at the IM merchandise on sale - though the Merrel stuff was distinctly average.  I have therefore been looking at the online store but have two uncertainties:

    1)  Size?  Based on chest size it suggest I should buy a small however I am 1.85m tall and have never worn a small anything.  Is this perhaps because it is an American small perhaps that is a South African Medium?  ANyone bought with experience

    2)  Customs - am I correct to assume I am still going to be whacked a big one with customs and duties?

  6. Good luck to everyone. I am drinking 20 vitamin pills per day fearing illness. Both children have the flu so I feel like a prisoner in my own house.

My advice..... make sure everything on your your bike is fastened tightly. Make sure your nutrition is tightened. The road is very rough and you will see many bombs and bottles along the way. Make sure its not yours.....

Weather looks good even though the easterly is blowing (as it stands now)........

Remind me which way do we want the wind to blow / not blow?

Also guys say predictions are for big swells - 2.5m?

I do not know what this means if anythinh

  7. I am exactly the opposite.  I believe if I can end of the race with a 4 hour marathon I have paced myself perfectly.  Since I have changed my focus to a running time I have enjoyed the races so much more.

You can surge many times on the run but you can only blow out once and its over.  Once you blow the rest of the race is a painful drag.

Having said all of the above there are other factors as well namely conditions.  If you feel good, its still early and cool and the wind is not blowing then it could certainly be more advantageous to push hard for a period.

The same goes when you start running at 13h00 and the tar is effectively 40 degrees then its not worth pushing hard until say 14h30 when the worst heat is off....

    So many factors.

I am gonna stand right in front on the swim start (although I suck at swimming) to try and get as far as possible on the bike before the Easterly bitch arrives.

Given the rolling swim start will take 15 minutes to affect in totality - is going nearer the front to gain say an extra 10 minutes worth people swimming over you?

  8. Doing my 5th this year and is also nervous but this is mainly due to the fact that I have put together a really good training campaign.

What works for me in the swim is to really look forward to it.  That nervous excitement of race morning when your feet hit the sand.  Think of how privileged you are to be able to swim the ocean whilst thousands of spectators looks on.  How many people are not in a position to do this.  See it as an amazing blessing to take part.  This is also the only part of the day you will not be overheating so enjoy the cool water.  There are also no rules so you can basically just focus on swimming.

The mistake people make is to fear the water.  Then when the gun goes off its hyperventilation overtime due to the anxiety and the cold water.  Make sure you take a warm up swim.  This is to get used to the water more than anything.  Just go in and splash around - once you breathing have stabilized you are good to line up on the beach.

I hope they add more yellow buoys as they have done in recent 70.3 races as this really helps.

I live inland and only have access to a pool.  The only open water swims I do is at Ironman and due to the above I beat my pool times easily at events.

Ya look I have done 3 half distance swims previously, and although with much anxiety, they did turn out to be (as most people say) the easiest part of the race.  3.8km in the ocean however is still daunting and I will try my best to keep calm and take it slow.  1hr 30min of swimming just seems like a damn long time....

  9. So with only days to go I am gearing up for my first IM...  Must say its been hard to taper - a few days of pulling back and then you feel like you losing fitness and want to do a "hard session" again...

Obviously I feel like I could have trained harder but now it is what it is.  Given its my first one, although I have a sub 13 in mind, I just want to finish foremost.

Is it normal for a "newbie" to be *** scared of the swim?  I am a below average swimmer in terms of speed but have done a decent amount of mileage.  I have however only done 4km swim and might do another this weekend.  All i know is that once I get out of that sea alive I will be a VERY relieved man...
