  1. He might need to be joined by a few others too But I'd rather take them on with something where I'd have the upper hand.... like an IQ test (Oh dear, that could be construed as being very rude and insulting which is something I claimed not to do Pleas take it as the joke it was meant as and don't run to the mods. Reading it another way, I openly admit I'd probably get my ass whipped in a downhill race!)
  2. You understand the word infatuation? I've also come to realise that you would argue with me even if I said ice was cold. So be it.
  3. It must have stopped at Van Reenen's for now though as there is very little happening in Pinetown at the moment. Although I would suggest tying down your small children tomorrow.... I half expect to be woken during the night with howling winds!
  4. You pros do Us plebs still refer to 21, 24, 27 speed... we don't refer to 30 speed a lot as we don't come in contact with them all to often.

    Rugby...

Ha ha, interesting to read about the fans of a certain team now cheering on boring 10 man rugby when they used to be the loudest opponents of it when the Bulls were winning everything with a similar game plan...
  6. I posted all the times on the Critical Mass thread but no harm in doing it here again: Critical Mass - Durban - July Friday, 27 July 2012 at 18:00 Moonlight Mass - Durban Thursday, 2 August 2012 at 20:30 If you are on Facebook then join the Critical Mass- Durban group for all the updates, chat and photos.
  7. Hey, there are two rides every month. Critical mass is the last Friday of every month and the moonlight mass ride is done on the night of the full moon every month. For both we meet and leave from Moses Mabhida Stadium. Here are the next ones: Critical Mass - Durban - July Friday, 27 July 2012 at 18:00 Moonlight Mass - Durban Thursday, 2 August 2012 at 20:30 If you are on Facebook then join the Critical Mass- Durban group for all the updates, chat and photos.
  8. I think we also often assume the hoot is in anger. I had someone hoot the other day and I was about to whip out the angry gesture (yip, us cyclists are as guilty) when I realised the person was actually being friendly and was about to whip out a wave of his own. As much as many cars do have an attitude towards cyclists I am also fully aware of many cyclists having an "I am just as entitled to take up the whole road" mentality, which definitely does not help relations.
  9. I think you answered your own question with the bold part And this is a load of crap. A lot of those doing the hooting and pushing off the road are well educated. As for the culture argument, you've been brainwashed, as have most of us whites by years of "white" education. We have been made to feel that Western culture is true culture... the history of Africa goes back a lot further but is not often recognised by the "western" way of thinking.

    music

I find listening to music while riding a pretty interesting topic. I personally don't do it for the safety reasons and because I like "hearing" my bike. On the roads it obviously poses a few dangers in that you cannot hear vehicles and the like. The same applies to a certain extent on the trails. I was behind someone the other day who was clearly oblivious to my presence as a result of having head phones in. EDIT: If I did it would probably be some proper "old school" rock music like Metallica. I also just noted this is in the gravity section so it might be different for you guys
  11. If you read the post before I think it goes some way to explaining what I feel an "average cyclist" is : Very few cyclists are pros, even less are Burry Stander. So they would not be average. The average rider is riding for fun with the added benefit of getting fit. I am an average cyclist so how is a 1kg weight saving on my bike going to benefit me. It's not. A few of responses from others lead me to believe that they were fully aware of what was meant. By the way Richard Best and Camerons used the word average first, so perhaps grill them as to what they meant as my posts were actually in response to these....
  12. Stumbled upon this and thought I'd share More: http://tribesports.com/blog/7-tour-de-france-facts?zXFj&utm_source=stumbleuponcpc&zQZj
  13. Would you choose that second hand over the new Silverback Alpine for R1750 more? EDIT: I was looking at the groupset but I see now it is carbon. I know it is not all about weight but even then it is only 11.4kg vs 12.4kg.
  14. The disconnect between races in this country is sad. Some have pointed out, and ridiculed, the comments of those on the website referring to the farmer not providing proper transport. Yet on here we have others immediately drawing conclusions about the driver without all the facts. It seems we immediately pick sides based on the presumed race of those involved.
  15. My understanding is that it is a cut off low pressure system that is causing the expected weather.
  16. I agree. Even as recent as a few years back we would not have had constant and instant updates on any strange weather occurrences elsewhere in the world. The fact we hear about every single strange weather event makes people assume it is worse than the norm. Also people have really short memories. Last summer they will claim it was the driest/hottest/wettest in recent memory then they forget in winter and claim the same things the following summer. Nope, very little chance that was the intention. Believe me.
  17. There we go with the prodding again. No doubt if I respond as I'd like someone will start crying about taking a thread off topic and talking crap without for one moment recognising the sad sod who did the prodding...
  18. Are you in Pretoria? The weather I watched on SABC last night showed the heavy rain being over the Eastern Cape today with it spreading over the rest of the country over the weekend. Even then for Pretoria the forecast shows light rain with up to a 50% chance. So that means there is as much chance of it not raining.
  19. I initially got it off the Critical Mass- Durban Facebook page where it had been shared but I'm sure the more responses they get the better. The person who set it up stated that we are welcome to add any suggestions like preferred routes etc so use it to share your thoughts.
  20. Nice one. The more people we can get responding the more likely we are to get some action and recognition of cycling and cyclists.
  21. I won't take this thread off topic but we are free to discuss the current state of the country compared to where it was elsewhere.
  22. Terrible news indeed but these sorts of comments just piss me off....
  23. Let's not twist things again. What I am saying is that the "average" cyclist should really not be worrying about 2kg as what they are hoping to achieve is actually better achieved with the slightly heavier bike. In saying that, of course, the absolute heaviest bike would not make sense as it would dramatically reduce the person's enjoyment of riding. The infatuation with weight by all those other than the pros is just silly. I'll admit to not even knowing the weight of my bike.
  24. But is it not often the opposite? Lighter components may be less durable as a result of the nature of them being made lighter (ie more spaces and holes)? And I always argue about what the average rider is looking to achieve. He is surely not looking to win races but often is looking to get fitter. Surely pedalling that 12kg bike up the hill is going to achieve this quicker than doing so with a 9kg bike?
