  1. Just spoke to the guy about the motion sensor and he says it standard architecture. Also the wake on SMS is also built in. So one could source this locally for a lot cheaper.
  2. Agree but this will help recover those rides the garden manager decided to reposes. I'm interested in such a device for my commuter but I want to hook it up to a dynamo. I would love real time tracking so my wife can see online where I am while out commuting or doing a Sunday cruise. The motion sensor is a nice touch, going to mention the idea to a guy who is playing around with real time tracking units.
  3. Thats awesome. The trails start and finish at Ongegund and my son goes horse riding every Monday next door. But guys, be careful as there has been farm attacks the last few weeks in that area during the day. Its a real bummer though. http://www.pedalpower.org.za/blog/news/new-schapenberg-mtb-trails-open-in-april/
  4. I really like its application but my only concern is what is the operating life of this device when its in full swing. Just using my B2100 on EDGE reduces the battery life to only a few hours.
  5. I got something left on my wish list that is in stock from 18/04/2011 (R335 ex)
  6. And we just got back yesterday from our little break where I was claiming poverty the whole time: Sorry honey, we cannot eat as I'm broke !
  7. That is right, I hate you CRC, I HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Went online last night to order some brake pads for my Vees and ended up slapping my credit card till it said no more. I so hate you for it!!!
  8. The problem I see is that too many mechanics and bike-gurus still live in the past and compare the the 7-spd vs 9-spd world. There is just too much "reasoning" and common logic floating around, and that is in no way a good thing.
  9. I would ask the mechanic to sell a better quality (and not always more expensive) chain if those are the km's you can expect.
  10. Yes and the irony is that the chains are thinner where it really dose not make difference to chain wear, its only weaker with sideways movement and that is only a problem when somebody is not shifting correctly. I'm on 8spd and my original OEM cassette was junk, lasted only 2000km of mostly tar. Replaced it with a better quality 8spd cassette (HG-80?) and its now 4000km of tar & dust with at least another 10'000km to go. Quality of the product used and its maintenance is still the deciding factor.
  11. We are discussing the law and its outcome when deaths happen, not motorist attitude towards cyclists. The internet is full of cases where UK & US cyclists have been mowed down by motorists and the killers just walk away.
  12. ** Edited the original post as refered by you as the 1/2 symbols where corrupted. Thank goodness I keep an online copy of the muti mix: ½ cup maltodextrin 6 ½ tsp fructose ¼-½ tsp table salt Combine in one liter of water, shake, and serve! BTW, 1 cup is 48 tsp (teaspoons) so the above ratio is (maltodextrin:fructose:salt) 48:13:1 That makes it now easier for us to understand. So here we are using 3,69 to 1 ratio and not 2:1 EDIT: The water ratio to the 48:13:1 is 202 ~ (water:maltodextrin:fructose:salt) 202:48:13:1
  13. Sorry but I will call you cynical. My sister in laws daughter was killed by a drunk driver, she was the passenger. Another passenger also died. This was the second time this driver killed (3 deaths to his name) - he is white and his victims have all been white. First offense he got a warning. This latest offense, he got 2yrs worth of community service. The case was also nearly thrown out of court but my sister in law who is a retired cop used all her knowledge and contacts to keep the case alive.
  14. Then have even less faith in the UK & USA judicial system if your a cyclist. In both these countries cyclists are just considered cannon fodder for motorists and they get away with it with even a lighter slap on the wrist than our courts dish out. Its sadly a global problem.
  15. I think the reasoning is that the chains are thinner and the cassettes are also thinner.
  16. I'm looking at either doing it solo or in a small group but with no backup. I think 80km is doable on the route without draining oneself. Biggest challenge is when as to avoid the heat (it was 31 in Robertson today) and the rain.
  17. Don't get stuck with the specifics. Just remember your working with volume and not weight. The one cup is a cooking measurement. I got a cheap set of measuring cups & spoons from clicks and works 100%. Not so sure. I've been using the AJ muti mix (Professor Asker Jeukendrup mix) and even also converted another sports nut that swears by it. Also check out Asker Jeukendrup on the web (I follow his tweets) as he gives a lot of hands on experience. Just keep in mind the many pricey products use AJ muti as its base and then bloat it with marketing hype.
  18. You can get yourself some clipless pedals and shoes next as you can migrate it to your new ride in the future. A nice cheap set of clipless pedals will cost you about R250 and shoes can be anything from R500-R2500. I got these pedals from Chain Reaction Cycles: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=54823 Cost me less than R300 with import duties and delivery. Else Shimano pedals from Chris W are also really great: http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-pdm-520-pedals
  19. Road mostly but would like to throw in some gravel and dust for the adventure. Saw a couple coming up Vyeboom and wanted to stop and chat but no place to pull over. They looked like foreigners as they exercised the touring etiquette of draping the host countries flag on their rear panniers. Also read a blog about an American group that did Route 62 a few years back. Might even just copy their route.
  20. Came back from KKNK today via Route 62 and I am so doing a cycle tour on that route. Have not really decided on logistics or start - finish but its something I have to do. Anybody done it and got some advice?
  21. Nothing wrong with that. I ride a GIANT ROCK and its GIANT equivalent to this. Don't be put off its V-Brakes as they are cheaper to run than disc and more reliable than cheap disc brakes. Just check that your wheels are true, spin them and watch the gap between the v-brake pad and the rim. You should not see any variance in distance. If you do, then take them to your local bike shop (LBS) and have it trued, it should not cost you more than R200 for both wheels. Your bike will be 100% perfect then. It looks like the bike was ridden around the block and then stored till you purchased it. Just learn how to clean, lube and maintain your bike (ask away on the hub when in doubt) and your bike will give you many thousands of kms of pure pleasure. Enjoy
  22. Looks like easter week is going to be AWESOME here in the Cape Anybody up for a Hub easter ride?
  23. Good point but considering that a bike does not last the length of the bond but I would say 4yrs max for most guys. So your insurance would be R4800 vs paying off roughly R8K of that R20K through your bond. That now gave me a brain fart, should we now approach the purchase of our bikes with the thought of adding in our insurance. So your new R20K bike that will last 4yrs is actually costing your R25K and should it be removed from your possession during this time, you will have it replace with a new R20K bike and allowing you to reset the purchase cycle.
  24. Thanks for the advice. My insurance starts in May for my bike (still need to finalize it). Must say it was great to work through a broker, my wife (who pays the insurance) is now getting her business, the car, the bike and the household insured for less than what her existing business and car insurance costs. And the broker pointed out that she was under-insured for her business, it was cover we "thought" we had but did not.
  25. My blacklist is: - Helderberg Cycle World - rotten service and I've had a couple of PMs with other Hubbers who agree 100% My greylist and I'm going to upset some Hubbers: - Williams, yes thats right. I really like Keith and co but their telephone is incapable of making outgoing calls. I've yet to receive my call on the various chains I've inquired about. Goods that I want to buy but they did not have in stock. They take down my number in their big counter diary and thats it.
