  1. Wouldn't mind having one of those, but don't like the look of the stem (too flashy), the wheels just look boring and there's too much white! At least the horrible looking crankset serves a good practical purpose!
  2. Not sure whether there are any similarly powerful rear lights out there, but the Magicshine MJ-818 puts out a claimed 80 lumens for R480 (including 4 cell lithium ion battery pack which normally retails for R600 alone!)... There is no way someone can claim not to see you then, they are insanely bright. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/80654-magicshine-lights/ I know it's a bit of a opportunistic plug for them, but you're not going to get anywhere with blue flashing lights unfortunately so I reckon you need a good alternative!
  3. Ratings or comments are a good idea. It's up to the buyer to judge for their self, but it does give them some additional info from which to make the judgement (very little change from the current system)... On the verification thing, let's be honest, the hub is run by a 20-something guy sitting at home I assume, would you want to go to all that hassle? I know I would never do it... It's up to you to decide for yourself if someone is legitimate... I have probably sold hundreds of items on the hub and still have people concerned about their security when buying from me. I will try my best to provide details to prove I am legitimate, but they are always welcome to walk away if they aren't happy, I won't take it as an insult. This guy has brought a new level to the hub, with multiple profiles and a proper knowledge of the items he was selling, unfortunately people were caught out by his intelligence and well constructed scam, but now everyone is hopefully awake again and will be more wary. No matter what you do, someone will get through the systems and post fraudulent ads and you will just be more inclined to believe them as they have already "verified" themselves. The idea of a different classifieds layout will be much better for ease of use, but not necessarily for a buyer or sellers security. In the end, this is just another open forum, not a shop.
  4. How do you search for IP addresses? Everyone always says that is all you need, but I've never seen anyone actually track someone down with one...
  5. Just be careful posting those details publically for your friend's sake... those are confidential details and I am sure ABSA can check who searched for the account details today if they wanted to. I don't think even the police should be able to get the details of a bank's client without a warrant. I hope I am wrong, but your friend might be in a position to have legal charges laid against them for providing that info.
  6. What group are you in? I haven't checked my Garmin but know it was far too fast for me (E - F groups).
  7. Their last minute organising sucks, but it's nice to see something different on the calendar that all of us funriders can also participate in... An entry fee of R10 is also a breath of fresh air from Pedal Power (they would be able to justify R100 for it without any hesitation!). I can't make it today, but would love to be able to do some of these in the future whether it's for seeding or just for a laugh so go and support them so it happens more regularly! For those moaning about the day of the week and the seeding thing, your seeding isn't going to drop if you don't ride so stop stressing about it (it really doesn't affect you if 2 people from your group move up and you don't!). If it was on saturday, you would moan because it's the roller coaster on sunday so you can't ride so give it a break! Maybe 4 till 7 or even 8 would be better than 6, but I'm sure that will change if there is sufficient support for it... Give us a southern suburbs one and I will make sure I get there before 6 if that's what it takes!
  8. It was before the shop opened, but same person... I like to think I have something to do with it at least becoming a formal shop and not a cash based garage special like it used to be.
  9. I might very well be wrong, but based on past experience and a little bit of time, here is what I think happened to this bike (the same thing that happened to 4 other bikes that I know of, but the police don't actually care):- Frame (less the fork - that short little steerer looks out of place to me on the frame) - http://capetown.gumtree.co.za/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=251578962 Stem (and possible handlebar, can't see from the pic) - http://capetown.gumtree.co.za/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=251580696 My bike was stolen and found there about 3 hours later, the pedals were gone and the bolts holding the parts on were already loosened and on its way to the parts bin that quickly! 2 other bikes were found there (1 I found via gumtree), both were only frames, everything else was gone. I am not accusing anyone of anything (not without conclusive evidence at least), but just an example of what I have seen and experienced myself. If you are looking for a stolen bike, don't expect it to look anything like it did when it left your house. No 'reputable' dealer could have a blatantly stolen bike on their floor.
