  1. I used to have a 180 up front and that definitely gave me more braking power, but I now run 160's all round as I find the larger rotors harder to keep true. I can see some practical benefit in running a small rotor at the back as Capricorn says it allows you to just shrug off some speed and not lock up, but this obviously depends on your riding style.
  2. I ride with a guy who has Avid V-brakes with decent pads and he stops far quicker than I can with my oldish Avid Juicy 5 discs. The only major difference is stopping when the rim is covered with mud or a bit wet, in which case discs perform much better. V-brake pads are much cheaper as well, the avid pads for my disc brakes are about R270 per brake! I recently bought a brand-new lightweight Mavic disc wheelset with XT hubs for around R2200, so if you are patient and wait, you can get a good second hand disc wheelset and sell your old one for about the same as it would cost to replace your hubs.
  3. A set of Avid G2's retail at about R800 for 2, so R1000 is not too overpriced.
  4. Another thing worth mentioning is that the glue used in those puncture kits has a finite life and tends to go rubbery over time, so check it every few months and have at least two tubes. (most cycle shops stock them separately) Had an incident yesterday where I was left punctured with a long walk home. Luckily another rider gave me his spare inner tube to get me home.
  5. Haha I've actually got tubeless but took them off while I was training on the road for a few weeks. Conti mountain kings wear out so quickly on the tar! To think I was starting to doubt the hype behind tubeless, but after todays episode will be replacing them tomorrow morning
  6. ... who gave me his spare inner tube today. Thanks bud, you made my day. I was on my second puncture of the day at the top of Majic forest, no puncture repair sealant left, not looking forward to the long walk home. First guy I ask just gives me his spare inner tube. I offered to refund him (tubes are expensive these days), but he said don't worry about it. Allowed me to carry on up and do some singletrack. Halfway down though I snake-bit my other tube and had to crawl home on the rim
  7. Congrats! Its an awesome feeling. I had an amazing ride at Harkerville in Knysna a week ago, rode all the way to the coast through some epic forest singletrack. It was one of those amazing experiences that you just know you will never be able to explain to anyone else. My first ride at Tokai forest since I broke my ankle 3 months ago ended in a bad fall and I just couldn't find my flow at all, ended feeling disappointed and tired. I went for my second ride today, well I felt calm and just flowed through all the drops, jumps and rocks, had an amazing ride ending with the sunset and a troop of baboons barking at me. Cant wait to conquer Silvermine on Saturday! Such a great sport and we have such wonderful places to do it in.
  8. My first argus and ... PD starting at 08:56
  9. i went to a shop in Knysna and they charged me R50 for a Kenda inner tube but to make up for it they sold me a wire bead Kenda small block 8 for R110 cat-i I think the reason they replaced your tyre is because they usually pump them up dik hard to check the stans for a proper seal. Most likely the mechanic got trigger happy with the pump
  10. Another reason to avoid riding on the tar, will rather stick to the bush and the mountain's, ensuring I keep my body parts intact. Maybe one day SA drivers will realise that paying tax doesn't mean you now own the road. That being said I feel our roads are not adequately equipped to deal with the myriad of cyclists who seem to be everywhere leading up to the Argus.
  11. Even the Avid rotors I recently bought from the LBS had quite rough edges, but they dont really affect rotors performance in any way.
  12. In my experience laser cutting is generally charged by the weight of material of the final product. The actual cutting is very quick, but leaves a rough edge and might need some post machining to clean it up.
  13. If you are looking for a tactical weapon PM me with your specs. Tactical' date=' no I just like blowing stuff up!! [/quote'] Something like this then? WOW that looks like something from a PC game. Intense carnage right there.
  14. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Just finished building up my geared scandal 26er, such gorgeous frames, build quality is extremely good.
  15. It also depends on the frame design itself. Best thing is to find a few friends with the different sizes and see for yourself. Testing them off-road will give you a much better idea of whats right than simply riding around the block a few times.
  16. Probably a medium (17"-18") will be fine. I'm 1.86m and find a medium just on the verge of being too small, but I prefer it to a large frame.
  17. I would be interested as well, as I have the same bike also with the Ryhno lites which have a flat spot on the rear rim. It's rideable but I would still like to fix it. parabola2010-01-02 06:23:29
  18. I don't know exactly what the compact drive means but I suppose an important factor would also be the outer diameter of the bashring. If the upper guide is adjustable then it should work. If its for a fixed diameter then the ring and guide may not work together properly, as there might be enough of a gap for the chain to come off.
  19. wow this left me in stitches, he even finds place to moan about the Fairy bridge!
  20. Way better than the suntour in terms of maintainability and performance. Dont sweat it too much, just ride it till it breaks and then look for something else.
  21. Awesome stuff must have been quite an experience

    Juicy 5

no bolts fro piston adjustment on the juicy 5's. To take the pads out, underneath there should be some copper coloured pull tabs. You just pull them in and out. Hydraulic disk brakes are very tricky to setup and align properly, it takes time and experience to get a feel for it. Try the manuals from their website, they do explain it step by step. If in doubt take it to a shop and a friendly bike mechanic to show you.
