  1. 9kg is going to be expensive, sub 10kg can be done on a budget... The build you mentioned is probably the cheapest with modern parts, alternatively go older SID with v-brakes unless you're looking at new parts only? Biggest change will be lightweight tyres which make a huge difference...
  2. There weren't FSA agents in SA a few months ago, but not sure if that's changed since then... According to their website, the agents contact details are:- SOUTH AFRICA International Trade - grant@intltrade.co.za
  3. New/used? If used, what condition?
  4. The older elite cages had specific bottles for them (500ml or something) which cost an absolute fortune... I rode with them for about 8 years, they never broke, but I also had to use the same bottles until they basically had holes in them they were so old.
  5. How much do those wheels weigh? I am still trying to work out where the extra 1.6kg's is on my bike with a very similar build (except with GXP, 1360g alu wheelset, gatorskins and a slightly heavier frame by about 300g)... I also want a 5kg bike! Is that weight an actual reading on a scale or theoretical weight? Anyways, that is an awesome looking bike at an incredible weight!
  6. Definitely lay charges, it's a criminal offence to leave the scene of an accident irrespective of who's fault it was. Even if he gets off with just a warning, at least he will think twice the next time. If there's damage to your bike and you want to claim from insurance, they would insist on a case number as well.
  7. We pay the same import duties the suppliers pay... There are none on bicycle parts, you can't drop that! The opportunity is there for the local market, but they decided to take advantage of the monopoly that comes from exclusive agencies rather than sell at a fair price. It's not the shops that are ripping people off, they are making fair margins in most cases, their cost price is just ridiculously high. As a consumer, my money goes to the best businessman, who cares what country they sleep in! Why are JHB people buying from CWC? That's not local for them, they should support the shop closest to where they live on the "support local" logic irrespective of service or price.
  8. If you're staying in Kalk Bay then it is all good cycling from there! The loop out around Chapmans Peak is awesome - the only bad part is you will have to do Constantia Nek to make it a complete loop which isn't nice at all (far too narrow and no edge to ride on). Rather go to the top of Suikerbossie, turn around and head back the way you came or carry on through camps bay and sea point if you are fit enough, but will still have to turn and head back the way you came (but all very scenic along the coast).
  9. R350/h @ 8 hrs/day @ 22 days/month (most shops work on saturdays so actually more!) = R61,600 per month... not sure who works on your bike for you, but I'm keen to start tomorrow if you want to send them my way! IMO, R150/h is more reasonable considering I doubt many mechanics in SA earn more than R10k/month and most probably half of that. That's still more than 100% markup which is plenty. That leaves you at R450 for a major overhaul (and I assume they should be a bit quicker with all the right tools and experience than you are).
  10. very... it's 10.30 on a friday night and I'm on the hub, aren't you?
  11. Bored joke gets wrong response from late night hubbers so it's gone Why am I still on the hub now!?!?!
  12. All I am saying is how do you deal in used bikes if you don't know anything about them? The rest is all just fluff (and completely factual)
  13. Very random sort of rant:- This is a shop/dealer that has always fascinated me... http://capetown.gumtree.co.za/c-Stuff-for-Sale-sports-bicycles-fitness-CERVELO-T25L-TIME-TRIAL-RAOD-BIKE-W0QQAdIdZ255246588 Mainly because my stolen bike and at least 3 others have ended up with him back when his shop still ran from his garage so I've always watched his ads out of interest. I am sure the above is a complete coincidence so no accusations here (just to clarify)! How do you buy and sell bikes if you know so little about them that you are selling a Cervelo T25L TT bike?!?! They don't print the model on the frame just for the fun of it! How do you know how much to pay for them? How does the previous owner/seller not know what the bike he owned is, surely you walk in and say "hey, I have a p2-sl I'd like to sell..."? If you look at any higher end bikes advertised on gumtree by the shop (none right now to use as an example), you will see that they never have an original spec or matching parts on them. There will be a mix of components with low end wheels on a nice frame with a cheap fork with the wrong length steerer etc. Most of the time the stems are upside down and the handlebars at the wrong angle too... This is more of a story that I just felt the need of posting than anything else as it really bothers me, but next time you're in the market for a new bike coz your pride and joy has disappeared without your consent, it might be worth looking at their stock. I suppose the alternative view is that you advertise it as a T25L so that anyone who searches for a P2-SL in google won't find the ad (one of the stolen bikes found there was coincidentally advertised as a large when it was actually a medium or something along those lines). As a disclaimer, I am not accusing anyone of anything here, just expressing possible scenarios and things that I find unconventional to raise some awareness of what you could look out for. If your bike is ever stolen, look for bits and pieces, not the complete bike.
