  1. UNBELIEVABLE. My wait was a damp squid. 1 day later AND a little freebie thrown in for good measure. Thanx Hanno "Service Excellence" Lategan for the fantastic online support and speedy delivery.
  2. Placed my order. Now the wait. Sigh.
  3. See you are in the Western Cape. But ... that could be anywhere. The Vivo shop / Native Sport outlet is in the Diepriver Business Park. You can always pop in there yourself and fit them first hand. Try this contact number and chat to them - 0828513065 or mail Stuart at stuart@vivobarefoot.co.za
  4. Skylark, you can't go wrong with "1 size up". Even if it is not 100% perfect, it should at worse be serviceable and you can always reconsider before ordering again. Maybe buy one of the specials and take it from there.
  5. I normally wear a 11 UK, but in Vivo, I absolutely love the BIG toe area and comfortably buy their 47EU (which I think is a 13UK?). If I take the 46EU, I find the length of the shoe too short. Agree with dee_biker, I too like the finger space in front of my toes especially for running. Vivo shoes generally snug around the heel area and are made to allow for forefoot space. This is my option and I have like ... 10 pairs? Running, hiking, semi-formal. Only shoes I wear nowadays.
  6. Do you guys know about the Vivo store in the Business Park in Diepriver? Picked up plenty specials there on there end of runs. And Stuart is a nice guy to deal with, including very knowledgeable as you would expect. He's a hardcore trail runner himself.
  7. One of the tests they made us do at a barefoot workshop was to do a barefoot squat and when in the crunch position, your heels (and toes) had to be flat on the ground. This indicate a normal Achilles as compared to shortened where you forced to raise your heels in a squat. Wearing heeled shoes for many years shorten the Achilles resulting in the above and stretching is required to lengthen it again.
  8. Oh forgot to add that with Vivo, the greatest thing is the end of frequent shoe replacements when heels strike areas are run down and "mid-soles" collapse. Forefoot running is also the most sensible way to run trails. Running on your forefoot just give you so much more stability when you need it most, on uneven surfaces.
  9. Running shoe advice is probably one of those subjects where one has to take all comments with a pinch of salt. We are all different and what suits one could be disastrous for another. When the OP asked what is the difference between "minimalist and normal running" I immediately wanted to chip in and say stay clear of barefoot running shoes until you know what its all about. But ... having said that if you starting it's probably the bast place to start if you become familiar with the basic requirements. My running story is also a long one, so won't bore you with the details, but as a heavy pronator, I also ran in heavy plodders for years and picked up my unfair share of injuries. Went to a barefoot workshop once and it all made sense. Today I only run in Vivo barefoot shoes. Have changed all my shoes to flat NO HEEL RAISE footwear (even my hiking boots) to make sure I stretch my Achilles and prevent shortening problems. In my transition to Vivo, my calves were way to lazy and weak, so had to take it very easy and start slow with short runs only. Today I am really enjoying my running, consciously working on my form. In a nutshell it boils down to - Run upright (don't chase your head) Leg circles behind not in front Strike beneath your body not in front Run a high cadence - 170 to 190s/m (I just about manage 17) Long story short - Listen to advice, do your research and make a decision. AND START SLOW.
  10. Interesting. Have not experienced cramping on my Banting lifestyle. Cramped once at the beginning when mileage was still low. Attended a Prof Nokes talk on the fallacy of the billion $$ energy drink industry and at Q&A time got in a question related to what causes cramps and does energy drinks not assist to prevent this. His short answer was "get the muscles conditioned to the longer sessions". One of the reasons I have been drinking plenty water only on rides and so far so good. Have found no ill effects of not having coloured water in my bottle.
