1. Couldn't find any pics... didn't even know they existed and then got a pricelist with them all on it so figured why not give it a try. It does look from the pics that they have just rebranded the Noir crankset and Elixir CR brakes though as X0 (no complaints about that though I s'pose except the X0 is slightly more expensive!). Also getting an XX groupset with SID WC XX fork for someone else and a SRAM Red groupset for myself so going to be quite the order by the time it's done!
2. I know this thread is old, but just ordered the complete 10 speed X0 groupset for myself (right down to the brakes)!!! Still waiting for confirmation of my order, but the prices aren't much different to the 9 speed by the look of it. This, together with SID WC fork and carbon dual sus frame should be awesome! Pity they not making 10 speed X0 in green because my frame is black and green, but decided to go for the red instead (with the much cheaper 10 speed PG-1070 cassette to save a few ronds!). Now the waiting begins... Hoping it'll be here in less than a month, but will just have to wait and see!
3. Long distance buying is risky for both parties so doubt you'll get someone to send it on COD basis... Maybe try and work something out to make you both happy like paying 50% up front and the rest on delivery or find out who they work for and contact them there (much less likely to get scammed by someone if you know they work for a reputable company). Basically, make yourself as happy as possible about the deal first, but accept there is always a risk... I've done many long distance deals (with hubbers though, not gumtree) and never had any problems except for someone who short paid me R100, but that's a very minor issue.
4. That's a Tora on there, much better than the Dart 2... Looks like a very good bike to start with and a good price considering the condition it looks like it's in... Just remember, cycling is a bottomless pit so it may be best to hand over all bank cards, cash and valuables to someone else to look after now. It always starts with that first R5k, then you see some wheels you like, then it's time for a little KCNC bling etc etc etc...
5. Now fill it with helium and you'll have the first ever sub zero gram frame! can end up with a weightless bike!
6. They say there wasn't any point in doing a March one because there weren't any rides in March... Surely we pay them to do it with our membership fee? It isn't about when it's convenient to them.
7. The motorbiker was in town so won't be the same accident...
8. Very true... We've all seen it and the description sounds just about spot on... If only you had taken a photo of the guy to include in your letter. Maybe a description of bike and cycling kit would be a start if you know it? Name and shame the ppl who ride like &%^&$s (they will obviously have to point out how you were speeding and driving too close to them on principle, but we can ignore that as just being the std rubbish defense). That's when you call the cops and lay a charge of assault (or whatever the legal description of it is). Those are also the ppl who then hit Ou Kaaps after racing down the hill and have to get off and push their bike up the other side.
9. Is this not homework, asking other ppl's opinions who might have been shopping in this market before? In about 2 weeks time I'll have an Edge ISP frameset here to view and a week or 2 after that, it will be complete with SRAM Red and full Edge carbon build... Could do a complete build with SRAM Red and SRAM S40 wheelset (or a choice of a few other wheelsets ranging from cheap alu wheels to Easton EC90's - obviously this will affect the price) for R40k (possibly slightly less, but will only have final pricing once everything arrives here).
10. apparently there are some routes there to do' date=' will have to check it out on google earth sometime. [/quote'] Just think it would be nice if you could go from Rhodes mem to the cable car and around the other side back to constantia nek, then apparently there's a short track up next to constantia nek to the top of it and then just have to follow the road from there for the last few km's.
11. From Rhodes Mem, you can go all the way to the cable car on mainly jeep track... Some very nice riding with a few very tough climbs, but nothing too technical. Obviously can do the opposite from the town side. I just pick roads as i go and you learn the routes fairly quickly, but most roads will end up taking you in the right direction. If you go all the way to the top of Signal Hill and back, it ends up being a nice long training ride. As Parabola says, the route from Tokai forest up to silvermine and around the 10km loop at the top is a very nice, very scenic ride. If you don't know your way around Tokai, you might find you end up at the wrong place a few times first though. Wouldn't mind hearing about any other nice routes in the Southern suburbs. Is there anywhere on the other side of table mountain to ride (i.e. above Camps Bay/Llandudno etc?)
12. We're not talking about frames here, we're talking about wheels... And I think we can safely say that either lighter wheels make you go faster/easier or they don't, irrespective of who it is sitting on the bike. Maybe they don't make a R5k difference, but there has to be a difference otherwise the pro's wouldn't ride on expensive, lightweight wheels - in general, what works for them is going to work for the rest of us. Why then do our 'pro' riders try and get the same stuff TdF riders use? Surely they aren't at the same level as those riders so therefore (based on your conclusions) those parts don't actually benefit them in any way and they should rather ride MTB's with knobblies? Where is the line between 'average joe' and your so-called professionals? Does riding funrides in the 'elite' group make you one of these professionals and only when you enter these groups do your components suddenly spring into life and give you the edge they never gave you before? I really don't understand how it is you are deciding that funriders (be it D group or Z group) don't benefit in any way from good quality components yet ppl in higher groups do? Back to the point of the thread, I believe that a jump like that in wheels will make a difference to your riding. If you were talking about 50g or 100g's then no it probably isn't worth it at all. Theoretically you should also be getting better quality hubs with the more expensive wheels which should also help...
