  1. I know this probably isn't the right place for this (but it is related at least!), but how does the Magicshine compare to a Blackburn System X4? Can get them for a similar price and it's a brand I know better so thought it might be a good option...
  2. Sounds like a plan... Will order a light tomorrow probably and can take it from there. Pity u guys r that side, I'm comin from claremont, but shouldn't be much traffic at that time.
  3. What sort of price are lights suitable for riding like that? Very keen, but no lights yet unfortunately (and the budget is a bit tight this month!). What sort of distance and time are you looking at doing - to rhodes mem and back???
  4. Alternatively you could buy it, sell the frame and buy a frame in the correct size (possibly even get a better frame)... Obviously more effort, but can be fun customising your bike (labour is expensive though if you can't do it yourself). IMO go for the best frame/fork/wheels combo, the rest wears out and you can upgrade as it does and as you get into cycling more seriously...
  5. The CT ones normally pop up in pieces with the 2nd hand bike dealers (they seem to receive the whole bike and sell everything except the frame from my experience)... Good luck, a bike like that very possibly could be noticed and I hope you get it back!
  6. I recently acquired a 2 year old SID world cup... I am wary of posting this as I don't like being told I'm stupid, but I really am stumped... The expander plug in it seems to fasten up to a point and then suddenly releases if I keep on tightening it (it doesn't get tight enough at any point in this so I'm not overtightening it). It has a carbon steerer so I'm wary of messing around too much... Is there a special technique with the expander plugs in carbon MTB forks? Do I need to somehow tighten it without using a top cap? I have searched internet for more info, but to no avail... Unfortunately due to work commitments I won't get to a shop for at least 2 weeks and really would like to be able to ride this weekend.
  7. Unfortunately can only get the parts if you buy a complete bike from me, can't sell individual parts (the pics of the bikes will come when all of my stuff arrives!). Exciting days ahead, road bike with SRAM Red, carbon dual sus with X-0 and still deciding what I'll do with the hardtail! (Oh, and a play bike with a mix of everything from X7 to X0). Seriously contemplated the XX option, but just didn't seem to be worth it... Hoping that the dual sus will get me through to the 2012 Epic (that's how long I need to save for the entry fee!)
  8. Couldn't find any pics... didn't even know they existed and then got a pricelist with them all on it so figured why not give it a try. It does look from the pics that they have just rebranded the Noir crankset and Elixir CR brakes though as X0 (no complaints about that though I s'pose except the X0 is slightly more expensive!). Also getting an XX groupset with SID WC XX fork for someone else and a SRAM Red groupset for myself so going to be quite the order by the time it's done!
  9. I know this thread is old, but just ordered the complete 10 speed X0 groupset for myself (right down to the brakes)!!! Still waiting for confirmation of my order, but the prices aren't much different to the 9 speed by the look of it. This, together with SID WC fork and carbon dual sus frame should be awesome! Pity they not making 10 speed X0 in green because my frame is black and green, but decided to go for the red instead (with the much cheaper 10 speed PG-1070 cassette to save a few ronds!). Now the waiting begins... Hoping it'll be here in less than a month, but will just have to wait and see!
  10. Long distance buying is risky for both parties so doubt you'll get someone to send it on COD basis... Maybe try and work something out to make you both happy like paying 50% up front and the rest on delivery or find out who they work for and contact them there (much less likely to get scammed by someone if you know they work for a reputable company). Basically, make yourself as happy as possible about the deal first, but accept there is always a risk... I've done many long distance deals (with hubbers though, not gumtree) and never had any problems except for someone who short paid me R100, but that's a very minor issue.
  11. That's a Tora on there, much better than the Dart 2... Looks like a very good bike to start with and a good price considering the condition it looks like it's in... Just remember, cycling is a bottomless pit so it may be best to hand over all bank cards, cash and valuables to someone else to look after now. It always starts with that first R5k, then you see some wheels you like, then it's time for a little KCNC bling etc etc etc...
  12. Now fill it with helium and you'll have the first ever sub zero gram frame! can end up with a weightless bike!
  13. They say there wasn't any point in doing a March one because there weren't any rides in March... Surely we pay them to do it with our membership fee? It isn't about when it's convenient to them.
