  1. Sounds about right... Been to a company that makes carbon yacht masts, carbon stored in -25degree freezer and masts made in high pressure moulds (think they are baked as well, but not completely sure). Without a very well designed mould, how could you get the stem and shifter/brake mounting points the correct diameter without any imperfections which might lead to weak points? Was the original post actually related to making a bar or just a random question about a bar? If it is being produced, the chances are it's been tested by someone else before you get yours so should be safe.
  2. 5 minutes on google shows that you can pick these things up for +- $1 from many Chinese shops... That means I could get them here for about R10 each. If I sold these for R20, would you still be interested or would that make them less exciting when the price shows them for what they really are? (1 of the descriptions from a manufacturer is 'silicone bracelet', i.e. these are actually girls fashion accessories that you are wearing so proudly!)
  3. In the 2nd last pic, it looks like his back wheel is bent in half! Absolutely crazy stuff...
  4. Can someone please explain to me where/how people come up with the weights for their bikes? I spend a fortune (IMO) on high-end parts for my bikes and don't come close to some of the weights claimed... I have just built a top-end carbon racing HT with 2011 X-0, SID WC, Rocket Ron tyres and barely an excess gram on it which comes in at 9.75kg ready to go with pedals. People advertise Raleigh HT's with Recon forks/Crossride wheels/heavy tubeless tyres/mid-range alu components and they claim they are lighter??? My road bike has a light carbon frame, 1360g wheels, SRAM Red, Keo Blades and also light parts throughout and weighs 7.17kg's, but there is someone with Ultegra groupset and Ksyrium Elite wheels on the same size frame, but it's lighter than my bike again??? Can someone please explain this to me... And, yes I am jealous and I want my bikes to achieve some of the claimed weights on the hub, but maybe all I need is a new scale?!?! And, no this is not completely serious, but it does make me upset when I see these affordable bikes at ridiculously low weights which gives me such high (low) expectations when I put my new bikes on the scale and then... B)
  5. You should be fine with it, but might be asked to use a clearing agent if you have a few packages coming in soon after each other like that so budget for an extra +/-R350 per delivery maximum (it is highly likely that such low value deliveries will get through). I think the limit is R20k, but only 3 deliveries, but they can generally be negotiated with as long as you can show it's for your private use and not for resale... I brought in a R45k delivery and wrote SARS a letter saying it wasn't for resale and they accepted that without a problem. PM Ngala24, he's in the forwarding business I think so can give you definite answers and could also help with the clearing agent part if necessary.
  6. If there wasn't all the controversy on here, then we would probably all be working right now instead of reading this. I say, bring it on! B)
  7. Just my 2c, because you felt the need to include the word 'genuine' in that... they have now changed their name (ENVE I think (???) due to restrictions on using the name Edge). Awesome wheels though, but think the price will put you in the range of considering Lightweights and similar exotic wheels. As mentioned by other people, you are going to battle to find clinchers in that weight range and you will really battle to find anything that you would want to train on.
  8. Personally, I moved from chorus to red a few weeks ago and would recommend chorus any day. I may be in the minority here, but hate the Double Tap system, just seems to overcomplicate a very simple process (that Campy has perfected). Obviously there is always the hubber cred from saving a few hundred grams with red though!
  9. That should be +- 8kg's, if it's 10kg's then there's a problem! Possibly a little steep, but not far off the mark if it's in good condition and the rest of the build is a similar level (i.e. wheels, bar, saddle etc)...
  10. Just look at the price of the carbon frames on e-bay for an idea of what you should be paying (and someone is still making a profit off those!)... Carbon is not that expensive, it's just still being marketed as a gimmick even after being around for years (all new 'technologies' are launched at ridiculous prices - look at plasma tv's when they first came out and 3D tv's now). And I really don't believe there is that much development and testing in the bikes - not in a beneficial way at least... Why are there Merida's and Silverback's racing alongside the Look, Time and Pinarello's? Giant also has always been up there, as far as I know they spend more time building bikes than designing them. And do you really think there is more development in a top-end racing bicycle than in a 1000cc super bike capable of 300+kph for the same price?
  11. Unfortunately so true... exactly why I try my best to only train with small groups of riders. Rode with a bunch recently who kept riding 3 abreast even when there were cars sitting behind them, was the most embarrassing thing I've done in ages!
  12. I also saw that recently, but haven't looked into it further, but would have to assume it is at least partially due to 'my' Edge brand... They are a fairly big brand in some regions and have displays at most of the major bicycle expo's so would be a serious conflict to have another brand running the same name. As I say, this is all speculation and I haven't actually spoken to my suppliers about it... These bikes are really awesome and I hope I will be in a position next year to start carrying proper stock of the frames as people are currently (understandably) cautious about spending this sort of money on a brand with unknown (me) backup service.
  13. The wheels are 1360g... I didn't weigh the frame unfortunately, but claimed weight is 1100g (uncut seatpost). White bar tape just doesn't last at all and didn't want to go too 'bling' on the white stuff, but might try it out next...
  14. And I'll sell them for R6,500... Think i smell another South African rip-off! I've got a good mark-up on these frames and you're telling me he has another 50% on my price??? Crazy... The RRP from the supplier of the frames works out at R6,634 incl. VAT, please don't go and pay R10k for them unless you really are desperate!