  14. That is definitely not R20k's worth of bike... If she happens to fit on a 54cm, I could probably get a brand new carbon ISP frame, SRAM Force (SRAM Red BB30 crank though), 1360g wheelset and alu finishing kit (post, stem and bars). Why not look at some of the smaller brands where you get higher spec groupset/wheels etc. for the same price (the frames are basically the same really, the price just changes when you stick a big brand name on it). For R20k you should get at least Ultegra/Force I reckon and some decent components. For R20k she could also look at the carbon Cannondale Six 5, but don't think that is really a major upgrade over the alu version and definitely not worth an extra +-R7k (IMHO).
  15. Awesome! Looks like it might even fold up for easy transport to races!
  16. Always the cheapest and pretty reliable (you will always get a tracking number with any parcel). The only problem is that they only offer insurance to a maximum value of R5k and I don't know whether I trust them enough to not insure something like a complete bike. Insurance is 2% of the value insured.
  17. The best rate I found for a complete bike is DCB Logistics, door to door was about R350 if I remember correctly (most courier companies are closer to R1k). Ask his LBS if they can pack it in a box for you, Cycle Lab was more than happy to help me out with packing it in one of the boxes from one of their new bikes.
  18. Wouldn't mind having one of those, but don't like the look of the stem (too flashy), the wheels just look boring and there's too much white! At least the horrible looking crankset serves a good practical purpose!
  19. Not sure whether there are any similarly powerful rear lights out there, but the Magicshine MJ-818 puts out a claimed 80 lumens for R480 (including 4 cell lithium ion battery pack which normally retails for R600 alone!)... There is no way someone can claim not to see you then, they are insanely bright. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/80654-magicshine-lights/ I know it's a bit of a opportunistic plug for them, but you're not going to get anywhere with blue flashing lights unfortunately so I reckon you need a good alternative!
  20. Ratings or comments are a good idea. It's up to the buyer to judge for their self, but it does give them some additional info from which to make the judgement (very little change from the current system)... On the verification thing, let's be honest, the hub is run by a 20-something guy sitting at home I assume, would you want to go to all that hassle? I know I would never do it... It's up to you to decide for yourself if someone is legitimate... I have probably sold hundreds of items on the hub and still have people concerned about their security when buying from me. I will try my best to provide details to prove I am legitimate, but they are always welcome to walk away if they aren't happy, I won't take it as an insult. This guy has brought a new level to the hub, with multiple profiles and a proper knowledge of the items he was selling, unfortunately people were caught out by his intelligence and well constructed scam, but now everyone is hopefully awake again and will be more wary. No matter what you do, someone will get through the systems and post fraudulent ads and you will just be more inclined to believe them as they have already "verified" themselves. The idea of a different classifieds layout will be much better for ease of use, but not necessarily for a buyer or sellers security. In the end, this is just another open forum, not a shop.
  21. How do you search for IP addresses? Everyone always says that is all you need, but I've never seen anyone actually track someone down with one...
  22. Just be careful posting those details publically for your friend's sake... those are confidential details and I am sure ABSA can check who searched for the account details today if they wanted to. I don't think even the police should be able to get the details of a bank's client without a warrant. I hope I am wrong, but your friend might be in a position to have legal charges laid against them for providing that info.
  23. What group are you in? I haven't checked my Garmin but know it was far too fast for me (E - F groups).
  24. Their last minute organising sucks, but it's nice to see something different on the calendar that all of us funriders can also participate in... An entry fee of R10 is also a breath of fresh air from Pedal Power (they would be able to justify R100 for it without any hesitation!). I can't make it today, but would love to be able to do some of these in the future whether it's for seeding or just for a laugh so go and support them so it happens more regularly! For those moaning about the day of the week and the seeding thing, your seeding isn't going to drop if you don't ride so stop stressing about it (it really doesn't affect you if 2 people from your group move up and you don't!). If it was on saturday, you would moan because it's the roller coaster on sunday so you can't ride so give it a break! Maybe 4 till 7 or even 8 would be better than 6, but I'm sure that will change if there is sufficient support for it... Give us a southern suburbs one and I will make sure I get there before 6 if that's what it takes!
