  1. Steve it rides both fast and comfy, well as fast as the old rider wants it to be
  2. No they are steel probably Ishitawa but no marking
  3. Lucky bugger have a blast Steve
  4. Brooks Cambium C17 Carved very comfy
  5. Haha I will leave a note for the owner😜
  6. Just finished a full restoration on this one, ended up with full paint and new decals because the frame was bad. Very interesting construction with the main tubes going into a mould and the alloy lugs mouded to the tubes creating one unit. Very stiff but not too light, but it was a touring bike in the day. Full Suntour groupset 2x10 sp with lovely power shifters mounted on the stem. Rides very nicely, comfortable bike.
  7. Thought this was ironic that almost 7 years after Ryan completed his build of the same Gemini, I had stripped off the yellow paint and redone the frame with decals this time. A good frame is always worth treasuring
  8. Will send you a PM with my details give me a call
  9. Cotic sizing is on the larger size so check first, I ride a 17" MTB normally which on a Simple or Solaris equates to a small
  10. Thats the way; dont overthink it, some of my best bikepacking was on a 1988 Schwinn High Sierra 26 MTB with bits and pieces made/scrounged from elsewhere. Just get out and ride
  11. Well done on securing the X, out of interest I built an Escapade and an X at the same time, albeit a Gen 1 Escapade. But I ended up selling the Escapade because the X rides better. Enjoy yours and see you on the trails and groads sometime
  12. Just make sure whether you need symetrical or assymetrical bolt pattern on that crank, there were two. Rapide can help with the latter but CSIXX for the former
  13. I had one off a tandem I raced a while back and it was quite a mission finding another. Linden Cycles hooked me up with the other but make sure you get the one with the hole that the cable goes through the wheel the newer one doesn't work
  14. Built a few over the years: Bridgestone MB3 with 700c Conversion Momsen STR 1x10 But my favorite is this one which I currently ride; its a bit like an old Landy Defender (without the oil leak) 1992 Trek 830 CroMo Frame found in a dumpster at local LBS Arbitrary steel fork from another bike shop Race Face Prodigy 34T XTR Brakes with Travel Agents to work with STI XTR Wheel set 105 9 sp STI LX RD Vredestein T/L Rapide Frontier 440 bars Rapide Saddle Genuine go anywhere ability and a great touring bike.
  15. Hey Ian I used to make the annual pilgrimage to the Trench in Luderitz for the speed trials, needle board and a 10m2 camber induced rig in search of the holy grail of 40kts! Never made it quite to 40 but had a lot of fun. Perhaps Emmerentia one afternoon if the wind is blowing we should dust of a few boards and sail, and then drink beer.....

I hear you Paddaman but there in lies the challenge with a fleet such as the Finns. Are you starting modern and classic on the same gun? Demoralising for the classic skipper on the first beat when regardless of his Dacron sail and aluminium mast condition he is blown into the weeds when the fist puff hits a Carbon reinforced 3DL on a Hit Mast and the modern boat points higher and goes faster. Unfortunately cheque-book racing! Rather a strict one-design with locally sourced chandlery that allows the skill of the skipper and crew to shine through; these skills being easily transferable should the opportunity arise for international competition on international classes. Not saying for those who want to throw pots of money on Devoti's and the like there should not be a class but not at the expense of those wanting to race on equal footing. And without being non-PC to any club out there still trying to survive; its the mistake many have made.

Lets face it Paddaman this is an age old gripe;why not develop the local classes; noooo. it never worked because clubs specifically punted a class or group of classes and frowned upon any O Class enterants rather than encouraging them to build numbers they encouraged them to buy a boat in one of the club classes. Bottom line is that sailing, and don't get me wrong I have been sailing and racing at various levels for the last 45 yrs, has reaped the "benefit" of yacht clubs stupidity over the years. The sport has been killed, instead of having a sport where the barrier to entry was only the cost of a locally produced competitive boat we now have a situation where to be competitive you have to shell out more than a small car for a dinghy! R250 000 may get you a second hand competitive Finn, similarily for a 505. Ridiculous when you think that at current production costs a Spearhead would probably cost no more than a middle of the range carbon bicycle!
  20. Interesting conversion Eppie, I did the same with my MB5 using road calipers, geometry is fine I don't know what all the fuss is about with people complaining about high BB etc. just started my second one which will accommodate the Clements I got
  21. That is very nice!
  22. Not too sure on year Steve. Back wheel had a slow puncture on the ride and pulled the valve stem but the are also a bit long
