  1. lol! with that logic you may as well loose 7kg and ride makro bike with disc brakes . Just wont perform the same But I get where you guys are going. Never been on a steel frame other than a "makro" bike.
  2. but then we are moving away from the thread objective by adding weight where I may as well run suspension then right?
  3. lol! Jip. I can imagine it will nail you on a sinkplaat... But here I think my rearend will be worse for wear than my arms
  4. thanks all! still in two minds. Would love to try one for a bit but I suppose one wont loose the $$. You could always just sell it on again if it aint for you. As to faster in sweeping single track. I can see why. Same reason some motorbike suspension fairs better in corners. Why dont some guys try to turn lockout on in those environments?
  5. I am messing around a bit with 1x setups and was thinking. In the opinion of those that ride a lot. Is weight saving more important than suspension? Reason I ask is I run a hard-tail frame. When I moved to the 1x setup I saved a good 1kg. I immediately felt this when going up hill. Bike just seems to climb easier. Now I am wanting to go to a carbon fork. That will take the bike to < than 10kg in full trim. However going this way will take away the suspension off my arms. How would this affect one in the long run? Anyone running like this and actually riding off road? How does it feel? Do you miss the suspension up front?
  6. My requirements were about the same as yours. I was told by a chap that rides that a lot (on an anthem) that a trance would suite the needs better as it has a more relaxed position and thus you dont have to feel like you are "racing" all the time... I admit I like both frames but the trance is more comfortable (feels a bit slower though - tiny bit) edit: all this I said, I havent ridden a 27 or 29 trance.
  7. Thanks Dusty. have my eye set on it so should be the right option...
  8. Hi guys, just got my new etrex30 and was wondering which maps woudl be the best to use for cycling? Which has the best topographical detail for south africa? free maps would obviously be best cheers!
  9. thanks! that is a cheap solution as I already have a tapered headset. cheers!!!
  10. Think this has to do with a few more factors. When you are right handed your left side is the dumb labour and your right side the fine tune. Turning left you left hand holds the bar (couter steer) and you right hand feathers it (control). also your left foot is "off" the pedal and you right foot in control. For left handed people I believe this will be oposite. I feel that which ever foot/hand you feel more adapt to executing tasks with will be the oposite hand to which you feel comfortable in turning... To change this natural instincts will be difficult. I think learn to kick a rugbyball effectively or something simular with your dumb foot may help in the long run
  11. Hi guys, I need to temporarily run my wifes new frame with a reducer to enable me to use a straight steerer fork in a 1.5inch tapered frame. What is the best oprion to go down this route? Thanks!
  12. absolutely disgusting. all of them should be thrown in jail for 6months at least. Those that stood around as well. Nothing could justify this type ob barbaric behaviour.
  13. bump... anyone? Canone work it out somehow?
  14. Hi guys. just wondering if anyone knows what size rear disc adaptor a KTM Ultra 26inch takes for a 160 Rotor. Looks like it could be a 180 but could be more. Dont want to have to buy a range to see which is right Thanks!
  15. @ Neutralthinking: For me the murder charge should be not because he knocked down the cyclist. Rather because he chose the flee the scene. He chose not to face the results of his actions. So yes he got into his car drunk. He accidently knocked over the cyclist. but he chose to flee. Murder charge.
  16. yeah. would like to know now as well... two of those have XT's on them I also believe it keeps the fork seals oiled and you will spot a leak much sooner this way...
  17. I have had a simular issue before. Messed around with the fd and it went away... Cant remember if I just dailed the barel adjester or if I set the limit screw. But it was a simple fix.
  18. I think some brakes are an issue. I run only Shimano brakes and havent had a problem hanging them like that. But I suppose there is always a first!
  19. My attempt. A couple of bucks and there she blows. Planks will be attached to beams in my new garage. This was just temporary. And notice the foam on the handlebar which kept on imprinting itself on my forehead
  20. Realise they are interchangeble. Question is if the diffs between the Deore and the XTR caliper is in weight and durability only and that the stopping power depends on pads and levers?
  21. reason I ask is I have a set of dual control XT's laying in the cuboard waiting for a set of calipers. I was wondering if it really makes a diffs what calipers I run with it. Was thinking the SLX ones (if CRC ever gets some in stock) as they are nicely priced... Or should I not worry and slap an old set of deore's on there?
  22. Nice thread. Question. is the feel and the upgrade in the caliper or the lever? Meaning older caliper with new lever better than old lever with new caliper?
  23. jirri maar julle ouens kan k@k praat But it makes me want to summarise this whole thread cause almost everyone, bar one or two interesting opinions, share a thread of truth. 29r wheel (same wheel at same pressure) has a bigger contact patch? yes it does. Physics. The 29er wheel has more space for the air to compress into and the contact patch at rest is fractionally larger. How do I prove it? take a small syringe and a big one of the same diameter. Close the nozzle and compress. You can compress the larget one further than the lesser volumed one for the same effort. Finish en klaar. So what. That is why you run a 29 wheel. you are able to have a bigger contact patch that is not bigger width wise, but length wise. Easier rolling over obsticals. Also grips more. But given compression ratios it will also flex more at the same pressure. Flex sideways and front to back. Pure and simple physics. The question here is not if the 20mm axel is stiffer. If implemented correctly physics will once again tell us it is. Why? Why do we use hydro formed tubes on our bike frames. Why do maufacturers go through all the effort? cause the same weight pipe with a larger diameter is stiffer. Period. No arguments on that one. The actual question is if it is worth while upgrading from a QR to a 20mm axel? My opinion. And I have ridden both. If it is going to cost you big money, that you dont have to spend on a upgrade, it is not woth it. If it is cheap then go for it. If you swim in dosh and love to have the best then go for it. But for me it is not worth getting a new fork and a new wheel in my choice with 15mm. Will it make you 2seconds faster over a stage? If you believe it will then it probably will. If you dont extract the 1% increase in stiffness from the front end then maybe not. Will I upgarde? Only when I buy again... I dont challenge for the podium in any cycling event so not worth it to me... my 2c worth... use it dont use it
  24. Apparently the snake sailed away after a while... jee wizz... Contermanskloof. They speculate it a Cape Cobra. seems a bit green for that... But could be I suppose.
  25. wow. I for one think this is a great idea. If we can go on his words. It is waterproof (submerged for a few months and did not degrade) that would be unpaineted I assume. Also fireresitant. Does not have pneumatic tyres so no punctures. Bike weighs 9kg as a whole and may even be given away for free due to the low manufacturing costs and potetial advertising income. Yes the african market is a little tougher but I think this is a great idea.