  10. Thanks, will see if I can find anything online about it, but haven't received anything from them regarding updating details... I have used my code this month without a problem so hopefully they won't cancel it!
  11. Thanks for the input... what do you mean by update my details? Is that if you don't import regularly? I import regularly and have never been asked to update anything... That's actually really funny, looks like some more from here have just popped up now in the classifieds!
  12. My assistance involves getting my forwarders to arrange a quote for freight... At the amount you were quoted, they are probably using a courier company which is insanely expensive. Some of the stuff there looks very nice and they definitely look genuine (especially as I am fairly confident their components are being sold in SA already).
  13. I'm not going to mention names, but if I'm not mistaken, these frames and other parts are available at quite a premium on the hub... That dual sus frame at 1600g (ex. shock) is stupidly light! With a nice DT Swiss on there you have an 1800g frame... If you get a decent order together, I will try to arrange cheaper shipping for you, I normally pay about 50% of the frame cost for shipping (very approximate) so about half what you are talking about (not going to bother my forwarding agent if the order is too small). I don't want any interest in the order other than arranging the people to help so the people involved will need to arrange to split the costs between them based on the value of their order or some other fair method. If you use a freight company rather than courier company which will be much cheaper then you will need a clearing agent locally. If your order is over R20k then you will need an importers permit as well (irrespective of whether it's a courier or freight company) so be careful about how you structure a group order like this. It's not as easy as CRC.
  14. I feel like that 29er frame has popped up with many different brand names on it before on the hub! Pity about the English on their website (or lack thereof!)
  15. I think that if anyone asks 'why are you selling', their account should be immediately disabled The most meaningless question ever posted on a sale, the person is selling coz they would prefer money to the item, simple! Waiting for payment to clear or not is a very subjective thing... If I sell to an old hubber with a reputation I will often not wait, new people I generally will wait. That is generally by agreement between the parties and not a pre-determined outcome. Most people are happy to pay for goods from me as they can see I've sold a lot, but for someone without a reputation they wouldn't part with money as easily. The rest of your points make perfect sense and would be useful... You also don't want to overcomplicate the process of posting ads so I think having all the fields as options is fair, but only make the genuinely NB ones required fields in order to post the ad. On the same topic, this thread was started in August, when can we expect it to be launched?
  16. Both tubbies... The EC90's have a claimed weight of 1175g with fairly low profile rims, serious climbing wheels. The others are about 60mm profile (I think) and weigh approx. 1300g... I don't know how much of a shelf life wheels have, but you can service/replace bearings and freehub which I would think are the only parts that really wear out (unless you're talking about some very well used wheels) so you are fairly safe with a set of used wheels that are in good condition visibly (I stand to be corrected here, but this has worked out for me so far!). If they've got slightly higher mileage on them then ask the seller to cover the cost of servicing them at a reputable shop.
  17. Bought many 2nd hand wheelsets without a problem, but try find something that is genuinely nearly new... On carbon wheelsets you should get some idea of whether the seller is telling the truth from the wear on the braking surface at least (if they've been used once or twice then there should be virtually no wear at all). The fact that you're considering 2nd hand means budget is a concern and if you wait a while you'll find great condition wheels used very little for anywhere up to half the new price which just seems to be the best option to me (you throw away a lot of money by buying new)... I have a set of EC90SLX's which might be something you would consider, but want to use them a little over the next month or 2 before selling (I only bought them in the past few days and haven't ridden them yet). They came off a show bike so don't appear to have been ridden at all yet... I might also have a great set of deep sections with a similar situation, but that's a secret for now and will only be on the market if I can bring myself to part with them!
