  1. What outer diameter is a normal axel? I would imagine if one could turn something fairly easy that fits over a standard axel with an OD of 15mm and the right length? With lips on either side to space and prevent movement? If I may ask. why does Shimano not cater for this?
  2. actualy no idea. They are Giant PXC2 29'er rims. Think it would be "Giant Tracker". Assume they will be a rebrand of another hub?
  3. Hi all, Sitting with a thru bolt front wheel that I want to run on my quick release fork. Are these adaptors readily available and what is the correct name for such item Thanks ps: I realise search will help but not sure what it is called...
  4. hehe. still very green but few things was as much fun freewheeling a trancex on skinny tyres downhill in the Argus past all the road bikes Reached mid 70's if I remember correctly. I do remember my son's eyes popping out of his head when I showed him the max speed on my trip computer
  5. Habana? didnt know Brian had cars V for victory!!
  6. So what would happen if you were to buy a bike and ask the shop to send it over in say three parts? Maybe the wheels in one. The frame with derailers etc attached and then the rest... Save on the full bicycle import duties?
  7. the most perculiar thing is the variations. I am 1.77 and ride two large giants though a medium works as well. I have large's as I got great deals on them . I read above that jcza is 1.74 and rides a small xtc. I have a small XTC 26'er for my 10 year old. Yes too big for him but when I ride it it feels like a bmx. Even with a 100 stem and saddle nicely back. It just does not even remotely fit. Yet I got onto his old GT which was also a small frame and that felt better, even though the toptube is almost an inch shorter. Just thought I would mention this useless info. Dont go on other's sizes. You are your own unique shape

    Bike Size

I think you could get away with either. Also bear in mind a medium GT is like a small Giant. So suppose it depends what bike you have as well. He could be right. As for now I should be riding a medium but I ride a large as I like the stem nice and short and I am shorter than you. But I do realise technically speaking the bike is too big for me. Maybe tell us which bike you have as the sizes differ. A trek is also smaller than a giant for instance (my experience anyways) I have a good mate that races religiously. He is 1.8 and rides a large anthem. He got on my large Trance and got off immediately saying it is set up too small for him So you can make what ever you have fir in reason if you within reason of course. A XS GT will never fit Vic Matfield as to the knees. seet position forward and back and seat height. Here I doubt that, given your length, the bike is too small. Maybe just do the plumbline test to see if your seat is in the right spot forward and back. You can go lower in seat height to a degree and get away with it. It is just less efficient but wont fook up your knees. So again. I cant see the issue. What length stem is on the bike as well? That could also have a impact. A friend of mine once told me (also an avid mountain biker) that if you ride your bike and sit comfortably and look down your handle bar should blank out the front axel. Then it is size wise at least set up nicely for you and the balance should be good as well.
  9. think it really depends where you are going to ride. gravel roads and jeep tracks then nothing will keep up with a 29'r. do some mountaineering and the 26 just seems that but more nimble. horses for courses.
  10. Keep an eye on the classifieds. bargains come up. Gumtree etc. Also keep in mind that if you stick 26'er that you can keep your fork when you upgrade. I would suggest keeping an eye open for a Rockshox Recon Solo Air. great bang for buck and a lovely fork. obviously if you can get the Gold or Race, etc it is better due to the Alu steerer. I am sure you can get away for under R1500 if you wait around. But also keep in mind that you need someone that knows about forks to have a look with you or you need to study up first... Dont buy a lemon!
  11. Had those XT rims on my libirated Trance x1. Have them again on my replacement and still loving them. Very reliable and easier to maintain than a lot of the others out there. Wheels imo is the biggest diffs you can make to a bike. I mean replace the seat post and save 100 grams for R1k. you may as well not eat today and loose 300grams. it's free. Wheels are however rotational mass. few grams = big diffs in manuvarability and acceleration.
  12. x7 looks more like Deore for me
  13. must say I agree.SLX seems great value for money but I realy feel the diffs in XTR shifters and XTR rear derailer. Brakes, go with cheap. I would build groupset as follow. Crank SLX Casette XT Brakes Deore Shifters XTR (if you can afford) - love the way you can upshift multiples in one push Front Derailer XT (only like R50 more than SLX and R100 more than Deore) Rear Derailer XT is good enough but would slap XTR if you can afford. Crappiest cassette with XTR shifters and XTR rear derailer shifts smooth as butter...
  14. Thanks a million! Message on the way
  15. thanks. yes the recon race is a solo air. lovely fork actualy.
  16. Hi CPT Mayhem. not sure at all. The one fox is a silver one so I recon probably slightly older. Maybe 4-6years. The other is a black one so looks like on of the newer ones. Say maybe a 2008/9. The Recon Race cant be old either. It is spotless. So I recon maybe 2009/10.
  17. Thanks Willie. what is the diffs between the new and older style hubs. Asking since I am new to MTB
  18. If we did not run spring loaded rear derailers I would say it makes sense. But it does not unless you mountaineer with the Trance and commute woth the hard tail. I imagine the Trance's cluster is just worn badly?
  19. flat terrain should be even better on your chain life...
  20. at what lenght increase do you replace? .25, .50, .75, etc? I think maybe send me your almost new chain after you replace @ 750km Ooo and another thing. Replace your casette if you havent. A worn casette will wear chains quicker as I understand.
  21. HI All, I have two fox Fseries forks and a rockshox recon race. I am using for a bike build for my son etc. I would like to know if there is a way knowing which forks can go to 120mm without opening them up to see if the have a spacer? Thanks JT
  22. How do you know the chain needs replacement? A tool or the LBS? Or it looks rusty? From what I understand most guys put a chain and cesette on and ride them together untill they start skipping or bad shifting? Which could be anywhere from the 2.5k mark to maybe even 5k?
