  3. I got 3:22 as well, but started in C, and managed to get through them all just before the climbs. Picked up a guy with a TUKS jacket and we worked all the way until the turnoff... Then his legs gave out and I was on my ace all the way home. Those last 10 kms hurt. But please with the time! Was a great race, despite all the rain and wind!
  4. I have the 35 as well... Picked it up second hand here in the hub. Had HRM issues, and Bruton were absolutely amazing in sorting me out with a new one at no cost, without asking for receipts or anything, and really accommodating. I had the cateye before, and the change has been awesome! I love the gps mapping, the battery life is amazing, and today discovered its suitability to use in the wet. I also use strava for viewing rides, so can't comment on the site much. But my riding partners all ride with garmins and the data is almost an exact match. If you can spend the extra for a 40 or 50, I'm sure you won't regret it... Keep a lookout for second hand units too!

  8. Must say, that rain and wind was a real bummer! But race went well, pushed a decent time which I'm happy with! Bmw1za,well done on the three second advantage! Haha that's what I get for freewheeling! But a load of fun nonetheless, good to see so many turn out! The Casino entrance was a shambles, organisers should maybe mention about the heavy parking fee beforehand...

  11. I ride with a standard 53/39. For me, the cassette is the one that matters. Rode a 12-23 by mistake after 11-28. Nearly died on my usual hills(I'm a fatty too) Switched back to 11-28 and am absolutely happy. Only climb out the saddle on 39-28 on gradients steeper than 10%. You can pretty much manage anything with the combo i have now.. If you can't - then you need to train more, not change the gearing.
  12. Why don't you also try some carbon assembly paste? It'll let you torque just a bit less, and still hold the rails nicely. I used it on my old seat post that never really gripped nicely. Worth a shot?

  15. Try the dark chocolate. It's like a completely different bar. I bought the yoghurt ones by mistake once, and was utterly disgusted. It seems like candy chocolate bars are not great. I don't know if they're too sweet? I normally love snickers, but riding, they disgust me... And the drink stuff is fine, I just think having solid food makes a big difference..
  16. I really like the jungle oats dark chocolate bars. They're easy to carry, you find them everywhere and they just seem the nicest to eat while riding. Tried other stuff, normal chocs suck. Apparently nougat is very good as well tho I haven't given it a try yet... I've always liked PVM energy vars and find they're great if I'm stopped and eating, but while moving, nothing beats the jungle bars. Also, boiled baby potatoes. Have a few in a zip lock bag with a smattering of salt... I swear after a few hours in the saddle those little yellow bastards are heaven! For racing I do gels like everyone else, but find solid food helps too, that's where the bars come in... Brilliant! And then I don't mess with my drinks bottle. Water only. Just don't like anything else in there, and refilling is nice and easy.

While I do not wish to argue with someone as knowledgeable as yourself, JB, I must say, I do rides well over 120kms at a time, and through this winter, I have ridden at least 120kms a week on those 16/20 wheels. They have only broken a spoke when I was forced onto a bad pothole. Most of my riding is not on fantastic roads, loads of speed bumps, corrugated tar, and those lovely little dips created with the lamp posts wiring crossing under the tar. They have stood up well! And the only problem I have is the spokes turning, but keeping tension and true. They do get bumped out of true every now and then. So its worked for my 100kgs so far. Although I must admit, I am looking for some higher count wheels just for the peace of mind..
  18. Ha I won't lie, not much beats the feeling of super smooth legs in bedsheets... I'll probably shave even if I'm not cycling... For now, I see it as a major perk!
  19. I'm over 100kg with kit. I ride shimano rs 20 wheels with a 16/20 spoke count. They do need to be tried when I hit some of the bumps on these crappy roads I train on during the week, but climbing and sprinting they feel fine. Have only broken a spoke after being forced into a pothole. The crap part of low count wheels is the rim then goes properly noodely and you crawl home. But you get home.
  20. May just be a paint crack. The paint tends to be put under stress right over those weld joints. I know the old looks with carbon tubes and alu lugs have the same issue. But get it checked at an lbs. They'll probably know best. Good luck!
  21. Well did the race today, must say was fairly well organised and a nice route. Was my very first race in all my life, and absolutely loved it. We drove to the end and cycled to the start, worked a charm! Big thanks to the organisers, enjoyed it!
  22. Go with a second hand hilux instead. Tbh I did the whole Chinese (and in this case,Indian) bakkie research. Let's just say it didn't pan out like the Chinese carbon thread here... Not great news. Not happy customers. Not good support. Horrible resale values and spares are apparently a nightmare. But take with a pinch of salt, I haven't owned one. Taken a number for test drives and was impressed. They're built to exist, not to perform. Good luck!
  23. Looking at that picture of him on the cervelo, it's amazing how much his physique has changed. From this relatively skinny thighs to the tree trunks he has now, the upper body that was once proportional.. Incredible the changes required to get in the right physical for.
  24. On my basic alu Scott, I went from 9 speed tiagra to 10 speed ultegra. Massive difference and the first I'd recommend. Then went with 58mm carbon wheels. Awesome difference. You can expect less power output needed to maintain higher speeds. With a lighter Wheelset, acceleration and climbing will improve, as well as your flat and straight speeds. 30mm isn't a massive deep section, but definitely is better than the 10mm standard wheels. I can't feel a difference on race tires except for weight. Wheels are one of your most effective upgrades. Good luck man!