  18. Luckily i've been injured so haven't had to venture out into the wind for a few weeks! Factory built wheels generally are a lot more flashy and get you more street cred, but a well built set of wheels (you buy rims, hubs, spokes) will give you much better value for money and (if built by a good wheel builder) can be a lot more reliable in most cases. There are also a few great deals on CRC at the moment like Dura Ace 7850 wheels for just over R5k (incl. VAT) or for something cheaper, Fulcrum Racing 5's will be about R2,400... Lots of other wheels there, for custom wheels, Mavic Open Pro rims, Ultegra hubs, DT Comp spokes will cost you about R3k + building costs here (those should last you a lifetime, very solid build)... Lots of ideas there and I'm sure many hubbers will be able to give you some more info on good builds, but will be much better than the wheels you listed IMHO.
  19. They're obviously less well known than the wheels you are looking at, but how about a set of Edge alu. wheels https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/73819-edge-goodies/ The SLR200's weigh 1360g and the SLR300's are 1490g, both are less than R3k. They use standard Sapim or DT Swiss spokes so are easily repairable and are on par with EA90SLX's weightwise (retail for about R9k I think). I also include a standard 2 year warranty with them and have spare rims, hubs and freehub bodies available if the need arises. I'm currently riding a set of SLR200's with my SRAM Red and they are awesome. Had 3 people in my DC team on them and all loving them... I weigh 85kg's. Otherwise rather have a set custom built at R4k, will get much better value for money than buying factory wheels like the ones you mentioned.
  20. I just can't picture it happening... Who is going to pay R9k deposit + R1.5k rental to use a set of wheels for 2 weeks (probably 1 race?). That sort of rate might work for a complete high-end race bike around the time of the big races if you're lucky, but not for a set of wheels. You're talking about someone paying your retail price on the wheels in 90 days? When you travel, would you rent a middle of the range Merc for R6k a day with minimum period of 2 weeks (R72k!)? And there they give you insurance, tyres etc. You are carrying no risk at all, but looking at paying off your cost of the wheels in probably 45 (???) or less days? You should be looking at a reasonable annual return for rental equipment, not such a super short period (especially given the fact that they carry a residual value probably at least equal to your cost so every cent from rental is pure risk-free profit). It's a very good idea, but will have to be very competitive rates as nobody really NEEDS a set of race wheels, they are just a luxury to make you feel better... Then again, I could be completely mistaken and it could work out very succesfully!
  21. Had the same recently with a guy who wanted a bike from me, no questioning the price, but adament he needed it couriered overnight to him... Dodgiest thing ever and so blatantly a scam, I just stuck to needing to wait for the money to clear before sending it and he disappeared...
  22. So 81% of the appliances in your house break ALL the time and your bike breaks 8 out of 10 times you ride it??? I'm very happy with my Chinese appliances, Japanese car, Taiwanese bikes etc etc etc!
  23. I don't believe there is a difference, but I stand to be corrected. Brad sells them under the name Magiclight locally (he has the exclusive rights to use this name as far as I am aware). All other lights are sold under the manufacturer's brand of Magicshine. I hope this clarifies it for you. Magiclight is a company more than the brand of light and they are very active in supporting cycling events, marketing etc. which may explain the higher price to some extent. They also act as a wholesaler and not a retailer thus leading to 2 markups being put on the product rather than the alternate sources where you will buy directly from the importer.
  24. Its??? Cheapiest??? realy??? pitty??? there??? I thinck their are betta things out thier for yoo to b doing than siting onn th hubb! 90% of the things you use every day of your life come from China so that's a very weak argument (or do you only use 'handmade in Italy' products which cost 3 times as much and are probably 90% produced in China and assembled in Italy!). I can guarantee there are enough hubbers using them to give a pretty solid representative sample!
  25. The response I have received is that Geomangear has not provided any evidence of any issues to the manufacturer at this stage and the manufacturer has confirmed that the batteries are still completely safe to use. Based on the lack of evidence to the contrary, I have to say there is no reason to doubt this opinion. If any evidence is found which shows this to be wrong, I will post it here for all to see. As I mentioned previously, there are hundreds (probably thousands) of happy Magicshine users in SA and I have yet to hear of any major problems with them.
