  1. Road the 60km suikerbosrand today on the marathon cadence. Good flavour (passion fruit). No spiking, bonking or cramps. Energy levels were good throughout the rides, especially those climbs. I'm impressed!
  2. Picked some up from Cycle Lab, Fourways today. Will try it out for a ride at suikerbosrand tmw.
  3. Amateur... no scorpion king.
  4. Had one of those (scorpion) 2 weeks ago on the spruit of all places. It was also at speed so I would have scored myself close to a 9.7.
  5. Trail bikes are generally better suited to more travel and 27.5. I would stay away from 26ers. They are becoming harder to find spares for. Marathon bikes, IMHO, are fine with 100mm travel, but definitely favour 29 and full-sus. Some hardcore guys prefer hard tails for marathons but that takes it out of you a little more, very bumpy and uncomfortable if you are in the saddle for 3 days. Those events you mention are definitely marathon events. I would go 29er full suspension. There are great bikes out there that cover this category. The "big name" bike that many favour is the Specialized Epic, which is a marathon thoroughbred. I am biased as I have one. As a good balance between trail and marathon, the Specialized Camber is awesome. Other great brands include the Momsen Vipa as a marathon/trail mix, Santa Cruz tall boy, and the Yeti ARc. These are all expensive bikes. Cannondale Scalpals are also highly recommended, but again, expensive. Slightly less expensive are the Giant Anthems and Merida Big Nines. I am sure that others have good recommendations as well, but those are the main ones that jump to mind for the cycling you are focusing on. You can test ride many of them. Take the opportunity to see which one in your budget you prefer. Last piece of advice... spend as much as you are comfortable with. Penny-wise, pound-foolish will only mean that you will want to upgrade to the better bike in +- 2 years time.
  6. Thanks Richard and team. Another great race and well organised. I felt those extra 2kms at the end. But happy with a 2h53 on such a tough 45kms course.
  7. I see from the website that there is registration possible on Sunday... great.
  8. Travelling back from Kgalagadi and will only arrive on Jhb at about 14h00. Anyway I can pick it up on race day? If not, what time does B batch start for the 45km? I have a permanent number board, so would just need race sticker.
  9. Didn't get the race pack. I have registered online though. And have a race board from previous races.
  10. Been out in the bush and out of comms. Didn't see a registration venue on the website. Presume we just arrive and ride?
  11. So impressed with this! Really upset that I'm going to miss the race, but will be doing the Berg & Bush that weekend. At least I can come home to it whenever I want. I just hope the trail stays save.
  12. Woohoo, feel like I won a prize. Great choice Alph. I still get excited just seeing my Epic standing and waiting for a ride. Every time I get on my bike I immediately know that I made the right choice. Pics please...
  13. love Yeti, but there is too much of that violent colour on that bike. it's making me slightly dizzy.
  14. my 2c... buy a bike that makes your heart race, whether it is the epic, scalpal, or vipa. don't just settle on something that is good enough for now, it's too much money in this category of bike if you are leaning towards the anthem just because it is the best value for money now, there will be a pang of regret every time your ride past (or rather get ridden past by) the bike you really lust after.
  15. I don't think your new gf will appreciate being referred to as a bike...
  16. My Elite (2014) didn't come with the full swat system. But you can buy it quite easily for 2k I think. I only bought the components I want. I don't use the box, so I just bought the frame tool (amazing), the bottle cages and the chain breaker (plus extra chain link) which is housed in the headset. So neat and convenient.
  17. ... double post
  18. What does that all mean?
  19. Take a look at the Epic Elite, just over 50k, but great ride. If it were me, it would be between that and the Vipa.
  20. Almost over a tortoise... van gaalens, down the church loop
  21. Pay a little more and get the 2014 XT version.
  22. Thanks flash, I have seen that thread before. Strange that I couldn't pick it up under the search function. Oh well, thanks anyway.
  23. No takers???
  24. Couldn't find any threads on this trail. Looking to get about 60kms in on Sunday, and thought I would try out VG for the first time (enjoyed Hakahana which I hear is similar). Are the routes well marked and easy to follow? Any recommendations for an intermediate-type route?
  25. To use your example, I went for the Epic over the Camber, with a similar focus to you. I wanted something more suited towards 50km+ with ability to handle intermediate terrain. My epic handles everything I through at it. I would also prefer the carbon frame with a view to upgrading components over time. Upgrading wheels here, tires there and bits and pieces in between keeps me loving my bike.
