  1. Yes, on the road, if you go into Golden Gate, probably 500m meters after the filling station you'll find a tourist road going to the right (Blesbok Loop). This loop is a one-way and has a few lookout spots and usually plenty of bucks etc. if you scout the grasslands. As soon as you reach the main road again after a steep downhill, cross over to the Oribi Loop which goes past the vulture lookout. Pack your climbing legs and gears and take it easy on the downhills the first time around. Longer routes on the road can be back to Clarens (narrow road, but not too much traffic) and then the Clarens/Fouriesburg road, which has a wider shoulder. I know one can also do a large loop on gravel around the northern mountains, but I am not familiar with the exact routes to take.

Yes, I also have that experience, I think it is due to a combination of different surfaces with steep gradients and other obstacles thrown into the mix resulting in the use of more muscle groups, spreading the loads, as opposed to a repetitive movement. Also, the surfaces tend to be more forgiving and one also move quite a bit slower than on the road resulting in lower impacts. That being said, rolling an ankle and/or having a slip is inevitable, so you need to focus on ankle mobility and strengthening. Ask your trainer to assist with that. My 2 cents, find yourself a balance disc and stand on it with one leg for approximately 2mins at a time. Even if it is just once a day. As your balance gets better refrain from holding on to the wall and even start closing your eyes. This will help with subconscious movements/adjustments as you run on uneven/unstable surfaces.

  9. Hi Wayne, I swop around between Salomon Slabs, Nike Pegasus and Nike Wildhorse to mix it up and not get too used to a constant drop etc., (and also depending on the terrain/conditions). In terms of weight the Nikes are definitely heavier and I can feel that on massive/steep climbs but the upside is that it is much easier on the legs. That being said it took me around 100 km on the Pegasus before I got used to it on rocky terrain and went over a few ankles (which you get used to in trail running). So just give it a bit of time. Compared to the other 2 the Pegasus definitely "runs" easier. I used it as weapon of choice for last year's Skyrun, it is certainly not an entry level shoe only. On technical mountain runs with lots of elevation I usually take the lighter shoes. Enjoy the trails, and like the other say, ignore the pace and don't feel bad to walk on uphills, everyone does it.

So you create a whatsapp group, a few friends get added... Let's organize our own little runs... Let's meet at the coffee shop as a starting point... Coffee afterwards... I'll pay, you get the next one... How about we do a race together... I'll enter, pay me back... I'll get the licenses, pay me back... Let's get matching shirts... I'll order, pay me back... Can I drive with you? Sure, we can split petrol, pay me back next time... The system works, the whatsapp group grows as more friends gets added. Essentially, it's too much for one person to pay every time and wait for the paying back, so you need a kitty where money gets put in to use for these things. Is that not perhaps how clubs started initially? I also do most runs solo and offroad and don't belong to a club, but I can see Jaws677's points, especially if you do road races and needs logistics to be sorted i.t.o. registrations, ASA numbers etc. and the benefit of having a club gazebo to relax at or wait for family members/friends that is still running. Also at longer races like Comrades a club gazebo with your supporting nutrition /back-up gear would make sense. Added that, for some people, especially ladies, it makes sense to join others during early morning or late afternoon runs, it makes them feel safe and it is something we as men tend to overlook. I think there is a place for both solo running and club running, depending on your own situation. Just my 2 cents, each to their own

Is there a number (yourself of an officer in charge of this matter) that we can share with local clubs to ask people that has open cases to contact or should they contact the police station where they opened the case? I know a lot of Trailwolf members were attacked on Klapperkop earlier this year so perhaps one can get in touch with them.
  13. Personally I haven't done the Comrades or followed any of their plans so cannot really comment. But for what its worth, if I were you I'd go and run that 24k trail run and do the 30k trail/gravel the following day. That just seems like a whole lot more fun than doing a 50k training run on the road. But that's just me.

  19. Gert just broke his own record (SA record) again at 51.599km earlier this week and in the process also broke the UCI Masters World Hour Record. Super ride!

  21. He has a broken wrist which hasn't healed quick enough, but he was actually showing better form prior to that crash. I hope he goes for GC in Spain and get a top 10 which will give him the boost he needs. He has the ability and enough time to still grab a few big ones

  23. Go fit them in the shop first, you need something that doesn't bounce around and fits tight to prevent shaving. Preferably something with that clips/cross over your chest as well. I prefer the water bottles in the front as opposed to a bladder at the back. Size are relative to what event you want to do, I use a 12l expandable vest and it's fine for most races (fine for 30 to 100 km) You want to run comfortable

I will be sitting on the couch probably eating some biltong as part of my non-vegan diet while he goes up and down that hill fueled by cabbage... But make no mistake, he is a super strong rider and should know what he is capable of, so I wouldn't be surprised if he comes close.