13. But what you're basically saying is the average joe can buy R6k wheels and then he doesn't have to feel guilty about drinking more beer as he chooses to improve his equipment rather than himself? If you take the same person on the same day with R1k wheels and R6k wheels, which ones will he be faster on? That's the basic question here and even you have said that the wheels will be an improvement (you're also saying you can get an improvement from training harder, but that's another question completely which hopefully no1 here doubts at all). For the funrider it also isn't only about race times, they might just make it easier to stay with your friends out on the road or to do a training ride by yourself out to Cape Point or wherever it is you want to ride...
14. Why would it affect a pro any differently to the 'average joe'? Surely that's like saying Schumi can go faster in a Ferrari than a Yaris, but I couldn't... What's faster for a pro surely must be faster for everyone? (except for things like disk wheels which us 'average joe's' probably couldn't get to spin fast enough to really work...) I changed wheels and I could do the exact same ride by myself at a significantly faster average speed (a ride I have probably done at least 100 times in my life so not talking about a once off thing)... Maybe it is a mental thing, but the difference was very noticeable so something definitely worked.
15. Anyways, old debate... been killed... we're all entitled to our own opinions and our own methods. I'll order from overseas, you order locally. Without you, I would have to learn to service my own bike as there wouldn't be anyone to do it so I can't really say you're wrong!
16. Alternatively post a wanted ad for a group order to get free shipping and you'll have it landed here for R300, pay someone R25 to fit it and you can get your bike serviced by the LBS for free (sort of). That way you're winning and still supporting the locals (if that's what you really want to do)...
17. I am not sure? Might be that the finish moved slightly or something like that. <P style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt" =Msonormal>Apparently, over the years, out of a total of 165 000 individual Argus entries, 7900 have done one or more sub 3 hour finishes. <P style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt" =Msonormal> <P style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt" =Msonormal>For 2011, the big question will be: 1.) will it still go over Boy's Drive; and 2.) if the Falsebay road construction gets stuck between KBay and FishH - what road can be taken? Very small chance of another De-tour?!? Hope not. [/quote'] mmmm.... That will really suck. Well if the route is the same as last year and if I wake up and there is any SE blowing. Then I am going to have another "booze cruise" But what if they do work on the false bay road though? That is going to cause havoc. I mean at the rate that they repair roads here, they may as well change the argus to go down the new westcoast IRT lanes down to melkbos and return over our new M5 flyway But really now. If they end up working on the road closer to fish hoek. Think of the route they might have us on then. M3, Steep OuKaap, Fish hoek or over black hill and then onto the the rest of the race. That will be hectic. I will rather have boys drive anyday then. Why did you even have to suggest that! Couldn't imagine anything worse... The problem is, it sounds so realistic and seriously possible for next year (at the rate they're fixing the main road, it's more likely to be in 2012 though!)
18. If it is a charity event and you are using the cyclists to raise funds then the financial info should be publically available, you should have nothing to hide...
19. Who pays for the cycle lanes? Probably the government, not the Argus cycletour... I am not saying there is definitely something funny with it, but I would be very happy to see proof that there isn't as it is a definite possibility. Every week when I bend over to the PPA with their crazy entry fees, they respond and say it goes to charity... Why can't someone organise a cycling race for cyclists who just want to ride their bikes for fun and not for the greater cause? I donated money to Frail because the guy he was supporting really deserves it and has probably seriously suffered throughout his life... Buying a development cyclist a new set of Zipp 404's is not quite as high on my priority list. I know what I say makes me look bad, but I feel very strongly that feeding ppl and giving them houses comes a long way before giving others new racing bikes and professional coaches (things I can't necessarily afford for myself!)
20. No1 has mentioned that they are so proud of donating R5.8m to charity in 2009. This is R152 per rider (assuming 38000 entrants). Firstly, is the PPA a charity or a business? Would love to see their financial statements because I've never understood how they possible aren't lining their pockets... They keep talking about their many many cycling initiatives. Where are they? I've never seen them? Giving 100 disadvantaged kids bikes and kit really doesn't cost that much (relative to their income)... Why not dump R500k into the prize pot, give R4m back to the cyclists in reduced entries (R105 per cyclist!!!) and you still have a very sizeable donation for Rotary or whoever it is that actually deserves it... And yet they increase the entry fees every year. Why are we forced to donate so much money to charity just to be able to race in SA. The entry fee should cover the costs and any donations should be voluntary (as in 2 Oceans where you apparently even get to choose who you donate it to!).
21. It was incredible to see Lance lined up on the start line ready to ride the Argus and, no matter who won (Yes, it was ML!), you can tell from the time how much more effort was put in with having him there... that would have smashed any records for the route given better weather. Taking into account Boyes drive, that probably could have been under 2.35 on the normal route. Take out the wind and you're probably closer to 2.15 or less... Whether you like him or not, I think he might have just taken SA cycling up a notch by showing our cyclists what they really are capable of.
22. Any chance you have a map of where you rode the last time or guidance on how to find places you can ride there? Would really love to do something like that at the end of the year, but no idea of how to go about organising it (the route mainly).
