Nice. I'm keen, having missed PBP last year. GuyP said he's keen. A few of the gang are also interested.

That's the way to go faster. Ride with people who are faster. Wheelsuck, whatever to stay in the buch. Next time you'll be quicker.

Agree. To do it in less than 7 hours, should aim to average 33-35 km/h. The speed and power of the team of the team is also a significant factor. Seven well-organized riders can keep going at relatively high speeds over long distances.

With a longish break at 100km it pushes the time up :-)

Not sure. Anyone answer this? I guess a sub 3hr 100km is a start. I'm using the monthly Jo'burg Audax 200km rides as a guide. Averaging 30km/h on these events, without any rests, should put us in the right ballpark.

Any Jo'burg based riders keen to form a sub 7 team?

  10. @Guy The winter riding sounds amazing! After reading this any thoughts about complaining about riding through our forthcoming winter seems churlish. Will send your regards to the gang.
  11. Thanks, Guys. @GuyP Missed you yesterday :-) Done any long rides that side?
  12. I bought a set of Fulcrum Racing 3s about four years ago. I had endless problems until Fulcrum kindly agreed to rebuild both wheels. Since then they have been reliable. I do notice that the aero spokes often turn in, necessitating regularly facing them in the right direction. I weigh 95kg. I recently bought a set of Easton EA90Aeros. They are incredibly stiff and I'm really happy with them. They are about 50mm in depth, and do not seem to be affected by wind. Definitely the best wheels I've owned. I have had Ksyriums on my training bike for three years They have been bullet-proof. Their handling does come close to the Easton's or Fulcum's.
  13. It is 5am and I'm in the dirtiest toilet in South Africa. My bowels have erupted and all I can do is wait it out. The toilet is located in Nigel, the first control, 60km into a 400km Audax ride. I hear my comrades calling for me. Feeling a surge of bravado, I tell them to go on and I'll catch them. Finally, the guns fall silent and I stumble out of the cubicle. Eddie smiles and says wryly that I'll be a lot lighter now. I speed off into the day. With 340km to go, and not relishing the prospect of riding on my own for a full day, I drop the hammer. Thirty minutes later, I see the group and bridge. I spend the next hour licking my wounds safely in the bunch. We hit Villiers at noon. 180km to go. The next stage is the classic stretch to Deneysville on the Vaal Dam. This stretch is 88km long and is going to be a tester. I wolf down a coke, a sandwich and some bananas. Twenty clicks later, and after using up way too many matches motor pacing a truck, my stomach goes offline. Godfrey reckons its from an insulin spike. I drop off the pace line. Godfrey rides me back on, but I'm belching and wretching. I tell the group I'll catch them and stop to take some Rehidrate. I then grind out another 10km on my own, before I see Nigel lying under a tree, at the side of the road, looking grim. I stop to see how he's doing. He's also got the dodgy tummy. We team up, both gradually feeling better as we ride the next 50km. We see the Vaal Dam as night is falling and our spirits lift. We catch the bunch at Deneysville, and hurriedly refuel. It is 6pm now. We have been on the go for 15 hours. The previous night I could only manage an hour of sleep before the early start. Still, we are only 110km from home. We cruise to Henley where I ingest as much caffeine as I can. This is a good strategy, as I put in long pulls at the front. At the Lido, the caffeine wears off and I am mashed. I just can't stay awake. I get dropped on Impala. I decide to sleep in the bushes. This is very uncomfortable, so after a few minutes I set off again. On Butcher's Hill, my phone rings. It's Gill. Where am I? The bunch is waiting for me at the top. I'm relieved. It is now 10pm, when a "good Samaritan" sees this cyclist talking on his phone at the side of the road, and decides to offer "help". I watch as he cuts across three lanes, narrowly avoiding at least three sure things. He then stops 50m in front of me, and puts it into reverse. I jump out of the way as he narrowly avoids ending my ride. He asks if I'm okay. I smile and wave, as he speeds off. I'm happy to see the bunch as we crawl to the finish. My Polar tells the following tale: 23 hours on the road, 16h25 riding time, 400.54km at 24.4km/h, 12198 kCal burned. Thanks to everone for a wonderful day. See you all next month.
  14. No worries. Catch you next time. Yeah, Mellville is the new Yeoville, and Greenside is the new Melville ;-)
  15. Yip. I have done many bad things, Father. No, seriously training for 400km Audax coming up :-)
  16. Today's attempt at 3 laps was aborted after 2 laps as a result of late start 'caused by gastro. TNT1 and Kosmonooit, did u ride? If u did, my apologies for missing our 7am start. Has anyone done 3 laps? If so, how long did it take you?
  17. As close to 7am as we can get through the gate?
  18. Sunday sees me doing 3 laps of the cyclist's playground. Sure most Hubbers at the fun ride champs, anyone else riding at SBR on Sunday?
  19. RIP When I was a kid growing up in the 80s had his poster up on my wall. Condolences to his family. He leaves a proud legacy!
  20. Hope he makes a speedy recovery, Jacques. You and your family are in our prayers.
  21. Got a set of MT 55's for my 26" hardtail 2 years ago. They have been bullet-proof. Highly recommended.

    Ride for Sight

Results just been taken down! Similar errors to last week at Emperors: duplications, long and short ride mixed. Only real difference this week was the turn around time was even longer. Anyone from Racetec care to comment?
