  1. Hi all. Are the trails at St Stithians open at the moment to the riders?
  2. Ya... i also crushed on the Santa Cruz Chameleon at some stage... but you pay for those big names Yes, take a XC bike, put on a slightly longer fork and a dropper post and you'll be amazed at the trail capability... i guess what holds my GT back from being 'Trail' is the really aggressive head angle and the light weight... you always feel like you on the knife's edge of a rodeo bull But if you like that feel, then its all good.
  3. I love my 2013 GT Zaskar Pro Le hardtail... have ridden many trails on it. But, the new GT Hardtails are a bit pricy for what you get in my opinion. Perhaps, take a look at the Specialized Chisel Comp... https://www.specialized.com/za/en/shop/bikes/mountain-bikes/cross-country-mountain-bikes/chisel/c/chisel
  4. Hi all. Two questions: 1) A quick admin question.. has anyone had experience in couriering a pack of original documents to New Zealand from RSA? Which service provider would you recommend? I got a quote from RAM for R1600 bucks... which I suppose is not that bad... but want to hear about previous experiences from you all.. 2) When I get over there, can I just pack my bike into a bike box and travel with it like I was taking any normal international flight? Not sure how sticky SAA, Qantas and Air New Zealand are about it..
  5. Looking forward to this event! Will be my first multi-day race and haven't ever ridden my MTB in Clarens. And what a challenge on Day 1 to ascend beyond 2000m above sea level. All the best.
  6. Luckily I can say none of these... except the GPS watch... apply to me! I'm part of a very uncool group: white, heterosexual, hardtail (leg-powered), hate brussel sprouts and most green things and I dont wear bracelets.... unless you count a TomTom GPS watch (heck it doesnt even have HR) as a 'bracelet' Edit: Is it ok for me to pack my Gillette shaver?...
  7. Thanks bud taking a look at your checklist now... glad its still uploaded!
  8. So Im only like... 7 years late for this thread... so thanks to Google Search This is proving very helpful... Im doing my first multi-day race in 2 months or so.
  9. Thanks for the report back bud.
  10. Thanks, And by other direction you mean from William Nicol PnP towards Paulshof?
  11. Hi guys.. its been a while since I have seen incident reports along the Braamfontein Spruit, Emmarentia, Marks Park stretch. I only cycle a small portion of it on my way to work in the mornings, but want to do a proper, long spruit ride one of these weekday mornings... alone... is it too much of a risk?
  12. Hi all Some buying advice please. I have a BIG 4 and a half year old... He is about 110cm tall, weighs 25kg and has an inseam of 56cm. He is very good on his balance bike, but I would like to upgrade him to a pedal bike. From a confidence perspective, I have been thinking of getting him a 16inch bike... lighter, easier to handle. But...pretty soon, I think he may outgrow it... in which case he will need a bigger bike. He's pretty much on the cusp of already needing a 20inch bike. But I noticed that 20inchers are more suited to 8 year olds and probably those that have had a few years experience on a pedal bike... So, option a: Buy him a cheapie 16inch (900 bucks makro special), let him learn on it for 6 months and then buy him a better 20 inch bike option b: buy a good 16inch and allow him to ride a 'small' bike for a few years option c: get him straight onto a decent 20 inch bike, and take the risk that he will learn without training wheels... I've heard that training wheels are a bad idea for kids that have already learnt on a balance bike anyway If South Africa stocked decent 18inch bikes I would go for that... but I have searched online and that doesnt seem popular at all...
  13. Thanks Patensie Thats very helpful... the handling fee, I know you cant remember the exact amount... but was is it closer to R100 or R500 or R1000?
  14. Hi all I havent ordered parts from CRC for a long time, but want to do so shortly, so please excuse my ignorance.. I am ordering the following: Chainrings, bar tape, cassette and road tyres Will i get charged just VAT on top of the listed price? or do I need to do some other calculation on top of that? Also, I am thinking of avoiding the Post Office disaster by doing DHL express for R100 bucks more... would that be prudent?
  15. Thanks for the good discount!
  16. So what you all say? I know the fashionista's say saddle bags on MTB's are uncool, but on a road bike?
  17. Gees... it looks like they racing in the desert...
  18. Hey guys. Considering getting a set. My bike runs quick release front and rear. No thru axle. Will they be compatible? Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
  19. This is a hot bike. I'll probably have to look for a second hand one eventually, coz probably gonna cost a packet due to supply and demand in SA.
  20. I cant cut and paste the picture in this thread. However, look at the first picture where they are manualling on the tar... look under the water bottles on the surface of the frame closest to the road (undercarriage)... no branding, just white and mud... whilst the rest of the bike actually looks pretty clean and spiffy
  21. Interesting to notice that in two separate photos, the undercarriage of the frame is painted differently. I do hope they stick with the black and 'Pyga' bottom rather than the all clear white... My bike has a mostly white undercarriage, and it looks so dirty so quickly. the black and branded undercarriage will look awesome, even once mud and dirt has caked it a bit. Just my 2c
  22. Gees bro, that is so hectic... that guy's gonna have a coronary... is it really worth it? A question I ask myself everytime I am tempted to engage in roadrage. At the end of the day, roadrage is often about the silliest little 'inconvenience', whilst our loved ones sit at home waiting for us to return (and they really dont care if we won the battle, just that we home...) The other problem is that motorist will now have an even more tainted attitude towards cyclists (if he survives)... I already chat to people here at work, and some of them have shared how they 'loathe' cyclists on the roads.
  23. Really love this approach. Making South African events desirable to international, first world competitors can only do wonders for the sport, the local cycling industry, and a drive to achieve great things in MTB, coming to a culmination in South Africa.
  24. haha.... what a response from the road-walker! She dont even have money for a bike. Perhaps she was aiming for a Road Accident Fund Claim walking in the middle of the road. I try not to lower myself but sometimes these motorists and walkers really, really tempt me I had a mate who accidentally clipped a drunk walker (in his car) using his side mirror. When the police arrived, all of a sudden there were 6 other walkers telling the cops how they were also clipped and want to make a claim...