  14. The motorbiker was in town so won't be the same accident...
  15. Very true... We've all seen it and the description sounds just about spot on... If only you had taken a photo of the guy to include in your letter. Maybe a description of bike and cycling kit would be a start if you know it? Name and shame the ppl who ride like &%^&$s (they will obviously have to point out how you were speeding and driving too close to them on principle, but we can ignore that as just being the std rubbish defense). That's when you call the cops and lay a charge of assault (or whatever the legal description of it is). Those are also the ppl who then hit Ou Kaaps after racing down the hill and have to get off and push their bike up the other side.
  16. Is this not homework, asking other ppl's opinions who might have been shopping in this market before? In about 2 weeks time I'll have an Edge ISP frameset here to view and a week or 2 after that, it will be complete with SRAM Red and full Edge carbon build... Could do a complete build with SRAM Red and SRAM S40 wheelset (or a choice of a few other wheelsets ranging from cheap alu wheels to Easton EC90's - obviously this will affect the price) for R40k (possibly slightly less, but will only have final pricing once everything arrives here).
  17. apparently there are some routes there to do' date=' will have to check it out on google earth sometime. [/quote'] Just think it would be nice if you could go from Rhodes mem to the cable car and around the other side back to constantia nek, then apparently there's a short track up next to constantia nek to the top of it and then just have to follow the road from there for the last few km's.
  18. From Rhodes Mem, you can go all the way to the cable car on mainly jeep track... Some very nice riding with a few very tough climbs, but nothing too technical. Obviously can do the opposite from the town side. I just pick roads as i go and you learn the routes fairly quickly, but most roads will end up taking you in the right direction. If you go all the way to the top of Signal Hill and back, it ends up being a nice long training ride. As Parabola says, the route from Tokai forest up to silvermine and around the 10km loop at the top is a very nice, very scenic ride. If you don't know your way around Tokai, you might find you end up at the wrong place a few times first though. Wouldn't mind hearing about any other nice routes in the Southern suburbs. Is there anywhere on the other side of table mountain to ride (i.e. above Camps Bay/Llandudno etc?)
  19. We're not talking about frames here, we're talking about wheels... And I think we can safely say that either lighter wheels make you go faster/easier or they don't, irrespective of who it is sitting on the bike. Maybe they don't make a R5k difference, but there has to be a difference otherwise the pro's wouldn't ride on expensive, lightweight wheels - in general, what works for them is going to work for the rest of us. Why then do our 'pro' riders try and get the same stuff TdF riders use? Surely they aren't at the same level as those riders so therefore (based on your conclusions) those parts don't actually benefit them in any way and they should rather ride MTB's with knobblies? Where is the line between 'average joe' and your so-called professionals? Does riding funrides in the 'elite' group make you one of these professionals and only when you enter these groups do your components suddenly spring into life and give you the edge they never gave you before? I really don't understand how it is you are deciding that funriders (be it D group or Z group) don't benefit in any way from good quality components yet ppl in higher groups do? Back to the point of the thread, I believe that a jump like that in wheels will make a difference to your riding. If you were talking about 50g or 100g's then no it probably isn't worth it at all. Theoretically you should also be getting better quality hubs with the more expensive wheels which should also help...
  20. But what you're basically saying is the average joe can buy R6k wheels and then he doesn't have to feel guilty about drinking more beer as he chooses to improve his equipment rather than himself? If you take the same person on the same day with R1k wheels and R6k wheels, which ones will he be faster on? That's the basic question here and even you have said that the wheels will be an improvement (you're also saying you can get an improvement from training harder, but that's another question completely which hopefully no1 here doubts at all). For the funrider it also isn't only about race times, they might just make it easier to stay with your friends out on the road or to do a training ride by yourself out to Cape Point or wherever it is you want to ride...
  21. Why would it affect a pro any differently to the 'average joe'? Surely that's like saying Schumi can go faster in a Ferrari than a Yaris, but I couldn't... What's faster for a pro surely must be faster for everyone? (except for things like disk wheels which us 'average joe's' probably couldn't get to spin fast enough to really work...) I changed wheels and I could do the exact same ride by myself at a significantly faster average speed (a ride I have probably done at least 100 times in my life so not talking about a once off thing)... Maybe it is a mental thing, but the difference was very noticeable so something definitely worked.
  22. Anyways, old debate... been killed... we're all entitled to our own opinions and our own methods. I'll order from overseas, you order locally. Without you, I would have to learn to service my own bike as there wouldn't be anyone to do it so I can't really say you're wrong!
  23. Alternatively post a wanted ad for a group order to get free shipping and you'll have it landed here for R300, pay someone R25 to fit it and you can get your bike serviced by the LBS for free (sort of). That way you're winning and still supporting the locals (if that's what you really want to do)...