  11. Oh yes, I carry some dates with me. Drink nothing other than water more as I have not found anything suitable yet.
  12. Thanx for the feedback. Will try the droe wors. Might be easier that the biltong I'm eating at the moment. Find biltong ok but a bit mission to swallow. BUT ... must admit I have not run out of energy on the 140>150k drags we've done. I do ride with some nut snacks. Thanx Was planning, if no other info come to hand, having my nuts/DF Yogurd/D Cream and berries I normally have for breakfast at the half stop too. Find that breakfast don't sit too difficult and normally ride immediately after without any bloated feeling. So thanx again. Feeling better every week and looking forward to the DC.
  13. Oh oh. Don't start the USN thread again. There has been some lank comments on that subject and most not too complimentary.
  14. Been hiking since way back in 1985. At first was paranoid about walking into one of these things. Contemplated buying and carrying anti-venom kits and the like and then decided to read some good books on the subject to make a decision. All the literature indicated snakes will more than likely avoid you and when you do happen to see one, you have already passed by a few hundred without knowing. Anyway, all anti-venom only last a short while and if applied in ignorance, you more likely to kill the patient than the actual venom. Needless to say have kept on hiking with no anti-venom. Seen a handful of snakes (most in the Puff Adder family as they so slow and love laying in the sun) in all that time and never once had any serious encounters. Lucky? Don't think so. Dangerous encounters are extremely rare. On my bike road past a thick black snake on Ocean View Drive and recognised it as a harmless Mole Snake. Then went past another I did not recognise in Richwood. Look, admire and be on your way.
  15. Heheheee. So glad someone else watched the bloomin thing. Like a suspense movie, I had to see the ending.
  16. Ah what the hell, here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXuc9dTH9qE
  17. Don't have the time now to check the thread and post the URL, but suggest you search You-Tube. Have seen some very interesting articles regarding just this sort of problem and as in the movies, it always work in the end. Suggest you check it out.
  18. Nice pics too.
  19. Wow. Sounds like an absolutely exhilarating experience. Been to Lesotho 3 times but was before I bought my MTB. Was more of a road runner in those days and the locals looked at me real funny running through villages in the early morning on those cold frisky mornings. Beautiful country with beautiful people.
  20. Been reading this thread and found the content most interesting. Been doing LCHF for a year now and feel great about my weight loss and general health improvement. 19.5k's off and dropping. Looking for some info on endurance nutrition. I have committed to doing the 2015 DC and been training for longer rides a while now. I've found my energy levels on most rides up to 100k great with little to no eating on route except for a good breakfast before taking off. Have a concern about bonking when going further and longer. What advice have you guys got for stuff you can either carry with (light) and/or purchase en route. Appreciate getting same advice from the wealth of experience around here.
  21. Easy man. You live by your choices. Decide what is more important for you. o sell the item even at the lower price or to tell the purchaser to get lost. You chose.
  22. "HBO" ... " If you can't change something, then change the way you feel about it" Like this quote. "Red Zone" ... After experiencing the Two Oceans Ultra last year I am not unhappy with ditching the Argus. Not done the CTCT since the route was shorter (and I'm not referring to last year). Changed to running many years ago and done the 2Oceans 4 times. Found that event a hellava lot more challenging, but greatly satisfying. Not an event for the chanster, especially if you targeting sub 6. So, ... will probably not join PPA and hope for the best. If I get in, great. If I don't, substitute?
  23. "Patchelicious" Cyclist shooting each other about not holding lines is far more likely than somebody shooting a bikejacker. Thought did not even cross my mind, but ... with so much road rage, God forbid we now get people agro enough to shoot fellow cyclists who did something stupid (like what happens in races all the time). Lordy lord, this frightens me more. No motorist take to the road armed thinking his shooting the next guy that cuts him off, and then ... he gets cut off and ... boom.
  24. Must admit most people make lots of sense and some ... are sprouting advice not suitable to most lay people. We all live by the choices we make. Will not tell anyone what they should do. Have not been in the situation myself (Thank God). Most cyclists are weight weenies and here we talking of carrying Glocks, Batons, Knuckle thingies, etc. How Many Grams? Be safe everyone. Be alert, Be expectant and Ride Fast.
