  1. if you got the cash go for 705 garmin, it does it all and will give you years of stats. if you want simplicy and dont mind over packed bar, go for separate devices. if you want GPS you can do this with a phone too. with all these devices battery life is an issue on long trips without aux power. good luck
  2. The issue with working with Carbon or any material that takes stress is that they need to be constructed using the optimal method. Loads of carbon parts made to take stress are made in a special machine called an autoclave. this machine reduces air between the weave, creating lateral and structural strength. My opinion, besides the cool factor of making your own stuff, dont mess with something like bars or frames, have you ever had a carbon bar break in a ride, well i have and it's not a pretty sight..... I made some carbon bits for cars, it's hard work for the effort required. good luck if you do go for it let us know.
  3. hey guys, i have installed a Rival crankset with a GXP team BB, English thread. there is about 2 - 3 mm of lateral play once installed and the non drive crank arm is fully tightened. should i add a space between the non drive side cup to reduce this or is it normal. Shimano does not do this please advise?
  4. This thread has been a great read. You dont need to apply rocket science to decide who is right or wrong. in fact what you need is half a brain and an internet connection to google about wheel building. Some think it is an art, some think it is a science, but in more than one place you can find that soldering of spokes at the crossing point has nothing to do with lateral stiffness. JB is correct follow the principles and techniques that apply to lacing and tension along with good quality components and baring an incident with a pothole or major trauma the wheels could last you a lifetime. I have been building my own wheels for 20 years i own "THE BOOK" it's a constant point of reference over the years, i never had a broken spoke or wheel that has malfunctioned on me. IMHO anybody can build wheels, but building them to last is an art.
  5. So my setup is like pro XC race, it's around 10 kg hardtail. the setup is xt rear d lx 9 sp cluster lx crank HG 93 chain i keep breaking the chain, just this one, i have rejoined it twice, it seems to open up and pull the pins out and snap. any ideas?
  6. i think it would be a tough call, if you build a relationship with a bike shop it can be good but if something goes wrong just once you may have to start all over again. IMHO it's best to have 2 or 3 bike shops that can help you out. like for example. i only buy my spares and tools from a certain shop, no value is required, i know what i want at the best price. for servicing though i do all my own work so i only have myself to blame when something goes wrong, i think the majority of issues arrise from this area.
  7. you guys are talking about alot of single track in gauteng, can you please let us know where it is? i am keen to check out Rietvlei and van Gallens
  8. i saw small leb and big lem at the world cup.... you know the one where Greg Minnaar won the DH, they both look well and seem to be in control. Having sat in many long meetings i can personally vouch for the commitment they have to the sport. You don't need to be well known to be good at what you do. It's easy to sit on the side line and comment, but to really pop tall and take responsibility take's real commitment!

  10. So as bizarre as it sounds here is the info and the question. In the early 90's Gold Reef City had some small Penny Farthing style bicycles for hire for kids to ride, i have some pics of me riding one of them so it is true. I am sure i remember they were branded Raleigh. I am looking for some more information? I have a collection of old bikes and i am always looking for new projects for restoration, if you have something really old you trying to get rid of let me know. i have a whole bunch of old school BMX's and Single speeds. In those days Raleigh mainly made post office bikes and the well known Raleigh Burner and Ultra Burner BMX's, from a factory in springs. Not many other companies were making bikes only others i know of were, the Immelman brothers (Alpina) and Gotti Hanson (Handsom, Peugeot) and the dudes at Raleigh. Anyone got any ideas' on this? faulty
  11. hey guys, i bought some of these brakes, they are well priced but not the best. i am sure they can be tweeked and made better. can someone answer some questions. 1. if i bleed them and run a thiner fluid will they be more responsive and less spongy. 2. if i change the pads, what pads must i use? 3. i am running a 180mm rotor in front and a 160mm rotor at the rear is this the best setup. 4. the bike is a cross country hard tail, do i really care if the brakes are spongy? shot faulty
  12. the plan might be to extend the champs over 4 days this will aloow for inclusion of world and olympic events at both a national and provincial level. we wait till after friday to see what come about. malcolm kzn track commissioner
  13. i dont think it's right to bow down to him and the big machine that is 5fm, i also dont think it's right to mock OCD.
  14. ok so here it is, on the way to work in the morning i listen to 5fm, this happens to be Gareth Cliff's show. very often he bashes cycling and cyclists over the air. Does he have the right to do this? Cyclists also have a right to use the road and have road closure for events. i am not sure what his personal opinion is, or what he is trying to achieve but he should be stopped. i would start a petetion or facebook group to form an aliance against him but this would just give him satisfaction of his selfish little thoughts. Greg Albert said last night in the CKZN meeting that we should do something as he is only tarnishing cycling in a day and age were we need it to be promoted. i know he was invited by a pro team to ride in a team car for a race but declined it, possibly beacuse it is easy to slam somthing when you are ignorant. i feel somebody should take this up with 5fm management or his program manager, does he have the right of this "properganderis" bullsh1t. can you believe he claims to have had a dream last night that he was in a relationship with Paris Hilton, do me a favour more like he was with her dog. faulty
  15. he might be to young for junior worlds it's under investigation, he is very quick at the moment, Wikus has some good ideas about training and i see improvement in my self since i have been riding with them both for a while now. i heard alot of rumors about Morne, if he is still riding i am sure he would have been at SA Champs. if he dont have a sponsor who is paying for him to be in Italy?
  16. so if you really want to know the truth. shimano would not be were they are today if it were not for campagnolo.
  17. i took my bike , a pink CSK Track Bike, to PE last week, i took it in a free giant bike box that i got from Cyclesphere my LBS, it got nicked in PE so i returned home with wheel covers and the bike without a box. i watched them the whole time with the bike on and off the plane they took fantastic care of it. so i dont think airlines are as bad when you are the only bike on the flight.
  18. we got an under 16 kid in KZN that ran an 11.10 a few weeks ago, this makes him the second fasted sprinter in the country at the moment. he got no sponsors, only passion and lots of speed
  19. what a hoot, whats the place coming too?
  20. this is were the commission or CSA needs to step in and set the boundries to the race organisers. however if you enter the race knowing this in advance you have to accept the fate. well done on a good finish and a great race.
  21. It's a good point, if those riders had been knocked down the club would be demanding action from CSA or affiliate commissions. The public would be persecuting the driver of the car before the evidence was discussed.
  22. the manager forgot the loan bike in durban, whilst he was packing the bikes on the trailer he made a mistake, the rider was Chris Jennings from House of Paint junior team. he rode a different bike every race he was in, i asked him for a report back on which bike was best. he still managed some excellent results including silver in the team persuit.
  23. the problem is some road cyclists have an attitude, they think cause they are out riding on a public holiday making the effort the world should bow down to there needs. not all cyclists are a problem, but the few that have no regard for other road users are the ones that give the rest a bad name.
  24. interesting, you can still ride without sponsors, how the development guys do it, is amazing. with the heart and passion you can make anything possible, i think the reasons go deaper than that.
  25. i saw myself on TV in the adventure the tandem i saw walked down nic's pass, all i could smell at the bottom was burnt disk pads, haha, glad to have finished, rode it really slow but 20 hours on a bike in 3 days is far to much, more hill training required for next year. faulty
