  1. This is something I constantly look into. That R200 Makro helmet will most likely not give you the same protection as your 172g one, but my Bell which is double the price of the Makro will most likely offer the same protection as yours. There is a big difference in absorption properties between the different cores helmets use. A budget (Makro/Game) store helmet is less likely to use a better core than a branded product. But this is an assumption as I've seen some budget helmets which are rather good. The other thing about helmets in accidents is they reduce the chance, not eliminate, serious brain injuries. More research is available on Motorcycles than bicycles, but in the States where there is a big movement for and against helmets (less than half the states allow you to ride without one nowdays), they find that deaths did not decrease or increases when riders wear or do not wear helmets, its just the number of permanent brain injuries differs. Its not an issue of its better than nothing, its a guaranteed chance of reducing the possibility of brain injuries. Then again 4yrs of my childhood was spent sharing a house with a seriously brain damaged child, and I guess that has influenced my bias towards protecting my noggin.
  2. David, how did you snap your frame? Then again you do get more miles out a frame than the rest of us combined.
  3. Any Python developers in the Cape looking for permanent work? An agency I know is urgently trying to fill posts they have on their books and it seems there are no unemployed Python guys right now. She just phoned me (again) trying to get some names of developers - I thought I knew a couple of unemployed ones but they all seem to be working again They can contact: Tamsyn Griffin COMMUNICATE PERSONNEL CAPE TOWN Tel: 021 418 1750 Fax: 086 609 4985 Cell: 072 132 5201 E-mail: tgriffin@communicate.co.za www.communicate.co.za She also does other IT placements and she is very professional.
  4. Glad to hear your all right.
  5. Whenever I hear something is at GHC, I give it a skip because of the parking.
  6. You probably clicked on "Watch Topic"
  7. Adendorff are the shiz, they are nationwide and are the cheapest. Too scared to go to their store with my credit card, very too scared
  8. Not my place to mention names, but if your in Somerset West and have been supporting the local guys you will know who (where) the two Giant Stockists. Too their suprise they found out a few weeks ago they are no longer stockists and its now been awarded to a single LBS that never use to stock them. The one LBS has now moved his Somerset West shop to another town near Oak Valley and is a big loss to our local LBS scene. Their be Dragons.
  9. Well the Candy X only cost R250 with duties and postage from CRC, so no real loss for me to go full eggbeater or Look. The only reason why I got these was I though my right pedal was broken, it turned out to be a loss crank arm but I had already ordered the Candy X. But I already found a good home for my old Shimano SPDs, but feel better now knowing that I'm giving them away for free after having ridden my CBs
  10. So today I did my virgin ride on my new Crank Brother Smarty X pedals, I'm 100% converted. Wow, what a difference compared to my Shimano SPDs. Both are the clipless platform types but in no way the same league. The CBs are just so much slicker with the mount and dismount. Originally I was not convinced that I would stay clipped in but zero problems on my commute this morning. And its a commute with some steep gradients. Clipping out was so smooth I never heard or felt it. This is great as I'm still nursing a sprained ankle and I need to make sure its not clipped in on the uphills. Heck, my ankle is so sensitive to sideways movement at the moment that I even need to be careful when off the bike, but the CBs put zero strain on them. I'm 100% converted to CB and love the Cool Aid
  11. There it goes again, SharePoint - hell, I think I need to get into that field. Tired of damn PHP and Symfony Framework
  12. Don't give the man ideas, he will do it
  13. Probably to get those burger you Jozie Hubbers where raving about
  14. I don't believe a single member of the Mod squad will sensor the truth
  15. Doubt it, ever notice nobody has ever posted a stolen helmet !
  16. Its legal if he was told ex-VAT at the time of the quote. Also a written quote must state ex-VAT and have a valid VAT number on the quote if VAT is still to be charged. Its a practice I hate and I say "Name & Shame" EDIT: I also checked the Act and it states that an ex-VAT amount may not have more impact on the quote as a VAT inclusive amount. I also use to work for someone that was not the most ethical person I know and he was very clued up on what was possible.
  17. Its somewhere on The Hub, use the power of Google "0860 111 502 or email Ben Blignaut @ blignab@sapo.co.za "
  18. Actually I've been surprised at how affordable Park Tool is in South Africa. I bought a PRO cassette remover only to see later that at the same LBS I could have gone Park Tool for R20 more. But not all your tools need to be branded, its just bragging rights if they are Park Tool blue
  19. 1. Your part is more likely to die of wear and tear before being a factory fault. So who cares, fix it yourself. 2. Its called doing business the South African way, it will never change but new laws are on their way to make it easier for us to get back at the shops. 3. Nothing else to say as its 100% true 4. The Hub for one, Bike Tutor for videos, books like Bike Repair for Dummies (actually a really good book), Park Tool Blue Book (next on my list) and a course with Yellow Saddle. I service my own bike and the secret is to ask questions on the Hub, check the videos at Bike Tutor and buy your tools only when you need them. Its not just about the cash you save, but you get to understand your bike better. You will know when its not shifting properly, or your brakes need adjustment, etc Also remember that prevention is the cure so also wash & lube your bike properly.
  20. Well last time my order got to Jozie, it took 1 day to get to Cape Town and 3 more to get to my SAPO, so early next week
  21. He probably got attacked by Killer Mushrooms at his work The latest update is: 03-03-2011 15:14 Delivery Agent - JOHANNESBURG - PTT Forwarded to delivery depot 03-03-2011 11:24 JO'BURG INT MAIL CENTRE EMS Received in destination count
  22. I like the idea of the showroom, look and touch but order via PC for instant service. Funny that I started suggested on a similar system (self help terminals with prices and stock indication in the show room) for when I was working the largest Mattress retailer in SA in 2002, but the idea was turned down by not only them but also the competition who I ended up working for. Hey,
  23. I always wondered how they built their wheels. Was afraid it was all hand as I don't think their are enough quality wheel builders in the world just for CRC alone.
  24. What country you live in ? Its law in South Africa, just its seldom enforced!
  25. Actually its not illegal if they revealed their source and they stopped sending you any futher communication after your query. Its a loop hole in the law concerning SPAM that gets abused. Still sucks and I refuse to support companies that do this.