  15. To try and answer all the questions... Slogger: This is an actual brand and not something I did myself, I just got the unbranded frame as a sample. They will do personalised brands as well (like Airstreeem), but this is their actual brand. I am not sure if they own the mould/design for the frames or if they are standard frames, but haven't seen any similar designs from other brands (incl. Ebay unbranded frames). Not sure which saddle you're talking about, but did 3,5 hours on the road bike on saturday and the saddle was awesome (takes a little while to get used to, but once you've settled in, it's extremely comfortable - a friend who rides one says the exact same thing about his). Had to put my old I-beam post and saddle on to the MTB coz I needed a 400mm post so haven't used that saddle yet. Sharkie 2: No shops at this stage, I import them myself, but haven't taken the time to approach any shops yet, want to keep it all on a small scale for now so will only order frames if there is demand for them. Santa C: The frame in 17" weighs 1250g so probably about 1300 odd for the 19" (pure guess though). The wheels are 1670g Edge XC230's... Guess it's just a nice, balanced build. No ultra weight weenie stuff, but also no excess weight anywhere on it. Samma: If you are interested in any point, I can always check stock availability and see what I can do... Put some mileage on both bikes over the past few days and they are both absolutely awesome. The road bike handles much better in high speed corners than my Specialized did and climbs incredible well - presumably due to the low weight (my Spesh was a 2006 model so not comparing to current models). What can I say about the MTB, there's no better feeling than riding on the hills of table mountain on a sub-10kg bike and everything seems to just work perfectly together (the groupset is awesome although I run out of gears at about 50km/h, the fork is seriously smooth and the bike as a whole is such a big improvement over my old bike it's amazing)... If anyone is interested in anything on the bikes, send me a PM and I will see what I can do. Will take a while to get complete bikes in, but I guarantee you will not find a cheaper bike with these specs.
  16. It would be in the region of R11k, but I am not intending on bringing in any stock at this stage. If someone is interested, I can see what stock is available at my supplier and try to get a frame if it is possible. I do have this frame available (https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/74774-edge-revolution-21-isp-frameset-and-bb30-crank/page__p__1068997__hl__edge+revolution__fromsearch__1#entry1068997) which is not the same model as my bike, but looks awesome (IMO). Haven't had a chance to test ride the MTB, but the road bike is awesome!
  17. How about a set of these clinchers for R7k incl. double wheel bag, skewers, valve extenders and carbon specific brake pads (available in 38 or 50mm and Shimano or Campy immediately!). 38mm weigh 1520g and 50mm weigh 1590g a set! Recommended weight limit of 100kg's
  18. I have to admit I wasn't sold on the looks myself and still think they could have made it a lot better (especially with how awesome the XX groupset looks!), but it does seem to work well with this bike so very happy with it... My biggest problem is that they went overboard with the design on the shifters which should have been left as a simple design rather. They look fairly cheap the way they've been done. In the end it's all about functionality and can't comment on that yet, hoping to take it on it's maiden voyage tomorrow up table mountain. Today was the road bike's turn and it is absolutely beautiful (even though I'm really doubting my move from Campy to SRAM - Double-Tap is just over-complicating the whole shifting thing IMHO).
  19. There are 2 carbon clips built into the frame that the cable gets pressed into. They just have enough flex to press the cable in and pull out of, but takes a fair amount of force so not going to come loose while riding.
  20. Finally they are ready... the first complete bikes from the Edge components I'm importing (Figmo is the same company, just another brand name they use)... Firstly, the road bike, weighing in at 7.17kg's with pedals and Gatorskins (large frame):- Secondly, the MTB, weighing in at 9.45kg's with tubeless setup, but no pedals (large frame):-
  21. If I have my new bike up and running by this time next week, I will definitely come to try out the night riding thing!
  22. As you hint at, the local agent wasn't the best, but I actually dealt with Pinarello in Italy directly. They offered me a new frame for 600 Euro's (Pin. Paris) which I accepted, but when it came to paying for it straight after that, they ignored me for 2 months and then told me the person had left the company and they weren't willing to sell me a frame any longer so I must pay full retail locally instead (I had their offer in writing)... No regrets on Specialized at all, but never had any need to test their service. Judging by the reports, it's pretty good though! Other than that, plenty of remorse on smaller things (like the pair of Assos bib shorts I bought 2 weeks ago, wore once and really didn't fit me well at all).
  23. Why does it have to be about impressing other people? I ride nice bikes because I feel good riding them... Where is the line then? South African 'pro-riders' aren't as good as Schleck and Contador so should they also ride alu Raleighs rather than top of the line racing bikes or do they qualify for an entry level carbon Madone because they are better than your average fun rider who only qualifies for a Game special? Just remember, these companies and their top-end bikes wouldn't exist without the support of the funriders of the world who make up the majority of the market! Really, who cares what bike the guy passing you is on, it just means he's fitter than you! Does every Ferrari driver in the world spend their weekends in Italy doing testing for the Ferrari F1 team in your world? The new saying: It's not about the bike, it's about how much you enjoy riding it!
  24. Older model S-Works Tarmac:- https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/75592-specialized-s-works-tarmac-56cm/page__p__1076939__hl__specialized+tarmac__fromsearch__1#entry1076939 Have to ride the Edge stuff I am importing and can't justify having more than 1 road bike at this stage of my life!
